'Historic' Rose?

My wife and I own a historic home (ca. 1830) in Orange, VA. In the back yard we have a rose bush that is about 4 feet tall. I have been told by the previous owners that the rose bush is "historic," meaning that it has been there for quite a long time. I know nothing about roses (and only a little about flower gardening in general), and would like some help identifying this rose to determine 1> the age of the plant, and 2> the plant's classification. We have plans to start landscaping our back yard, but I want to make sure that, if this rose has, indeed, been here for a long time time, or if it is a unique variety of rose, we do not do anything to harm it.

Can anyone help?
