I am thinking about getting a PH test meter for use with my container-grown minis. Any opinions on good brands-models-sources? I've seen VERY wide prices ranging from $22 to $122. THANKS!

I have a Kelway ph meter. It is the best. It's more of a professional model. I've had mine for years and have done many ph tests with it. With this one just stick it into the ground, wait a minute and then look at your reading. Then clean it off and it's ready to use again.

OK - Santa Claus brought me that top unit Kelway HB2 (I was a very good boy all year :) ) Two questions: 1-what is ideal ph & moisture reading for minis? 2- what is best way to adjust if actual ph is high/low ?

Ph for roses is about 6.5-6.7. I don't use mine for moisture. But I don't grow mine in pots. I'm glad you got one. Mine has been used a lot over the years. I'm the President of the Stephen Decatur Rose Society in Decatur Il. I tested everybody's soil in our Club! |

Thanks Dan. My pots are presently in the garage waiting for spring but some growth is showing so things look good. I'll test ph when I move them outside later. Depending on reading I may be back to you for advice on correction techniques. BTW - flying to MDW tomorrow for meeting in Downers Grove. I really like Chicago and surrounding area - you live in a nice part of USA!

I just used my new ph meter for 1st time and got ph reading of 6.2 Should I raise the ph and what should I add to the container soil to help? Thanks!

A pH of 6.2 is just fine for roses. If it gets much lower, say 5.9 or so, then add a little lime to the soil to help raise the pH back up. Lime is slow acting, so don't expect to see the reading jump back up in a couple of weeks. However, it will do its work and eventually get the reading back up. Some say 6.0 - 6.5 is the best range, others say 6.2 - 6.7. Either way, your current 6.2 is fine.
