Can disease be spread from inherited styrofoam covers?

My husband was talking to a guy from work about my roses. This guy laughed out loud when he explained that I was insisting on being organic. This guy explained that his wife recently dug up her roses because she was so frustrated by all the diseases they kept getting and that I would surely give up too. He outright suggested I was a nut for thinking I could grow roses without chemicals!
So they gave us their styrofoam winter covers. Nice...but do I dare use them if their plants were disease ridden? I (knock on wood) have not had any issues thus far so I'm a bit wary.
The covers have obviously been well used and they stink of something (chemicals??) to boot.
Do I dare use them??
Thanks

| Diseases that are chronic in your area will find susceptible varieties soon enough. Minimizing disease means selecting the most resistant varieties, or else using organic disease controls regularly, rather than trying to exclude contagion from the garden, which is impossible. If you have a new garden, disease may get worse in the second year regardless. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to use the cones after rinsing them. |
