Disease and seedlings...

Do seedlings seem to grow out of their lack of resistance or are they always going to be susiptable?

Many of my seedling babies sem to be coming down with black spot and powdery mildew, a few are perfectaly healthy.

Anyone know?

Gerry

Hi Gerry,

I want to know this also. I have a lot with powdery mildew here.

Oh.. remember how we talked about dark colored/chocolate colored leaves? The ones that I have with this coloring are the ones that have the biggest amount of PM.

No blackspot here to speak of.

I know I have read on other forums that the more experienced hybridizers pull the weaklings and the diseased right away. I would guess their experience has shown them that the disease resistance does not get better. PM however I would think could be dependent on growing conditions.. outside vs inside a greenhouse?

Marleah,

I have also heard of the big breeders culling the bad roses from the start, but it is such a painfull process for the amateurs like you and I, wish I had enough space to plant them and see...maybe time for a new raised bed.

sigh...Gerry

Gerry,

How big are the seedlings?
You might give them a spraying with something and see if the "disease" resolves if they are hardy enough to stand it?

Have you checked the Rose Hybridizers Association website? They have a forum where a lot of rose breeders- some amateur and some a LOT more experienced post.

You can email me direct if you like and I can send you a link if needed
