No bud eyes = lost cause?

I just aquired a lovely rose tonight (flower with leaves and a bud eye) that I intend to root. The author of the baggie method talks about a stem having a healthy bud eye, as this is where the new growth comes from. I realize now that the other cuttings I have started in a baggie do not have bud eyes. Other than that I followed procedure. Are they a lost cause?

If they already have a leaf node, then there should be a bud eye at that point.

That said, I have one cutting that I rooted that apparently did not have any bud eyes. It rooted last year, its cane is green and has a good root system, but has not grown a single leaf! Ever!! I have it in the coldframe and keep watering it just to see what it does.

Cheers,
Michelle

Oh I thought he meant a VISIBLE bud eye! So do I need to cut off that visible bud eye then, so it doesn't start rot (does that qualify as 'soft growth'?)

A growing twig with no leaves. That is strange.

Anyway, thanks.

I wouldn't cut it out. It may try to grow a leaf there, though, before it roots.

Yeah, the twig is weird. I thought it might sucker and send up a basal. I feed it, gave it sips of alfalfa tea, tried pruning it a teensy bit... Not a thing happening. I should just put a little shirt on it and call it Mr. Twig.

my mr twig actually put up a basal and bloomed this year

the very first cutting i ever did was from sally holmes. i misunderstood and took the part that was closest to the flower and not a few nodes down. the twig actually stayed alive for two years, it finally put out a basal and one bloom this year

:-) How funny. I guess I will have to keep watering Mr. Twig and see what he does.

Isn't he lovely? He doesn't look a day older than he did last year, when I stuck him.

Cheers,
Michelle

Mr Twig is very beautiful. Have you thought of entering him in a beauty contest?

What is his secret to that youthful glow I wonder?
