By your description, I wonder if it is Jeanne La Joie. It sounds like it's a pretty big rose, no?

That roses description says that the bloom is huge. This one is only 1 and 1/2 inches across. It must be very common around here because I see them climbing all over the place. I had thought about rooting a few of them but they all seem to have powdery mildew of some kind of fungus.

JlJ is a mini, and it's blooms aren't more than 1.5 - 2 inches across in a good year. But I wonder if that's it. Tell us about the form of the bloom it is like a Hybrid Tea or is it more like an antique or Austin form?

If you were in my part of the world, I'd suggest that the rose would be Dorothy Perkins, because it's our most common pink rambler.

Do the blooms fade to white or have any white? Anne, I think you are probably right.

The blooms do seem to fade lighter and do have white around the bottom. Do you think this roadside rose is worth trying to root from a cutting once the "icky" stuff is gone?
