It could be a hybrid wichurana called Shafter and Dr. Huey. That pretty red climbing rose has long been used as a base onto which other named varieties are grafted.

If the grafted part of the plant dies, Dr. Huey often branches out and starts blooming. If yours is the good doctor, it should have few thorns.

Looks like Dr. Huey to me. It is a once-blooming (in the spring) climber.

petaloid and diane nj,thank you so very much,for your helpful expertise. I just went back to my neighbor to look at the plant. It has thorns every inch or so.
