It sounds like the stem had a callous, which is the beginning stage of rooting. Keep the cuttings from drying out -- a tent, or the top of a soda bottle, etc., and cross your fingers. What varieties are you rooting?

If I were in Sicily, I would practice the Omerta.

I did the same thing with a couple of my gardenias - put them in the pots and you can tent them or cut a two liter bottle off (take about 3" off the bottom) and use the top part as your tent. You can take the lid off the bottle if it gets too much moisture. Keep it in bright light but not direct sun for about another 3 or 4 weeks and you should be good to go! Good luck.

Update:
One is looking fine. New growth from the leaf node. The other looks like your average stick. Not doing anything visible above ground but not visibly rotting either so I am going to keep the cover on until it goes one way or the other.
