Hi Vixenmoon: Welcome to the Rose Forum! For disease control, read the thread "Cornell Formula" on this forum. I like a natural organic fertilizer formulated especially for roses like Mills Magic Mix (order online) or Dr. Earth (at Freddy's or any of the garden stores). If you live in the Portland area, you may be interested in attending a meeting of the Portland Rose Society. Most are not organic gardneners but you can still learn a lot about roses. They meet the third Monday of the month and at the Feb. and March meetings, you can get your soil analyzed and pruners sharpened for free! March is the Vendor Fair, with tons of free garden goodies given away by the merchants! Do you know what variety that one rose is? Depending on what type it is, you may want to be pruning it soon...

You might want to find out for sure that the rose does not have a patent before propogating!)

Get the level of organic matter in your soil up to optimum levels, mulch so the soil stays evenly moist but is well drained are key. A soil that is rich in nutrients with lots of organic matter so the soil bacteria provide the nutrients the plant needs when it needs it and you won't need to buy "fertilizers".
