Rose Newbie with questions

Hi, I am Yvette from Massachusetts. I've always enjoyed roses & have a few planted in my yard. My neighbor started me off with 2 types about 3 years ago. He doesn't know the names of them. One of them has never bloomed. Is there such
rose that never flowers? The other gets very small clusters of whites & alot of rose hips. Would anyone have any idea what they maybe? I will try to get photos this afternoon.
TIA :)

RE: Rose Newbie with questions

On the one that has "never bloomed", are you pruning (cutting) this rose in the fall or spring? It might be a once-bloomer, which means that it blooms in the spring on last year's growth. So, if it is being cut back in the spring, the growth with this years blooms are being cut off and you'll never see it in bloom.

For the other, need photos and more information, see the FAQ for this forum for the questions that will help in identification.

RE: Rose Newbie with questions

I usually prune it just before the first frost. My neighbor never pruned it & he had it for a few years. There were 1 or 2 times that I didn't touch it at all. It grew to over 5'ft. tall & no flowers.
