Crosses with promise.

Two of the results of 2006 crosses, germinated in 2007.

Parade x Eglantyne

This one has a growth habit, thorns and leaves very close to Eglantyne. It is fragrant. This is a bit of a fluke, as Eglantyne produces scanty pollens {{gwi:301461}}

Parade x A Shropshire Lad

This one did not bloom in 2007 - which is one of my criteria for culling first year seedlings. But it showed the growth habits of a climber, so I kept it for 2008. Through the winter of 07-08, it was abused, having been left outside in a 2 inch pot, which then completely froze solid. It was the only one of 50 seedlings to survive such harsh treatment that year. The first blooms in 2008 were not particularly appealing, but then, it looked even more like a climber. So I kept it for another year. Looks like my decision is justified, as the 2009 blooms look good, and it seems to really want to bloom. I have a feeling that the blooms will increase further in size with maturation. Moderate fragrance.
