No, no no. Do not fertilize a stressed rose. Water is all that it needs now. Do not fertilize until it is covered in new leaves. Also, there IS a bud union, it is at the top of the plant. You'll have to plant this in a pot and find some way to bring it inside for the winter, it is not winter hardy in your area (they are not winter hardy here). It is probably a hybrid tea standard (tree) rose. Did it have a tag? That would tell the variety name.

Thanks so much for the input. I guess it only makes sence that the union would be at the base, as it is on the other roses. So, trying to winter that will be a problem. Will it be OK inside or should I farm it out to someone with a garage or better yet a green house for the winter?

The soil is so incredibly hard, it doesn't hold moisture and is almost like cement. I think I will re pot it and give it a better environment, a good soil mixed with some compost. Should I keep the same sized pot or could it stand to go up a size? I really want this plant to not only make it, but thrive, but being one who has never had a tree rose before, I am not sure the proper care they need. Maybe they like poor soil??? My tree roses have long stems...beautiful. So what do I do after I cut a rose and there is still 12 inches left of that stem? Do I cut it back to the main stem? What is a "cane"?
I can't find info on how to trim the tree rose during the spring...not pruning it. Just how to trim back the long stems left after cutting roses for my vase. Thanks
