UPDATE: I/E Seed Clean Out Swap -- Going Once, Going Twice

pawneepapa

This posting is limited to current participants of Incredible Edible's 4th Annual Seed Clean Out Swap. If you didn't send in seed please don't ask.

Below is a list of the seed that I was unable to match to the "Wants" list you sent with your seeds. Look it over and let me know what seed you're interested in. I will divvy the seed on a first come, first served basis and I will update this list as needed (and time permits) over the next three days. Whatever seed is leftover on Tuesday will be donated to the KC Community Gardens. Given our goals of (1) cleaning out our seed boxes and (2) donating seed to a worthy cause, please don't claim more seed packets than the number you sent in.

If you see a specific variety here that you listed on your Wants list, chances are it is already in your return envelope. Please post your picks here so everyone can see what seeds have been claimed (for the Canadians in this swap, send me your picks via email and I will insert them).

Sorry to complicate things, but I just got a surprise pack of garlic chives in the mail today. Is there a chance to take that off my list and add instead

    Squash Summer, Yellow Straightneck

Also, being in Minnesota, I won't be needing to start any of the seeds in a hurry. Feel free to send out to more southern people first. If the stamps aren't all needed, keep them.

I made your change to summer squash.

I hope to mail all the packages out by Friday.

The sooner the better; it was so nice here today, I couldn't resist the urge to plant some seeds. Probably was foolish but I put them in a raised bed and covered it with a low tunnel. Maybe it will work.

I just noticed Castor Beans on the list. Please make sure to write on each packet that these are NOT EDIBLE! The first time I got these seeds in a trade, it didn't say that on the packet and I didn't know they were poisonous. Thank goodness I Google all my seeds before planting. Castor bean plants make awesome decorative annuals though!

OT - who sent in the Druzba tomato seed? I'm trying them this year - just wondering how they turned out for the sender.

Sorry to throw off the thread.

  • booberry85
    last modified: 9 years ago

October17, I'm not sure if I was the one who sent them in. I have grown Druzba in the past and was really not impressed with them. The plants were small plants and not very productive. It was very disappointing for me. I had read nothing but good things about them.

It could have been me. I've had soil issues the past few years. So the next two years I'll be working on my soil and not growing any nightshades.

  • NancyPlants
    last modified: 9 years ago

It might have been my seed. I sent in 10 packets of that variety.
Last year was my first time to grow Druzba. I grew 30 new-to-me varieties. Druzba was one of my top 3 favorites. This is what I wrote about it:
    nice fruits with no blemishes/cracking
    nicely acidic-great flavor
dense foliage and no disease problems

As with many gardeners, last year was not my best tomato harvest. Even with the weather challenges, Druzba was at the top of my list.

Everyones taste in tomatoes is a bit different and growing conditions will of course play a big part.
I hope you have good luck with them and enjoy a bountiful harvest :)

OK, I finished the final sort last night and got the packages already to mail. I will stop by the post office today. I had to scramble some of the postage, so don't be surprised if your package doesn't arrive with the same postage you sent in. Those who sent in way too much postage will get some back.

There are approximately 450 packets of seed to donate to KC Community Gardens. That total includes seed older than 2009, seed without IDs (e.g. "lettuce"), unclaimed seed, and seed donated by two local gardeners who wanted to join the fun after I mentioned the swap.

Thank you for your generosity, I am sure that it will be appreciated. And I hope that you'll enjoy and be able to use the seed that arrives in your mailbox.

    Daryl,
Got the seeds this week, what a pleasant surprise! I had almost forgotten about this swap. Thanks for all your work the last few months. This was a very rewarding swap, I love that the extra seeds are going to a neat community garden.

    Thanks again!

Today I delivered our donated seeds to KC Community Gardens. The director was very appreciative and I am confident they will be put to good use. A big thank you to everyone who participated in the swap. You made it a success. Thanks.

I meant to reply sooner, but have been away. Pawneepapa, you made it it a success! We just helped a little.

I was wowed by the variety I received in the pack. I can't wait to get planting. This certainly helped stave off the winter doldrums. It's good to know the extras will be used and are appreciated.

Thanks to all for making my first seed swap experience wonderful. I'll be participating again!
