took a 'rose walk' this morning

All the roses are in bloom, so being a newbie I wanted to see them in their 'natural state', not all soft-lensed and touched up like in books and websites. It was interesting to see which colors really popped out and which were just blah, some where different from what I expected. Saw a lavender one that made me drool, and a beautiful orange one.
I was admiring a coral colored lovely that was growing near the road and I noticed the lady of the house outside sweeping her deck. I complimented her on her roses and and asked if I could cut a stem. She said 'sure'. I wonder what she thought when I whipped the pruners out of my coat pocket, ready for action? Got another stem of what appears to be Memorial Day. Nobody was home and the bush looked somewhat neglected. I got the impression that the roses lived there before the tenants did and they couldn't care less. Unfortunately this is often the way. Sure hope it roots for me.
However I still do not have the gall to ring somebody's doorbell and ask if I can cut a stem off their rose. But it is coming to that. I don't know how long I can hold out with that juicy orange one. |

| I'm way too shy to bother anyone. But I think it's great when gardeners share. Hope you get that orange rose cutting you want. |

I knocked on the door, rang the doorbell, and no answer. So I snipped off a stem close to the bottom. The bloom is floating in a shallow dish of water as I wait for the stem to take root. That flower lasts a LONG time in water. Sure hope it takes. I always knock first. But call me: The Rose Raider |

| Rose Raider :) You inspired me! I took a 'rose' walk yesterday and found a GIANT rose bush in front of an abandon house. I now have 3 cutting from it and am attempting my first rose bushes from cuttings. I saw many more that I would have liked to have but I wasn't brave enough to raid any others LOL Marie |

I have a few started now in ziplock baggies. I marked the out side of the bag which 'batch' it is, but not each individual stem. Trouble is, there are some that I REALLY want to make it and others it doesn't matter so much. SO when I pull one out because of rot I don't know what I have left. Another poster had a brilliant idea. She uses nursery pots IN the bag. More stable, the soil does not crack around the stems every time the bag gets nudged, and you can put individual tags in each pot. And the bag provides the controlled environment you need. MUCH easier. The best of both worlds. I am not sure who mentioned using that set up, but if you happen to read this, KUDOS to you! |
