Question on mimi's in pots

I have a mini rose bush that my mother-in-law gave me. I think she got it at a supermarket. There were four little plants in the pot, but they started losing their leaves almost before I got it home. I transplanted them into larger containers. Only one of them survived. This was in May. Now it is Nov.

During the summer I noticed the rose looked like the pot was holding way too much water. I took it back out of the pot and put new potting soil in the pot (miracle grow potting mix) and it looked nice and happy.

Now, I notice that the pot is seeming to hold water again. How often does one need to change the soil... Or do you have to. The pot I am using is a half a wooden oak barrel. But I wouldn't think one should have to keep transplanting so often.

Also, can someone explain if I need to cut the roots back the next time that I transplant him. And if I do need to cut the roots, how one is supposed to do it.

Thanks for your help
Sharon
