Sports-can they be initiated?

I am interested in this, because my New Dawn (alas, deceased in Katrina) once put out a single bloom. It was fabulous, and I was hoping I had a sport going, but of course I watched that branch and it never happened again.
Is there any way to force a plant to sport? Chemicals, radiation, other forms of plant abuse? I assume this has been tried by those more knowledgeble than me (not a hard criteria to meet).

Apparently you can increase your chances (not ensure, just make it more likely) of a sport by propagating from root cuttings rather than from stem cuttings. Thanks to Kenny of Berlin for the link--it was in another thread.

Here is a link that might be useful: propagating from root cuttings
