Ditch Rose

| I found this rose in the ditch. It is hard to say how big it gets because it gets mowed down every few months. I stopped to make sure it wasn't a rootstock and was surprised to find that it has a smell. It is in an area where there used to be old farm houses. I think it is not Dr. Huey because it has a different shape of leaves from the one I have in my yard, the smell - it has one, and the white on the back of the petals of the found rose. The flower is the same size as Dr. Huey. It also appears to be suckering, although it could be that it is mowed into that shape and layered into grass. It is 10 feet across. I can't get much more info yet because it is in really deep farm ditch on a busy road with no parking. I had quite a time getting a single flower.

Looks like the one at the front of my garden, which may have gotten there as a rootstock - I don't remember. You see this and perhaps similar but discrete others here and there, in the manner of rootstock cultivars like 'Manetii' and 'Dr Huey' - as well as other tough roses. One time south of the Arlington airport I may have seen more than one kind of the same ilk growing together at an old place. Think I was inclined to place them with the Hybrid Chinas at one point, but have never taken it far enough to be sure what they should be called.

It could be Ragged Robin, a red China with very few thorns which was a common rootstock at one time. My grandparents had a hedge of that variety at their home here in SoCal. Whatever it is, it's pretty and you did a good job with the photos.

Bboy, you got the location right. How did you do that? I got it off of the side of 67th. I have found numerous roses in the area, including RdR and Paul Ricault. Any suggestions for a name would be helpful. Thanks - Paul

It looks rather china-like. Do you think it is remontant? You are going to take cuttings??? Jeri

I am pretty sure that it does not repeat. I have been driving along that stretch for a year now and did not see it until this spring. It is hard to miss when in bloom. I will take cuttings in a month. The new growth that came after the county mower is still too young. - Paul

Don't you think it could be the China, "Ragged Robin?" I'll put a link to the HelpMeFind listing with photos tab:

I think the petal count is different. This seems to have more. The color of 'Robin' fade out to be the same though. It looks like a beautiful rose. I love the stamens in the close-up photo. - Paul

'Gloire des Rosomanes' ('Jupiter's Lightning', 'Ragged Robin', 'Red Robin') is an obvious suspect but not the same. "One of the hardiest roses ever created, this China is placed in the Bourbon class by some rosarians. Blooming from spring until autumn, the fragrant rose begins with dainty, pointed buds that develop into sparkling maroon or glowing crimson flowers with white streaks. The semi-double, very large, widely cupped blooms appear in clusters and turn purple in hot weather. This rose has been the parent of many other varieties and is often used as a rootstock. 'Gloire des Rosomanes' is a vigorous, upright bush to 5 ft. (1.5 m) covered with prickles on its long branches. It does well on poor soil and produces many orange hips." --Botanica's Roses

How about Cramoisi Superieur? It's another old china that was popular a hundred years ago and the heart-shaped petals remind me of your photos. I used to grow Slater's Crimson China, which may be the same or a seed parent. HelpMeFind shows two photos, one fresh and the other a spent bloom:

Mine is now blooming out in front also. Nice flowers this year. Keep posting pictures of found roses in your area, so we can see how many more times they are roses and places I have already seen! Maybe we should trade notes.
