Cleaning nippers?

Posted by MapleLeafMama 5A ONT (My Page) on

I'm wondering what I should use to clean my nippers so I don't spread disease. (black spot)
Would a wipe off with rubbing alcohol be sufficient?
Thanks
Sandy

I don't think pruners are likely to spread black spot. They could spread stem canker or crown gall, if present. Apparently there is a very slight chance of spreading mosaic virus.

Lysol is a handy disinfectant that doesn't corrode tools. A dip or spray would be better than a wipe. I don't routinely disinfect, myself.

Generally recommended is a solution of 1 part chlorine bleach, and the new sodium hydroxide bleaches work just as well, to 9 parts water. The general recommendation is to soak the tool in the solution for 5 minutes and let it air dry, not too practical when out working in the yard. Mostly you would only really need do that if you pruned a plant with a diease and then were going to prune a plant without that disease.
