newbie here...rose help needed...planted last year.

Hi. We just bought our first home.this year after renting it for a year. Last year I moved the roses that were randomly threw the yard to our front yard so I can start a rose garden. I have six and five made it. I have not watered them nor done anything with the soil except put down mulch (brown wood chips) and keep weeks out of the area. They looked great and a couplepproduced allot of roses but I would like to take care and make them beautiful again. Just not sure what do do.......pruning....adding things to the soil...I would like to do everything organically and no chemicals and do everything without buying anything. Any suggestions??

Hi Bella: Welcome to Organic rose forum! You are in zone 10, is your climate hot & dry CA, or is it humid and rainy like FL?

I have sisters both in CA, and in FL. CA is alkaline & dry with alkaline tap water, thick-mulch & drip irrigation helps. FL is sandy & humid & rainy with more leaching, thus more fertilizers needed.

If you have frequent rainfall, Chikity-doo-doo at $8 per HUGE bag, NPK 5-3-2, would be cheapest, just put that under the mulch. If you have dry & hot summer like CA, bagged, LOW NPK ratio like bagged compost, put under mulch would be best.

The higher the N ratio, like 5 in chicken manure would burn in hot & dry weather. But for a humid & rainy climate like FL, more nitrogen is needed due to leaching in sandy soil. Nitrogen mobility is a 10, it moves with water.
