Polar Joy -- Make it into a Standard

I have a superhardy Polar Joy that has sent out one long, thick cane (along with smaller ones at the base). I'm wondering if I can't turn that big cane into a kind of standard, by letting several of the shoots grow near the top of the cane and (eventually) rubbing out the ones below it. Anyone have experience to help me here? Thanks. Gary
