Please recommend a small climbing rose for new rose grower

Hi. This is a request for my good friend Lillian. (I am only growing roses 1 yr so don't want to recommend yet).

She has a small spot in her yard that she wants to grow a small climber on a trellis up against her house. The spot does NOT get a lot of sun. Also, it should be very easy to grow and not require spraying for bs which is a problem on Long Island.

Please let me know what might work good for her, and thanks!

Maureen

You might tell her to try something like Altissimo, a beautiful, single (5 petals) red rose, or maybe Climbing Pinkie, which is a little larger and should also be okay in your climate. Pinkie has clusters of small pink fully-petaled flowers and is probably the more disease-resistant of the two.

But, be aware, no rose is going to be disease-resistant or flower well with less than 5 or 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.

Field - thank you for your suggestion. I am having my friend look at pictures of the 2 you recommended. Thanks

Maureen

I was looking for a small climber that had some shade tolerance and came across "Climbing Opal Brunner" it is said to have fragrance and an old fashioned look to it. Ashdown may carry it.

Thanks Luxrosa. I decided a while ago to go with Parade. I'll have to check out cl. opal runner anyway :)
