Is it just me, or are miniature rose varieties disappearing?

Rose addict that I am, I'm already planning for 2010 and have discovered that miniature rose vendors have either disappeared from the retail market (Nor'East) or are offering more limited in the past (e.g., Heirloom a.k.a. John's Miniature roses). For instance, "Incognito," a particular favorite of mine is no longer available from any source. Likewise Hot Tamale, although I've sourced that rose from another vendor?

Is it just me, or are the miniature roses drying up? Is there anything to be done?

The Mini market is a lil over 80 years old they didn't get to be this old with out learning anything. Welcome to hard to finds and rare minis 101 Where do you think they got this idea from? ( yep them rare and hard to finds big brothers)
Minis arent going anywhere any time soon but you may have to make some compromises in the immediate future . A good idea for you is to properagte your favorites every third year or so after the 10 year patten rights are expired.

Heres one link that will lead you to many rose sellers that also offer minis you'll have to sort em out. Happy hunting

Try Almost Heaven Antique Roses in North Carolina and Two Sisters Roses in Oklahoma. They both had Incognito this spring and probably still do.

There was supposed to be a few vendors who were going to sell roses that Nor'East/Greenheart are still growing. I hope we find out who they are soon.

Patents are 20 years.

Rosemania has the Nor East roses

Check out Hartwood Roses. The owner Connie, picked up every Ralph Moore mini that Nor'east was offering and I believe she will be offering some of them next year. The ones she has a mother plant of are listed on her website under the 'display garden' link. So this will be another nursery to look for minis.

I have a couple hundred well closer to 150 left of my order of 210 Ralph Moore roses. Need some work done on my mister / reclaimed water. They are tricky in Fl. I will have many varieties in the Spring, about 3 of each variety. I hope that is not violation... as I am not selling ye,t my apologies if that is the case.feel free to email me @ gmail

I counted today, 183 left of the 210 Ralph Moores lived. Most of them, I have between 3 or 4 of at the moment. Not too bad from one of each. I am trying to save 3 of each to become "mother" plants.( Not too bad, since I got them in July.) They seem nearly impossible to find in my area of Florida.

Thanks for the heads up rosenpots, Hartwood has a few roses I would like to pick up... if I can find the room. Dan, I see very few of the Ralph Moore minis on Rosemania, I may be missing something though.

For the most part, Rosemania is selling the Ralph Moore roses in bulk to rose societies for their spring fund raisers. They are not selling them one at a time by name. Sorry to have to tell you.

Burlington Rose Nursery is the place I would check.

I agree about Burling, rare I read so many good things on one vendor. Shame the old Ca to Fl bs is still around, or I would buy at least one of everything she had that I do not have, just to better serve Florida. I would (WOULD) buy from her first above all others (pretty much) but that is just my opinion!

Can anyone get rid of the above troll?

Fares things he is cool but no one else does.

I found a place in Denver selling Nor'East minis, and she ships Priority. You have to mail in a check like the old days, no online ordering. She was pleasant on the telephone.

I ordered six fragrant ones, should arrive today or tomorrow.

Here is a link that might be useful: Gwen's Mini Roses

Thanks for the link. I had not heard of this nursery. It is good to know another source to buy minis from.

Hi, rosesnpots. Just wanted to add that the order arrived in excellent condition, 3 1/2 X 3 1/2 X 5" pots, plus a free bonus Persian Princess that she told me is fragrant, too.

If you ask, she may have some other Nor'East minis that aren't listed on her website.

RE: Is it just me, or are miniature rose varieties disappearing?

You might include Ebay and Amazon in your search. I was able to find a couple of minis this way when other vendors did not carry the particular plants I wanted or had run out. Also, a valuable tip from another member led me to contact Almost Heaven Roses directly and find mini-floras for sale that were not listed on the website (due to small numbers). Good luck.

RE: Is it just me, or are miniature rose varieties disappearing?

I have a couple of feelers out, but still no Incognito. I do appreciate all of the recomendations.

I'd expect it to be hard to find something obscure like Erskine's Praire Peace hybrid spinosissima (my private holy grail for rose hunting). However, Incognito is one of the top 20 miniature rose "Favorites" on HelpMeFind and, at least according to RoseShow.Com, the #8 exhibition mini in 2008, and #12 on the list of "Miniature Queens" for 2004-2008. If vendors aren't carrying a rose with this kind of popularity, I can only imagine what other varieties are being dropped from commerce.

Thanks, one and all.

Well, it's a year later, and still no Incognito. I'm checking with some vendors to see if they'll carry it for 2011, but no luck so far.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions to date.

Did you try Two Sisters in Oklahoma? The Combined Rose List continues to show that they carry it.

 o
RE: Is it just me, or are miniature rose varieties disappearing?

I'd been searching high & low for Incognito as well for the past 10 months. Two sisters has been sold out of it for that long as well, but Heirloom has it.

www.heirloomroses.com

I'm not making a recommendation for or against this particular nursery--I can't yet, because I have no experience with them. However, I can tell you that it is the only place I was able to find Incognito.

Thanks for suggesting Heirloom. They do have listed for Incognito for the spring -- so that was extremely good news. I've put in my order (fingers crossed!)

Next on the hit list: Hot Tamale.
