I cannot see the pic, But I have Harrison roses in by back yard.They can get pretty tall. They spread by runners under ground. An old stump would work to contain it. they bloom all at once usually in late my. Every 5/6 years I cut them all back to the ground. This gives them a new look and revitalizes them. I have two older plants that are more than 2 feet in diameter at the base. The canes are 8-10 feet. You're digging a pot in the stump. I'm not sure how water will drain or how roots will get into the ground. You might get away with the 1 foot diameter it looks like you have; but, I would think you want to get closer to 2 feet in diameter and as deep as you can go.

The hole is about a foot and a half to two feet wide. I'm killing myself trying to hack the wood out (locusts are HARD :-D ).

Do you know how deep I would have to dig to take one out of the ground that's only about a foot and a half tall? It looks like it just sprouted this year, and I have no idea how deep the roots usually run. :-/

If you are talking about a sucker, there will be a connection to the parent plant 6-12" down. There may be little or no root. The advice I was just given is to severe the sucker from the parent and give it some time to grow its own roots.
