Stems on Rose Seem to be Dying

Hi,

I have a teacup rose plant that my husband bought me for Valentines day several years ago. It's been fine until recently. Some of the stems look like they're dying...they have a blackish purple color on them...and little black, oval shaped objects that seem like shells - they're hollow and fall off when scraped a bit...One of the stems is completely black at the bottom and there is green growth above it...that is wilting...one of the stems is half-black - going vertically - and the green side still has growth...there are other stems that are completely green, but they are all connected to one root area...and if it's a serious disease, I'm afraid I can't cut out the "bad parts." I've read about Canker, but I honestly don't know if it's that or not. I have pictures, but I can't post them here, so I'm not sure how to "show" anyone what it looks like. Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want it to die...but if it's going to, then I want to know. :-(

Thanks!
