i wanted to plant tomatoes next to my roses....can this be done without hurting my roses.....help!

let it grow....if it gets too top heavy then you can cut it back

you can fertilize it now since its in active growth

you just want growth now, so any regular fertilizer is fine

you dont have to buy that more expensive rose fertilizer, its like a lot of the other ones....just look at the numbers on the back

The reason the lower leaves are smaller is because they were put on when the roots were smaller. Now your roots are larger and they are putting on a larger plant. those lower leaves will eventually fall off, of course and next season all the leaves on this rose will be similar size, with largest at the bottom nearest the roots and proportionally smaller towards the growing tips.

The word on store-bought fertilizers is 'less is more.' If you are using a liquid rose food fertilizer, use half the recommended strength. If you are using something like compost tea you can put it in the water whenever you water your rose.
