How do you mail live roses?

I was wanting to send a friend a rose, but I don't know how to send it in a pot. Can you wait until winter then dig it up and send it bareroots like nurseries do? I know companies send out live plants, but I just have never bought one. The roses are a year old. I know most people mail cuttings. Do you think the postage would cost more than the rose is worth? Thanks for any suggestions

Very small roses are best sent with soil. A year old rose, if it is reasonably vigorous, should be old enough to go bare root.

It's been a while since I shipped any. Check out the post office charges for boxes shipped Priority Mail. The weight will be the weight of the rose (light) and the weight of wet newspapers or whatever moist material gets wrapped around the roots (potentially very heavy) The shipping costs should be the minimum. If it weights more than that charge, there is too much water for shipping purposes.

When you do it should correspond to your friend's normal, bareroot season. You don't want it traveling during times of extreme cold.
