 o
guidance needed please

Hello,
I hope someone here can help me, because the garden center I bought these at can't. I purchased two climbinb roses the summer before last and planted them beside the gazebo that was given to us. My thoughts; the red roses climb up the lattice and look beautiful. Reality, the roses climb and bloom but die back in the winter here in NE Ohio and I have to start all over the next spring, we never get beautiful full climbing roses. I put leaves around the bases of the roses thinking that will help, but it doesn't.
The plants I purchased ar J&P Stairway to Heaven and J&P Blaze. The rose bushes look healthy while they are growing, I keep them tied, sprayed, bug and disease free. Does anyone know of a climbing and/or rambling rose who's canes won't die back and would do well here? I wanted red, but anything but a white rose would suite me fine. I like color as most of the property is in the woods in the shade, but my flower gardens and gazebo are in the full sun.
Thank you so much for your help, Kathy

Ramblin Red is good red climber, but will die back in a tough winter here in central OH.
Quadra is a Canadian Explorer red climber; totally hardy here and healthy without spraying; blooms steadily; only fault is stiff thorny canes which are difficult to train;
1 gal own root plants of Quadra are available from rosefire.com in NW Ohio for $12 plus small shipping charge.

Living in the deep south, I don't have a clue what rose would do well in your climate.

We had a speaker come in and talk to us about Dr. Buck and his research to develope roses that would do well in harsh winter conditions such as yours. Might be worth a google search and a litte reading to see if any of the Buck roses would meet your needs.

U need a good Explorer Rose, developed by Canadian Dept. of Agriculture Rose Breeding program. John Cabot springs to mind, it is red, had blooms that look a little like smallish HT's, will be fully cane hardy and give lots of blooms.
William Baffin is a huge climber, but I don't like the lesser number of blooms, and the lesser quality of the blooms.
John Cabot it is. Paul Mozarowski.

I wrote to all of you and thanked you for your help, but just in case I missed anyone, "thank you"!

I have a John Davis (pink) that is cane hardy for me in my zone 4b. It has a big flush in June and reblooms later in the summer.
