Wild Rose?

My husband and I just moved into a new house and we inherited a lot of plants and flower I can't identify.

One on the top of my list is what I suspect to be a "wild" rose bush. This bush is heavily populated with thorns, much more than the typical rose bush. Also, it only blooms once a year (right now, late spring). The blooms are yellow and about 3 in. in diameter.

The other unique quality to this bush is that it seems to have baby shoots all around it. I can't tell if they are shooting up from the roots of the mature bush, or if they are sprouts from seedlings, but these sprouts have the same (painful) dense amount of thorns.

Any ideas on what type of rose bush this is and how I should maintain it?

Thanks.

RE: Wild Rose?

Considering your zone (same as mine) and your description, it sounds like Harison's Yellow. A link below to some photos.

It's a wonderful rose (originally bred circa 1824). It's tough and vigorous and it will spread, so you'll probably want to keep it under control. It's very pretty when in bloom.

The leaves do not look like the "typical" foliage of roses. Compare the leaves to those in the photos and see what you think.

Enjoy!
