going to seaweed country--advice needed

We are making a trip to the mainland-facing side of Vancouver Island in about 10 days. It is pretty unsullied there and I was thinking of collecting some seaweed to bring back for my roses and tomatoeos. Is this a good idea? And how would I compact it down to 'nothing'? Dry it in the sun? If I stuff garbage bags of it into the van DH is SURE to object(what with camping gear and two kids and all). Do I rinse it first? Will it stink up the van after a couple days?

Rinse them with fresh water to get the salt out, then you can dry them. They smell fine when dried, having just a little seafood flavor. You can soak them again be before using them.

I may have visions of sushi rolls dancing in my head. Good thing there is first class sushi to be found on BC's coast.

I think you'll enjoy both.
