Why are my cuttings dieing??

I successfully rooted alot of cuttings in July and August this year. When we had a particularly nasty cold spell I put them in trays and brought them in the basement and put Gro-Lites in the light fixture. I put them directly under the lights and I sprayed them twice daily to keep them moist. However, they started dying right away. Within three days they were drying up as if they aren't getting enough moisture although I know for a fact they are. Any clue what is causing them to dry up and die like this when moving them into the basement? Also, I did shut off the heat vent so them room they are in stayed very cool and comfortable. For now I have moved them back outside onto the deck, but I know eventually they will have to come back in again when winter really sets in. What should I do??
