Rose seedling and Winter Hardiness

Last year in Febraury, I started the seeds of Open Pollinated Alexander Mckenzie and two of the rose seedling that have grown Are so wonderful. They flowered so profusely for me, with their lotus-shaped like petals and almost the size of my palm. And then, I put them in the ground in the fall  in the last week of October. I donÂt know if I should not have done it. And the winter in Wisconsin (Waukesha) was very severe. I protected the roses with leaves around them.

I am concerned about them now. Three days back, I went and saw that some stems have kind of became very soft and kind of very wetty  They turned their color to very dark brown.

I am wondering, if they will come up alive in Spring. I very much hope they are alive. Generally, is it not that A OP seedling of a very hardy rose is hardy too. Should I not have planted in the ground ?
