Frozen Pots? Dr Huey, Fortuniana, own roots...

A local nursey still had some left over potted roses that were frozen in thier black pots.

I "ice picked" them out of thier Hay Bale- winter protection -enclosure and bought them. The black plastic pots were frozen solid. They are starting to thaw out,due to rain, but it is going to freeze again this week.

Now, last year I bought some roses from another nursery under the same conditions. I did lose three out of thirty roses.

Both batches, looked greenish and alive when they are frozen.

This last group are Star roses from the House of Meidiland.

So my question is: What determines hardiness,is it the root stock, is it how slowly they freeze, is it luck, what happens during the domant process. My winter over tree roses always die in my basement, but my frozen tree roses live. Why don't most of them die? I don't winter protect any of my roses anymore because of this mystery.
