Hi! I found this rose while on an ATV outing with DH! I noticed the giant hips from a distance, the bush was growing in a field in SW PA,if anyone can help me ID this I would be so grateful! The hips are a little over an inch and of course there were no flowers.Sorry about picture quality! I am asking Santa for a better camera! Thanks~ Angie :)

I was told in the name that plant forum that the fuzzy thing looks like a praying mantis egg caseing,I still wanted to include that pic incase it is important to the ID or if by some chance its not and is part of the bush, there were alot of them through out the bush!

As a wild guess, I'd suggest R. canina (Dog Rose). At least R. canina hips look like that. I can't tell the thorn shape in the picture, but R. canina has hooked thorns that are fairly well spaced on the canes.

If the thorns are straighter and more bristly in places, it might be R. eglanteria/R. rubiginoso (same rose, different names), commonly called Sweetbriar. Did you touch the hips? If you noticed a resin-y green-apple sort-of scent from the hips, it is more likely Sweetbriar. If you go back in the spring, and it is Sweetbriar, the scented leaves will confirm the ID.

While neither are native species, they do naturalize. If it’s one of these two, it would be a once bloomer

Thanks Joan_m ,as a matter of fact I brought some of the hips home to disect and investigate...just a compulsion I have...lol.Well anyway there is no odor to them what so ever and I do not remember any smell coming from the bush or foliage that I brought home.I didnt notice any of the bristly thorns just nice sized well spaced ones,so maybe your first guess is correct. So when I go back to check on it if it is blooming I know that it isnt either of the 2 you mentioned which helps in the process of elimination.:)And then will get a picture of the bloom! And if there is no bloom to take a picture of then I bet you are right on the Dog Rose,I will be dissappointed though, because I was really looking foward to snagging a cutting and enjoying it's fall display year after year! Thanks so much for your input I really appreciate it!:) ~Angie
