Yes, double pink old garden rose = a large number of different kinds.

Not Jacques Cartier (or Marchesa Boccella), buds and blooms are not consistent with that variety.

Thank you folks for the follow-ups. At least I now have an idea of what kind of rose I'm planting up and down the streets in our city. My mystery rose looks and acts very much like the Duchesse de Rohan. My only question is: would this variety have been widely available in the Northern Midwest in the early 20th century? I see it fairly often in old homesteads. How come these old varieties of Portland roses aren't readily available at the big, popular retail outlets like Walmart, Home Depot, etc.?

Old garden roses are not a hot item with the general public. And such places carry an extremely tiny percentage of the plant varieties on the market at any one time anyway. You could just as well ask why they don't have any of 70,000 kinds of other garden plants, or why fast food franchises don't offer gourmet dishes.

Well, for my part, I'm giving roots of the Duchesse(?) to anyone who asks for it. Guess I'm just a little in awe of such a beautiful, fragrant rose that will bloom her heart out despite disease, cold and poor soil conditions.
