New to Roses

OregonShrub

My mother had large roses when I grew up, as I recall, but I didn't pay much attention to them aside from their great smell every summer. Now I'm starting small with three miniatures I picked up from a nursery today. There is a deep red, a dark pink, and a bright yellow/orange. Their pallet was marked, "sorry, no name, but only 88 cents."

'At that price, why not give it a try?' I thought.

So these are my specific questions:

1) What kind of fertilizer to use, and are their simple home remedy fertilizers like tea bags that are good? Should I fertilize now, after repotting, or how often?

2) The three roses are currently in those really thin terra cotta colored plastic seeding pots that come from nurseries. I've arranged them in a basket sitting on a child sized chair by my front door for now. What size of pot should a 4-5" rose be planted in?

3) It's a scorcher out there right now. It's high summer in Oregon and I'm wondering just how much sun these roses are going to want. They were sitting on a table in full sun at the nursery.

4) How much water, should I water from the top or bottom, and how often?

5) Any special babying techniques that could help a newbie?
