we just bought a home with a very well established garden that has spent the last 2-3 years uncared for. the side of the house is lined with 6+ old rose bushes (oh no i'm allergic to roses!), if they are dormant can we move the roots or will it kill them? i would like to make a rose garden on the far side of the property =)

If you can beat the cold, I would move them now, making sure that the bud union, that knob at the base of the canes before the roots, is below grade 2 to 4". Cut the canes back to make the move easier. The roses don't need them now anyway. Water them in well. I uasually plant in the native earth, and any ammendments I add are placed on top. If you have some mulch like oak leaves, which will not mat or break down easily over winter, cover the rose canes with it. Some people use soil from elsewhere, but that is too much work for me.
You shouldn't have too much trouble. I just transplanted 15, and have another 5 to go but no where to replant them.
Cheers,
Steve.
