Name That Rose!

New barewoot rose has brown stipe on each cane

I bought a Heaven on Earth bareroot rose from Jackson&Perkins in May2009 and planted it in a sunny location. Dug a deep wide hole and put great soil in it, but I am concerned that the clay soil underneath will be a drainage issue for the rose. The canes were green when I planted it, but about a week after planting, I noticed brownish stripe on each cane! Can someone tell me what happened? Is my 1st attempt at growing a bareroot rose a failure?! I was so excited about growing this beautiful fragrant rose. Hope it is not dead. Is watering it every day (on a drip system) too much because of the clay soil underneath it?

That being said, can you dig next to the bush and check to see if the water is draining?

It is normal to see some die-back on the canes after you plant a bareroot rose bush. This is usually followed by new growth after the roots start spreading into the surrounding earth. The new growth can take several weeks to appear, so try to be patient.
