how fresh do florist roses need be for rooting?

I was scoping out two of the flower shops in town today. One had a pail of reduced roses by the stem because they probably only have a day or so left of being able to sell them. I touched one and the petals started coming off. Should I go for something fresher or should I wait a day and go dumpster diving for them? (Kidding!) but seriously how far gone can a cut rose be and still be able to root it?

I would go for as fresh as possible but if they are real cheap or free - what the heck - go for it.

Based upon the theory of nothing or very little to lose if it doesn't work.
