Germiniating Store Bought Seeds....When Should I Start them?

Posted by stephaniesgarden 8 (My Page) on

I am attempting to hybridize this year and I am so anxious to get started that I can't stand it. I wanted to do a trial and error run on the seeds them self this year while waiting for the hips and planting the others at the end of this year/early next year.

I bought 4 kinds of 'rose shrub' seeds. There are 200 in each set so I should have about 800 seeds.

I know that they probably needed to be chilling since December by what I have read online. However, I will be getting them in the mail this week. They are proffessional seeds, not out of someones garden so I am hopeing they will have a high success rate.

Anyone know if I will be ok since it's almost springs? Should I throw them in the fridge, plant them or what?

I am in Florida and the temps are in the 30's and 40's right now (wierd I know). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

RE: Germiniating Store Bought Seeds....When Should I Start them?

By the way, the seeds are

White Japanese Rose
Rosa rugosa 'alba'

Red Japanese Rose
Rosa rugosa 'rubra'

Father David's Rose
Rosa davidii

Father Hugo Rose
Rosa hugonis

The Rugosa's say they hip very well, will the others do the same?

Can you grow them by stem cuttings?

Can I pollenate and collect there pollen for Hybrid Teas, Floribundas and those types of roses?
