FOTESS stands for Friends of the Earth Simple Swaps. You must be a member of the group in order to participate in this swap. If you would like to find out more about joining the group, contact Jeanne or Shirley (or ask a question on this thread and we'll get you connected)!

Birthday Bash!!!
(birthday box or birthday bag)

Answer these questions and post them on the thread. This way we'll get to know a little bit more about each other. This is not supposed to be intimidating, just FUN! Even if you would rather skip the Swap part, feel free to post answers to the questions (please).
1. If you were planning your own party, what would your favorite themes be? (list 5)
2. Favorite birthday experience, tradition or gift.
3. If you could choose any birth date, what date would you choose? Why?

If you want to sign up for the swap, here's what we're doing!
Since we all have different birthdays this is a way we can all celebrate them! You get to send a Birthday in a Box (or envelope). Imagine what they would like, what you like--creativity encouraged. Of course upcycling is always applauded.

Example:
Star Wars Birthday in a Bag
Star Wars napkins, 1 pkg.
Princess Leia doll, 4" tall
Star Wars plastic table cover
6 red balloons
6 black balloons
1 pkg. Texas STAR seeds (Star Wars--Texas Star...see the connection?)

Hint: Please try to include 1 package of seeds that goes along with the theme!

Upcycle Ideas:
Make your own confetti or table trimmers. Mix up and place in a little baggie.
Have 3 Barney invitations left from a kids party? Use that to start your Birthday in a Box!

When I get my Birthday In A Box I'm going to have a party. Even though it's nobody's birthday in my home at the time, we're going to decorate and enjoy during our evening meal just to have fun and do something different! Don't pack your Birthday in a Bag away and forget it. Enjoy it!

Sign up date: Feb. 6
Mail out date: Feb. 19

Cumpleanos Feliz!
Heidi
(game coming in February)

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

What a fun theme, Heidi! I love it and will definitely sign up.

1. If you were planning your own party, what would your favorite themes be? (list 5)
#1 I love things related to Holland (my favorite flower is the daffodil and I love Blue Delft items and windmills)
#2 Things relating to France: the Eiffel Tower, Paris, Fleur-de-lis design, French foods, etc.
#3 Things that are horse related and my new horse is black so a black horse (or even better is a black Appaloosa with a white blanket pattern)
#4 Italian theme: special places in Italy, Italian foods, etc.
#5 St. Patrick's Day theme - I was out of town on my birthday last year so my husband and I did that and celebrated my birthday on St. Patty's Day, a fun change from the usual.

2. Favorite birthday experience, tradition or gift.
One year for my birthday, my younger daughter (who may have been around junior high school age at the time) completed a craft kit that I had ordered and she did it after her bed time and when I was away so I had no clue she was making it - it's a 3-dimensional plastic canvas windmill with a music box inside so it was a big project and would have been a challenge for me to complete so I was so surprised and amazed she was able to make that on her own! Another year my husband gave me a wooden windmill that is in my garden - about 5' high. I love that a lot, too, and what a fun gift!

3. If you could choose any birth date, what date would you choose? Why?
I actually like the birthday I have although occasionally it falls on Good Friday and that's not good. A few times it has fallen on Easter - much better!

I feel like my answers might make it hard for someone to send to me, if so - just be creative and do any theme to surprise me!

Jeanne

What fun answers!
I did a very crazy thing today. I've been watching tulip bulbs at a nearby store to see if/when they would go on clearance. They went to half price and I bought too many. I was watching to see if they went lower. Well, they wanted to get rid of them so they sold them for 2 cents per bag! Tulips, daffodils, muscari and a few iris rhizomes. I bought all 145 bags--yep, I'm crazy! (The good crazy, not the kind that stalks people.) Just had a friend pass away from cancer this week and I got permission to plant the bulbs in a public park as a Garden of Hope for those with cancer and their families. I'm so blessed.

Heidi - what a score with those tulip bulbs and what a way to remember with planting a Garden of Hope. I sure hope you have someone helping dig those holes! It is amazing they still had bulbs in stock. Just before the end of the year I went to a farm store that closes after December until March, so was fortunate it was the last day. I asked for a deal on buying what was left (mostly minor bulbs, some daffs, no tulips) I ended up paying $50 for over $200 value. These are for camp and a few pots for here at our home at camp.

Love the theme. I'm in, but will write my replies later. I worked all day today, but I'm going outside because it is 46 and not raining! I might even put one of the rabbits on the grass to get some nibbling & exercise in. I won't mind if they nibble on any plants this time of year, but they'll want the grass most of all anyway.

Still amazed at Heidi's score of 2 cents a bag. Those bags were meant for you!

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

2 cents a bag! Heidi, that was a fantastic find.

I'll sign up this month. These are my answers:

If you were planning your own party, what would your favorite themes be? List 5.
1. Blue and green and in-between (my favorite colors are blue greens and green blues)
2. Backyard Chickens
3. Magical Garden Poetry
4. Tropical Paradise (the drinks, the plants, the color, the heat, lol)
5. University of Kentucky Basketball

Favorite birthday experience, tradition or gift.
My mother has made my favorite Orange Chiffon cake for my birthday since I discovered that I loved it when I was 12. Now I am an old lady, and my mother is a very old lady so this has been going on for decades. Every year, no matter where I am my mother has called me to come by and pick up my cake-even years when I lived hundreds of miles from her. This year she called me as usual and I went to pick up my delicately flavored Orange Chiffon cake. On the beautiful antique cake stand she always uses for my birthday was a beautiful Carrot Cake. She was so happy to have made my favorite cake. So now, and as long as I am lucky enough to have one made for me, my favorite cake is Carrot and I will never let on otherwise.

If you could choose any birth date, what date would you choose? Why?
September 30 is my birthday and I am perfectly happy to keep it there. I can't imagine a spring birthday, or a winter one, so I will stick with summer's end.

I'm in! Great idea, Heidi!

If you were planning your own party, what would your favorite themes be?
1. Willie Nelson/Vincent Van Gogh - that party could get tricky real quick!
2. An "Aries" party, or any of the fire signs;
3. Paperdolls;
4. Junkfood!! like Wendy's, McDonald's and especially Burger King!!
5. Candlemas

2. Favorite b-day experience: the year my mom bought me size 12 jeans, when I've never worn anything above an 8 even when pregnant! But we did have a good time exchanging them!

3. My birthday is April 15, and everyone always said "oh Income tax day!" before they wished me a happy b-day. Used to wish for the 14th. And I had a cousin whose b-day was the day before Christmas, wow, the presents she got! Would have liked that one too!

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

Ok, I am in! Not as creative I don't think as some of you but have alot of things I'd love mine to be!
Themes-
1. chocolate and roses! Can't go wrong with either of these! Reds and browns
2. Birds and Butterflies! Love anything to do with either of these-for inside or out!
3. Springtime-lilacs, daffs all those beautiful lavender and yellow spring flowers-the ones you've waited all winter on!
4. pink memories-all the wonderful pink hearts, pink flowers, pink things for myself and memory of those before me. Love the pinks!
5. Rock on! Anything to do with gems, rocks, crystals, polished rocks, etc. Large bouquets of iris and daylilies with beautiful rocks or marbles in the vase!
I could come up with many more, so whatever any one sends I will love!

Traditions-
My mother always made me a birthday dinner and a chocolate cake every year! It was always the same, my fav. Large garlic pork roast (she slit the meat and filled with huge garlic cloves! yum), mashed potatoes, asparagus, and strawberry banana jello salad, and homemade hot rolls. I can almost taste it now. I have tried making it for myself many times, and although it was good, it wasn't as good as hers! As for memory, I remember when I was 13 the neighbor lady, Betty, made me a chocolate cake and had the set of the Beatles on top of it. The whole band set, drums, people and all! Was I ever excited! I had seen them on the Ed Sullivan show! Some of you may not remember this! But I sure do!

3. Birthdate-my birthday is February 15th. When I was a kid I hated it because it was always cold and snowy and couldn't have a cool outside party! But now It's my day and I am thrilled it is! I was my mother's sweetheart baby!

Melinda

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

I love all of your ideas! Here are mine:
1. Butterflies
2. Flowers of any kind, color, paper, plastic, or alive.
3. Maxine, the crabby Hallmark lady who is very cynical, sarcastic and too true! Id invite my favorite 10 friends. We'd all show up in dirty bunny slippers with old lady wigs carrying a stuffed toy dog just like Maxine. Everybody would get a Maxine card for the birthday girl-no gifts. That way the birthday girl can complain just like Maxine would that nobody got her a gift! Lol
4. Crafts. I'd have a party where everyone came and instead of Pin the Tail on the Donkey or Twister we'd make things out of paper. We'd make paper flowers, tape them to straws and put them in an empty pot for a flower pot center piece!
5. Cinderella! Every girl dreams of a Cinderella party and that would be fun, too! We'd watch the movie, have a perfect white cake with Cinderella on top, pink plastic tableware and Cinderella punch (Hawaiian Punch). Glass slippers optional.

When I was growing up my mom always made her chocolate cake with fudge frosting! Like some of you said...I think I can almost taste it!

I have always liked my birthdate. My favorite aunt is a few days before me and my fraternal grandmother is two weeks after.

Heidi

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

I'm in!!! This was fun to think about.
1. Willy Wonka Wonderland Party. As a little girl I had always hoped there was a place like Willy Wonka's candy room in the first of the movie.(Old version)
2. Garden Tea Party - Big hats and white gloves
3. Camping Weekend Party - I have two boys so we camp and fish and enjoy nature. To do this with all my friends for a weekend would be great fun.
4. Food Party - a little taste of a lot of great food. Without guilty or the bill. lol
5. Swamp Boogie Party - Recently went to see a band that was called a Swamp Boogie Band and it was a lot of fun.

I think it is interesting how many us think back to cakes our mothers' made. Mine is a family recipe passed down from my dad's mother, but my mom makes it for us, known as the three layer cake. One vanilla, one lemon, and one cocoa layer with a special frosting also.

My other favorite memory is my 30th bday. I was recently divorced and not is a great place is life, but my parents and sister surprised me with a weekend away to Door County, WI. Having an October bday it was great to see all the fall colors.

I don't know of a different time of year that I would rather have my birthday. Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons so October suits me fine.

Sorry, ladies, I'm not going to be able to join this month.

This sounds like a super fun swap, but I'm trying to keep life simple (er, simpler) this month. Its going to be hectic with travel (surprise, surprise) plus I'm still working on my class. I should be back in the swing of things in March.

Favorite themes-
1. Crawfish boil!
2. The birds, and the bees, and the flowers, and the trees
3. Dance Party USA
4. Mardi Gras
5. BBQ and Bonfires

Favorite birthday experience -
In 2006, my husband (my boyfriend at the time) and I spent my birthday in the Popo Agie Wilderness, 12 miles backpacked in, just camping, flyfishing for trout, finding natural treasures, and enjoying the incredible scenery. Its one of my most favorite places on Earth.

And finally, I love my birthdate. It's Bastille Day, and I shared that birthday with my godfather, Ray.

Annie,
Our other thread was full and rather than start a new one I just wanted to say your prize for Bingo will be mailed out in a few days. Again, congratulations!

The January Snowflake Swap was fun and is now completed.

What fun birthday celebration themes are being listed here! I knew our members were creative!

Robin, nice to see you! (Yes, Robin is a member and I have her information on file. If she is your partner for February, I will be happy to send that to you.)

5 party themes
~ Everything Pink to signify grace, gentility, joy and happiness. The lighter shades associated with lighter emotions & traits of youth, innocence, grace and happiness.
The darker deeper shades of pinks represent deeper feelings of love, friendship & gratitude. List of pink flowers: http://www.squidoo.com/pink-flowers
~ Veggies: Anything edible & eat with your fingers. Serve hummus dip with carrot sticks in clay pots, blanched green beans, snap peas, fresh tomatoes, salads topped with edible flowers
~ Relaxing Shade Garden: Cool beverage, seat cushion & flowers or foliage. Tuberous begonia, wild sweet William, lilies, impatiens, nasturtium, primrose, hellebore, & bleeding heart. Foliage: groundcovers, hosta, lungwort, & oxalis.
~ Ocean Picnic: Grab an old blanket or sheet, jug of herbal tea, finger foods, sunglasses, bucket & shovel, or collecting bag (reuse onion bag to rinse treasures in the water) & notebook for recording memories/revelations. Find shells, rocks, & driftwood for garden markers.
~Glam Party (Audrey Hepburn style) with rhinestones, pearls, black & white: white flowers, peonies, & other BIG pastel blooms.

Favorite birthday experience, tradition or gift: When my kids set up everything & cooked for my August birthday dinner & served on the back deck with candles, sparkling cider, nice dishes, shrimp, rice, etc.

As a kid I wanted a birthday during the school year, so I could be remembered during the school year instead of on the summer birthday day. As an adult I wouldn't pick another day because I love summer!

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

Sadly, after lurking, lurking, lurking, I have decided I just can't join in this month. My work associate is quitting and this is her last day, being a small gift shop, the owner has a hard time finding someone to work there to really fill in as needed. I am going to have to take up the associates jobs as well as my own at least for the month of February. I am not picking up extra hours, just extra work, (do get a raise). There is a lot I have to learn as far as ordering and displaying. I really want to join in but feel it be best I just wait til next month. Neat idea too.

Have fun everyone. Margo

 o
RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

Awesome theme idea!!! and so much fun :)

I think a few of mine may be repeats of other's lol...sorry, I didn't plan to steal them but already had them in mind while reading thru this thread hahahaha

1)Fireflies, Greenman, Dragons, Dragonflys, Bacchus, Unicorns, Faeries, Fantasy --think Peter Pracownik (artist) style
2)Celtic (celtic lore, art, music)
3)Tailgate (think trucks, radios, grill, bonfire on the river bank)
4)Night time beach party (love the beach at night)
5)Hawaiin Luau

lol Camping, Mardi Gras, and Aries were also in my head...like i said a couple of repeats

Favorite birthday memory: when i was stationed in Germany while in the army 2 of my best friends there shared my birthday (or I shared theirs as they were 2 years older than me)...we celebrated together...I didn't really have family with me for a bit of the time there so they were my family away from home ...

This is a neat idea as our birthdays in our family are almost never celebrated on the exact birthdays...usually circumstances lean to celebrating the weekend after or a bit here and there thru the week or 2 around the actual day...all of us stay really busy and so much going on that we have to PLAN to save a day or weekend for all of us to be together...and we do that every so often anyways so we'll have that family time...

I wouldn't change my birthday :) One of my favorite traditions tho is that on my birthday my kids make me breakfast in bed if it's on a weekend...we always go out to eat for all of our birthdays at somewhere we normally wouldn't go...and my hubby always surprises me with something least expected and somehow manages to keep it a complete surprise lol

 o
RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

I'm in on this one... it should be fun.

My 5 favorite themes would be (although some are repeats):
1. Spring Garden Party
2. Tea Party (could be combined with the above one)
3. Pink and sparkly - everything in light pink, hot pink, and glittery
4. A "Iron Chef" style dinner party, where there are teams formed and each team makes an entree to share... with fondue appetizers to get it started.
5. A kitty party - all things kittens and cats. I could try put my cats into birthday hats, but I don't think that would go well. :)

I like my birthday - its exactly one week after St. Pattys day (March 24th), and I happen to like Shamrock shakes so I celebrate (usually a few days before) with one... so that's a bit of a tradition.

I do occasionally wish my birthday was later in the year so I didn't have the possibility of a blizzard on my birthday (it's happened).

Mandy

Just received my prize(s) for winning BINGO last month. Thank you so much for the decorative bug brads, the iron on bee and the TO DO LIST (with a big bee on it)...."B" for BINGO....LOL! Thank you again for hosting...lots of fun!

Headed out of town for a couple of weeks....Happy February!

I love all the ideas! What great fun. I keeping thinking about being on the beach at night. We don't have beach here. A little sand around a muddy hole. We get waves if the boats go fast enough and are close enough! ha
We're showing off our creative personalities!

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

Just thought I would ask if anyone is having luck with winter sowing? I'm a bit behind with planting this year, but many of my jugs have sprouted and I just put peas in the ground and transplanted onions and microgreens to larger containers. I also need to do something with the Swiss Chard and Cabbage soon. None of these will last once it gets hot, so it's a race to see if anything will be edible before then.
I have 43 jugs planted. Lately because so many of my seeds are old, I have been planting two kinds in each milk jug. The issue had been keeping the jugs wet enough - very little rain and there's wind and sun to keep drying them out, but most of the time they make it anyway. That's what I love about winter sowing...
Okay now back to the regularly scheduled program! LOL
Jeanne

 o
RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

I was out 'watering' my wintersowing jugs today. Didn't get all of them, but I'll finish tomorrow. It's very dry here. I'm in zone 4/5 so I don't have anything sprouting yet and don't expect to for awhile. I'm holding out hope, though!

My WS jugs are setting out there under about 3 inches of snow! YAY!! We finally got snow, at least, we got an appreciable amount. More bout that later!

I'm not doing as much WSing this year, but I do have quite a few types of seeds that need to be sown in February. I might break 100 but somehow I doubt it.

We had the most beautiful snow yesterday! It reminded me of the fairy tale about the old lady in the sky shaking feathers down on everyone. It just looked like the flakes were being dumped! Really pretty. BUT I didn't have a chance to go out with the camera until today. Wasn't quite as nice but did get some nice scenery shots. FINALLY!!

Nice to see so many folks joining in this month, can hardly wait for the B-Day packages to start their rounds!
Talk to ya all later!
Shirley!

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

I usually sow seeds indoors in February and March, but havent in a couple of years not having enough time with kids active lives. So have been reading all the threads on WS in the jugs. So I am giving it a try this year. I have about 12-15 jugs sitting out with more to do. I moved this summer so I now have a three season room that I have turned into a greenhouse of sorts. I have varies greens growing. I also had built two growing boxes that I read about on a greenhouse forum here. I have radishes, carrots, onions, and lettuce growing. I plan on starting a lot of my perennials under lights as well as the WS jugs and then my annuals soon after. If I have as much luck with the jugs as I have heard others having maybe I will switch to all jugs next year. I am ambitious I hope I actually get done as much as I hope to. It is exciting to see a little green this time of year.

Have a great Monday All!!

Welcome Kelli~

I'm still learning about how to make WS work here to simplify. I know it's hard to believe it's that easy... but it really is. I like it that it's not dependent on me for daily watering or lighting. Sprouts don't come earlier, but are stronger. If you already have lights set up you could compare your indoor seedlings with WS from the same seed packet esp. for perennials.

Last year I tried WS tomatoes just to see if I could because I didn't yet "trust WS", so still purchased plants. I planted 3 seeds in each 16 oz clear plastic cup from my stash I'd been saving. The WS toms sailed right through the icky spring weather & kept on growing, so I just added more soil to cover the leggy stems. The purchased seedlings were in totes carried in at night & out of the house after temps were 50 degrees that day or in & out of the car if too cool of a day until our cold wet spring weather was over. I'm convinced now, so this year I will WS all my tomatoes and my family is going to be thrilled to not have to babysit tomatoes (or peppers).

Lots of other veggies WS well in the milk jugs, but not root vegs, corn, peas, or beans. Beets if grown for greens do.

Heidi, what a great idea for a game! Although I have to say it looks difficult, at this point!

I wanted to share the pic of the Bald Eagle that is fishing the River Raisin in downtown Monroe. I got this on Monday, on my lunch hour. It was snowing, so the pic isn't that great, but it's a 90% improvement over last year's eagle pics! I was pleased!

One of the things that got me thinking about this is my grandmother's 90th birthday which is coming up soon. I have some fun cards!
Card 1 front Woman in her jogging suit, headband, sneakers. "I just got done with my 9-mile jog, I feel great and I'm going to tackle my chores."
Card 1 inside "Whew! What the hell was I doing? Who am I? Who are you and why are you looking at me?"

Card 2 front Top 10 Things to do as you Turn 90
Card 2 inside I'm not going to tell you. You can't remember 10 things at the same time anyway.

Smile and laugh! It's your birthday!

Heidi,
I will mail Kelli's party package on or before Feb. 15 because we're leaving for an extended weekend.

The game has me stumped. Do I ask if a letter fits like hangman or am I suppose to guess a birthday and famous person?

Please give another clue :o) Corrine

The first person to figure out the birthdates and the names win the prize. You don't get to ask for a letter. I'm drawing letters and numbers and adding them as I go! Here's a few more hints.

Hey Everybody!
Mandy, I got your email, and yes, that's my address!

Well, we didn't get the really nasty weather they were predicting but it sure was cold and windy! I sure hope Phil the Groundhog was right, I could use an early spring!

Heidi, it just occured to me that you picked the best month for a B-Day Bash for FOTESS - none of us have a birthday this month! Perfect time to celebrate them all!

I've got 3 of the word scrambles!
Have a great weekend, All!
Shirley!

Me either! Congratulations Melinda!
I worked on my birthday party in a box yesterday, but I started with one theme and then kind of got side-tracked by another. Once I find something that ties it altogether, I will be ready to send.

Congrats Melinda! I've been putting my party box together this weekend, and hopefully plan to have it out next weekend.

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

Well, my box is ready to go! I'm not sure I got any of the themes right but in a town of 2700 people hard to find what you really want! And didn't feel like going over an hour away to shop this week. But had fun doing it! I hope you like! I'll post dc# after get back from po. Hope all were safe from the storms last night! My heart goes out to all in the paths of those tornadoes!
Hope everyone has a great day! This has been a fun swap!
We used to have a swap questionnaire on one of the other swaps. I hope that I didn't send something you don't like Alana. I couldn't find the papers on it where people put their likes and dislkes.
Melinda
P. S. Not crazy about the changes here, but suppose I'll have to get used to them!

Be sure and leave feedback for the website. Tell them what you like and what isn't working well. If you're experiencing it...many are. If you contact them without them asking they REALLY hold it in high regard. They can ask all the survey groups in the world, but you are the real customer with real feedback. You'll also change your corner of the world and who knows who else is in your corner!

My package is here!! I am going to dinner so I will wait until I get back to open it so that I can take my time. It is wrapped in festive green and blue paper.

Happy Valentine's Day!

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

Having my package arrive on Valentine's Day was a sweet coincidence. I opened it last night when I got home from a real birthday celebration for my baby boy who turned 25 yesterday. He enjoys being a Valentine baby so I don't think he would pick another birth date either.

Melinda, you were very generous. I love my birthday treats!
Melinda combined my Blue and Green theme with my longing for a Tropical Paradise to good effect. The box was wrapped and lined in blue and green papers-so pretty and made me feel special. My party guests will enjoy the bright floral napkins, plates and cups. Tropical colors and tropical flowers abound on them, as well as on a wind sock that I will hang near the patio table so it can be seen while we eat cake. Blue "Ocean Breeze" scented oil and a green scented candle will help with ambiance. A pocket planner sporting palm trees will help me keep track after the party. My card had a pretty pink flamingo on the front, encouraging me to party till I can't stand on one leg. LOL, That won't take long.
A box of Hawaiian Punch drink mix will provide the base of my tropical drinks. A little frog on a hook will hang around to keep me focused. A pack of Freesia bulbs will contribute to the floral breezes and bright colors. Canna seeds, both from Journey's End and Dwarf Hybrids were my favorite parts of the box and will get sown this weekend. I hope I mentioned everything; this box was full of goodies.
Thank you so much Melinda! I am waiting for a sunny day when Allie is with me to have my party. I will try to remember to come back here and post a picture when we do.

Thanks so much,
Alana

Corrine, your bithday bash is on it's way. I mailed it this morning. DC #9500110258363046354919 the estimated delivery is Tues or Wed since Monday is a holiday. Hope you enjoy. It was fun to put together.

I, also, hadnt thought about WS my veggies, but I will definitely give it a try. I don't care for fresh tomatoes, but enjoy making all kinds of things with tomatoes. The rest of my family loves them off the vine so I have about 10 different varieties this year.

Hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day with your loved ones. My boyfriend gave me all the pieces to make a Fairy Garden in a wooden box. He and the kids helped me put it together last night.

Have a great day!!

I'm sure I'll enjoy it, Mandy! Don't ya just love getting a swap package?

It snowed here today, just enough to turn everything white again. Got a decent shot of the wind blowing the snow all over.

I'm really enjoying the first of 3 days off - it's nice to have days off again! I think I've said that before!

Have a nice weekend All!
Shirley!

 o
RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

My swap package arrived already today! That was fast delivery, although I guess it didn't have too far to go from Shirley to me.

In the package, I received a lot of things for a kitty party. The cats got two bags of party mix, and my dog got some treats too. For everyone else, there were cupcake papers and muffin mixes (blueberry cheesecake and wildberry - yum!)

The package included balloons and a pineapple cilantro candle, plus, a whole packet of cat games to play. Cat scramble, a "name that cat" game with lots of cool pictures of cats that I've never seen the name of, and a cat to the mouse maze. That was a very cool addition!

Thank you Shirley - and my kitties and puppy thank you too. And my hubby was excited about the muffins, so it was an all-around hit.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend... it snowed here last night and today - we ended up with around four or five inches of new snow, but I think that's all we're getting for a day or two. It looks pretty.

Kelli, your party girl package went out on Friday. After reading what others sent out I am not sure I did it right. I hope you have fun with the contents. I included some upcycled things as well. The candy was new! Thinking of Kelli being outnumbered I was sure to include girly things.

We're with friends at our parents' island home having a blast with 8 of us altogether. It's like a party, but there are only 2 of us ladies.

My friend and I shopped several of my favorite nurseries here for some markdown beauties we never see in the Seattle area. Plus Ace Hardware has 20% what you put in a bag, so we bought a few plants off our wish lists in quart containers, so not too high prices. They'll grow.

Mandy, wow, that was quick, just googled your town, which I thought was on the UP, well, no, it's only about an hour and a half from Monroe! DUH!

I get those treats for my cats, and I really can't tell if they are enjoying them or not. They are too busy inhaling and meowing for more all the same time! I'm not sure enjoyment is a factor!

Corrine, sounds like you're having a great weekend! Anytime you can get low cost plants is a good time! I don't buy very many plants anymore, since I started to wintersow, but I think I'm going to invest in some wild ginger plants this year, and another mini hosta for that bed. I keep an eye on several websites, waiting for the ginger to go on sale; it hasn't happened in 3 months, might have to bite the bullet and pay $4 a plant - EEEKKK!

I have one more day off! Wish this happened more often!
Have a great week, ALL!
Shirley!

Hi FOTESS friends,
Even though I'm not in the swap this month, I just had to share this with all of you.

I get emails several times a week from "EarthSky News," mainly because I like to star gaze and it alerts me to upcoming astrological events. But sometimes they throw in a little bit extra of something special. For those of you wishing for spring, I share this video "The Life of Flowers" (see the link below). I just loved it! It's time lapse photography of flowers blooming, and the music is wonderful, too.

Here is a link that might be useful: The Life of Flowers

Katie, that was beautiful! Loved the marigolds and the thistle! Thanks for sharing! And the Fuschia! People, you have to see how the Fuschia "blooms" in time to the music!

I'm going to finish my WSing at the beginning of March; that's how far behind I am! I have to prepare about 60 jugs and that's what's holding me up! Keep forgetting to recharge the drill!

Have a great week, ALL!!

Hello to the whole group. We've had some cooler weather and rain lately and a small bit of some kind of frozen precipitation. They say there is a name for it, but my husband can't remember what it's called - something akin to hail.
Dianne, I will try to mail out your package tomorrow. I had something in mind that I wanted to include and asked my husband to look for it when he went to the store, but he came home with the wrong thing. If I can't find it tomrorow, I will substitute something else and get your package mailed on its way to you.
This month of Happy Un-Birthdays will be so much fun!

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

We are supposed to get snow and we desperately need it and want it.
Went to my grandmother's 90th birthday. She still stacks wood, pulls weeds, cans fruit and veggies. She had more energy than the rest of us! What a woman!
We were good homeowners and took out the 100-year old dying cottonwood tree. Now we have to resculpt the front of the house/corner where the tree was. I dug up bulbs and flowers along 25' so that we could remove the sidewalk. That's what I did today. I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow. We took out the sidewalk because it was broken and because a new sidewalk needs to slope at an angle that is not too steep (unlike some of our crazy neighbors and their ways). It was a beautiful day to work outside.
Don't you love those projects that snowball into a major series of events? Will be glad when this is done.
Sounds like you're all enjoying your birthdays!

Well, the next time Tabitha and Myrna come to visit, we are certainly going to have a great time at the "paperdoll party" I just got in the mail today, from Mandy!

Mandy, what a great party! I got pink napkins, a pretty pink tablecloth, silver and white plates and cups, a package of B-day confetti, and a pack of party invitations, with one of the paperdolls on the front!

Mandy also sent a friends banner, a happy B-day banner that she made, complete with pink ribbon, an "un-birthday" bar of homemade soap, and a pink candle and holder with a paperdoll "wrap" for around the holder. She made the wrap herself, how did you cut these? They are in a circle, can't describe it, but we used to do this when I was a kid.

She also sent a beautiful birthday card and "seeds to celebrate": Babydoll mixed colors dianthus, Dancing Petticoats cosmos, Rocket Larkspurs (YAY!!), a cut flower mix and Basil Crayon Pot, have never heard of these but look forward to planting them!

And last but not least--Paperdolls! I've loved paperdolls since I was VERY young, and have a large collection of them, that, yes, I still play with, when the mood is right! Mandy sent 5 sets, and I think she got them all online. There is a Shirley Temple doll, some old fashioned dolls AND Betsy McCall!! My grandmother used to cut these out of a magazine and send to me! Haven't seen any in ages! What a great surprise!

Mandy, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Shirley!

Well, I will try this again! Had it all typed out this am and when I hit the preview message, it went to webage has been cancelled! Urggghhhh !
I loved the birthday box I got from Alana. She combined butterflies and pink things and did a great job! I got everything in a beautiful bag with tulips and butterflies on it! Then I got napkins, paper plates, cups, and a birthday banner with butterflies and flowers and pink on them! I also got pink balloons, pink krepp streamer and blowouts with butterflies on them to match the plates, etc. I also got a butterfly solar accent light. And pink garden vinyl gloves. A beautiful notecard set with flowers and butterfly on them. A wonderful Dove chocolate almond bar. And a huge bar of lemon verbena bath soap which I loved! Already taken 2 showers with it! And last , but not least, I rec'd seeds that are pink and butterflies love also! Echium vulgare pink bedder, pink hawkweed, rose bicolor butterfly orchids and cosmos pink popsock! Love, love them! As my birthday was the 15 th of this month and my baby sisters was in the end of January, we are getting together on the 23rd ( if no ice by then) or the next weekend. We will celebrate our days together and have a wonderful party thanks to Alana! Will be so nice to decorate as haven't been able to see each other to exchange gifts or visit until then! Thanks also to Heidi for doing this fun swap for all of us!

RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

It sounds like everyone got a great package so far!

It's snowing like crazy here the last couple of days - I think we've gotten another 8 inches of snow roughly. It is a "Winter Wonderland" here in my part of Michigan - mostly due to the lake.

Mandy, here in SE Michigan we aren't getting much snow - high winds tho. And VERY cold! I think I'd almost have the snow!

There have been some really nice B-day Bashes sent out, everyone here is so creative!

Just a heads up - I am the hostess for March and I'll post the new FOTESS swap on the first weekend in March, March 1st or 2nd.

And before I forget: a great big THANK YOU to Heidi for hosting this month. It turned out to be a really hectic month for me, so I really appreciate her volunteering and taking it on!

GOOD JOB, Heidi!!

Oh yeah, you don't have school buses? Tell me about that!

Have a great evening,
Shirley!

 o
RE: new: fotess birthday bash swap

Our school was always proud of the fact they didn't run buses and they never closed school. We are in the middle of Nebraska, town of 4000 (that's a medium-sized town). There were country elementary schools in every direction. They were all grouped under the same umbrella with Cozad's school. In the last 3 years the powers that be closed all of those country schools and now they run 2 or 3 buses, but nothing like the other schools around us. Many of the elementary-aged kids are driven to school by parents. Since buses have not run before...most don't think anything of driving their kids in every morning. Kids can drive to school with a School Permit at age 14 so most of them do. After all, most of them are driving a tractor at an even younger age.

I just found out a dear friend of mine was killed by her boyfriend who then shot himself. She was 50 and leaves 4 grown boys and 4 grandsons. She was an elementary music teacher in Texas and had faith that moved mountains. She was so bubbly and encouraging even in her darkest times. Enjoy your birthday and every day. The good news is that she's in heaven organizing the angels into the best choir you've ever heard and in between holy songs they're doing the macarena and laughing!

This has been a great theme this month and what wonderful creative packages are being sent! Does anyone else have this issue? When I type my message on GardenWeb, it has a long, long delay before any of the words appear in the box. So weird!
Heidi, I am so sorry to hear about your friend. Wouldn't the world be wonderful if we could make all the violence go away?
Dianne, our weather sounds like yours - we are having rain, rain, rain. I'll be glad to see it end. My silly new horse has dry places to stand, but she stands out in the rain. I hope that's not a sign of her intelligence level.
Have a good weekend, eveyone.

Thank you Corrine, My girly birthday package was lots of fun. It had a lot of items that it felt like it was never ending. I received a cute card, some candy, birthday cupcake pillow case, hair wrap and scrapbook decorations. This was tons of fun to open. Sorry I am late, I did receive it on Thursday, but I started a new job this week and just haven't had time to sit down.
Thanks again.

There are all kinds of goodies: cookies, popcorn, candy, Kool-Aid, etc. and party games, balloons, St. Patrick's Day party items, and some flower seeds. Thanks so much for everything, Dianne. You throw a great party!

Yes, we can see your picture! Did you get one of those new St. Patrick's day shirts that says, "Kiss Me and I'll be Lucky!"
These are so fun to see and hear about.
Is anyone else wondering what someone is cooking up for March? My top guesses would be:
1. In like a lamb, out like a lion (that's a saying about March's weather)
2. Lucky, Lucky, Lucky-I'm not Irish and I don't wear green!
3. March On!! Wedding March, Marching Band, March Hare

Guess I'll have to wait!
Heidi

I realize I still didn't get a picture about my amazingly pink birthday bash from Kelli, so I'll just describe all the PINK she sent me.

pink card that said: Can I see some ID miss? May all your birthday wishes come true. **One wish might coming true before summer. Will share later.

pink cupcake decorated bag perfect for hauling a few essentials with me out to the garden come summer time. Bug repellant, gum, candy, tissues, telephone, MP3 player, water bottle, etc. Yeah, once the sun comes out around the 4th of July I sleep in the house, but live in the garden.

So many magenta & pink things to brighten my day: twenty plastic treat bags (will pack up for picnics of my favorite snacks), twelve 12 inch balloons, six bubble containers, 3 dizzy danglers with stars at the end (useful to keep the deer out of our strawberries)

plus seeds:
rose campion, magenta
edible pink poppies __ Kelli, is it the seeds that are edible?
pink butterflies __ what flower is this?

So excited each time I pull out these bag of pink fun!

Thank you Kelli~~

Good Morning All!

Just wanted to remind everyone that I'll be posting the new FOTESS swap over the weekend, be on the alert, folks!

It's snowing here again today and this time it looks like we'll get some significant accumulation! Depending on your point of view, this could be a good thing!

Have a great Thursday,
Shirley!

I forgot to add that Kelli also sent a package of peas & carrots Jelly Bellys. I had no idea they made them. It says it's mellocreme candy orange sherbet carrots & green apple peas. Yummy.

Looks like you all had fun. I am sorry I could not join in. I was hosting a swap this month and it was all I could do. I am looking forward to joining the March swap.

Shirley, did you get any good snowfall? Nothing here for a long time other than a little ice and dusting last week.

Hope everyone has a good weekend and I will be watching for the new swap post.

Margo

Margo, nice to hear from ya! No really significant snowfall; it will look like we are going to get 12 inches and then quit after a quarter of an inch! It's snowing right now. I guess we got about 4 inches last weekend, but I was down in Kettering, where it was in the high 40s!

Okay, here's the deal: I am going to post the March AND April FOTESS swap, just not sure when! I've got several projects that need finishing, so the new swap might not get posted unitl tomorrow night, or maybe tonight - AGGGHHH, how did I get this busy!?

Heidi, has everyone sent and received for this swap?
Just in case I didn't mention it before, Heidi, thank you so much for being hostess this month! It was a great idea that everyone enjoyed! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Gotta get these projects done, would be nice to clear my dining room table!
Shirley!

Now we are officially complete. I received my box from Robin today--the beautiful butterfly theme. As you can see there are matching plates and napkins, candles, 4 kinds of confetti/table decorations (wow), bag of balloons, chocolate chip cookie mix, two plastic champagne glasses (oh, what fun!) and it all came neatly packed in a purple bag I can use for many different things. Oh, and a birthday card with a butterfly, too! Thank you so much. I love it. I love the teal color with the butterflies--yippy skippy!
When the box got here it looked like a large mailman had jumped on one corner. I noticed the box was circled in duct tape. Did you do that, or did the USPS after they used it for a hockey puck? Everything was in good shape, not a mark on anything inside. I just found it amusing! USPS-can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em!
Okay Shirley, we're ramping up for the new Fotess theme as soon as you find your dining room table again. Until then, pretend you're in college and eat over the sink!
I had fun doing this and I'm glad you all had fun, too!
Heidi

Looks like you're going to have a great party, Heidi, what a nice package!

I remember Chris eating over the sink, in high school, trying to finish before the bus got there!

Well, looks like the new swap will be posted tomorrow - finished 1 project, the easy one, have two to complete, but one of them is probably going to go UNDER the dining room table and put on hold for a while. Finishing the St. Patrick's day cards has priority right now!

See ya all tomorrow!
Shirley!

Yeah Heidi ~~~ Thanks for hosting this fun swap this month. You got us all started on a creative roll & the packages were awesome. Thanks again, Heidi!

Spring is ramping up quickly here in WA, so I am going to be a lurker and probably not play for awhile. Any day it is milder & not too rainy I'm outside if at all possible before I work in the late afternoon. If I get ahead now it pays off all summer long not only in our gardens, but especially in the high visibility camp gardens that have a huge weed bank. Our mulching works as long as no one else digs in there. A water leak last month led to a backhoe digging & you can imagine that mess with our rocky soil. The mostly fist or bigger sized rocks are now back on top. I'm thinking I'm going to just let a groundcover spread over them after I meander them a bit. I had made a nice stack & edging for the bike parking...

At home hubby mowed the lawn Sunday afternoon, so now it's an even bright green. Our son has taken advantage of the dry afternoons working on blowing the driveway of fir needles & cedar debris. That reduces the muddy gravel a lot if we can keep up. I went to a plant swap on Saturday & stuffed the Suburban with lots of plants for camp. Most exciting was the hen & chicks for my hubby's topiary project he saw in a library book I checked out for him. See, gardening is c-a-t-c-h-i-n-g. We have lots of moss for stuffing the wire frame!

The native Indian plum is about to bloom. Once I smell that fragrance it's officially spring for me here & the race is on!

Happy almost Spring,
Corrine
