Grafting Question

An Iowa State University Extension Service horticulturalist demonstrated how to graft. I just had him graft a budeye from Sunsprite onto Carefree Beauty, in part so I would know that it took. Well I know it took, although it was done just a few weeks ago, and I am anxious to see yellow blooming with pink just for the fun of it.

Now I want to graft a plant for a more serious application. I think we have a Dr. Huey growing, and I want to know, do you root Dr. Huey in a small pot, and then graft onto it, or is it better to graft onto a more substantial Dr. Huey cane that has suckered a bit farther away from the Dr. Huey bush, and then after the graft takes, dig that little guy up and transplant it?
