Spraying BT - where and how much?

The Winter Moth really did damage to our area last year, and I vowed that this year I would take precautionary measures. I have read that I should use a spray of BT in late march, early April.

My question is, should I spray the soil / mulch around the roses to get the moth eggs, too? And If it rains, do I need to re-apply?

Bt only works if caterpillars ingest it. Spraying needs to coincide with bud development and should only be directed to the buds. Bt has no effect whatsoever on eggs or adult moths, and should not be applied to the soil.

Call your local extension office to find out what the recommendations are for timing in your area. It will vary greatly from location to location, depending upon climate and weather conditions.
