Veganic Organic Rose Growing

I learned a new term for the kind of organic gardening I've been doing. Since I've been a vegan who doesn't eat meat or milk for eight years, I've carried the idea into my garden that it should also be free of animal by-products like bonemeal, blood meal, and animal manures. I think it's safer (with issues of BSE) and I feel better that I am not supporting the killing of animals or confinement in factory-like farms. I use alternatives like compost from green sources and alfalfa meal, and rock phosphate or superphosphate. Seaweed instead of fish fertilizer too.

I'm not trying to be preachy here; I just wanted to share what I feel comfortable doing. So, I was wondering if anyone else growing roses here is doing the same thing, and has other suggestions for non-animal products?

I tried the cornmeal as a blackspot cure experiment (see garden experiments forum), and although the cornmeal in my experience didn't prevent or eliminate blackspot, it has some nitrogen.

dumb question. Why not subsitute bone meal for free range non fertilized chicken eggs? THat way your not supporting the factory farms but local farms that have happy chickens. And heh the last local one i went too had a nice rooster that let my kids pet him:) My daughter even got to go pick up some eggs.

What is bse?

To each his (or her) own, but you should be aware that superphosphate is not acceptable in an organic gardening program.

moonwolf, BSE stands for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, or Mad Cow Disease. There are concerns (from England?) about it possibly being passed onto human via improper handling of bone meal. There was a discusion of BSE on the roses forum awhile back. No question is a dumb question.

I'll have to look.

Oh well more ways for me to be frugal:) I"ll use the bonemeal i have and use eggs instead and any leftover seafood stuff.
