Need some quick suggestions for baby roses

Posted by peninsula_petals z5 (My Page) on

Last night's deep freeze, upper teens, caught me completely by suprise. Overnight temps up until then had been upper 30's, so I had not taken my 200 baby potted roses into the unheated garage where they would be spending the winter yet. Many still had buds on them.
This morning I am struggling with what I can do, if anything, to save them. The pots (dirt) are frozen solid. I've moved them all into the garage, but don't know if it will make no difference now. Have the frozen roots determined they are all goners?
I am giving up my garage for them in Michigan for the winter, mind you, but if there's no hope and I've killed them, I might as well use the garage myself.
I'm simply heartsick, as most of these roses I had propagated for family members that visited my garden in the summer. I was going to give them out in the spring after breaking dormancy and growing a little.

Should I give them a water, to maybe unfreeze the soil? Suggestions....PLEASE!!!!

Thank you....Mindy

Hello Mindy

I think the roots should still be o.k. I would just keep them
in the garage overwinter. Most roses can easily survive upper teens. Just keep them frozen as is, thawing them out won't do anything at this point. Possibly the buds are done, but even those maybe not. Some of my roses in a mild 4b winter survived right out to the tip of the cane, because they were covered in snow (Bonica), and next spring kept right on growing from the bud at the very tip. If you had said 10 below, then I would say worry, otherwise, not. Paul Mozarowski.

How are they looking today? Seems to me like they would mostly have been OK, but I am interested to hear.

I put some of my small ones out last night so the aphids would freeze their little green hineys.

Cheers,
Michelle
