Roses are not meant to be houseplants. So leaving them outside was the right thing to do. I don't know what kind of winters you have, but what you want your roses to do is to go into dormancy when it turns cold. That means you cut back on the watering and no fertilizer. You want them to drop their leaves and stay cold enough that the leaves don't grow back until next spring. If they are truly dormant, very little light will be necessary over winter. Dormancy of course isn't dead, so some water will be necessary depending on where you put them and how fast the soil drys out. Here in my area where temperatures seldom dip into the single digits I can cluster my pot roses against an outside South/West facing wall and the reflected heat keeps them warm enough over winter. It really depends on what type of winters you all have as to what else you may need to do.
