NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Bowl Shot 10-2-12

It's that time again!!! Welcome to the 4th Annual Incredible Edibles Pick-A-Peck of Peppers seed swap!

So here are the rules (every swap's gotta have them):

* No deadline on signing up, but ALL seeds must reach me no later than February 8th. I will do my very best to have them back out by February 15th. That's almost three weeks earlier than last year!

* Seed packets should be labeled as commercial, or harvested/hand collected.

* Seed packets should have minimum 12 - 15 seeds per packet.

* Limit of packets per variety = 3. If you send in more than 3 of a variety, the rest will be considered extras.
This will increase the variety in the swap. More variety sent in = more variety received back : ) If you have something very rare, or in high demand, contact me privately, and I may wave the 3 pack limit for that item.

*** This being my fourth year to host, I am still tweaking the rules a bit. Due to having way too many of certain varieties in the past, I've created a list of peppers that will NOT be accepted in this swap. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them, but they are very common varieties, that are available at any Walmart or Lowe's, so therefore, not on anyone's wishlist. If you send these in, I will return them to you.

Jalapenos
Cayennes
Habaneros
Cherry Peppers
Big Jim
Sweet Banana
Corno di Toro
Hungarian Wax
Hot Lemon/Lemon Drop
California Wonder, or any Unnamed Bell Peppers (very few people had Bells on their wishlists at all)
Seed Mixes of any kind

If you have a rare, named variety of one of the items on this list, email me, and I may make an exception.

*** NEWBIE RULE. Anyone just getting started is welcome to join the swap, just post that you are new to growing peppers and only have common seeds to share. Newbies will just send in the bubble mailer, with a return address label, and plenty of stamps and little seed baggies, along with a wishlist, but NO SEEDS. Between donations and my own stash, you should get a nice variety back.

* Limit of total packs = 40. I've lowered it from 50. In previous years I had a couple of folks send in 50 different varieties. Do you know how hard it was to come up with 50 varieties OTHER than the ones they sent in?

* Please put your GW name on the seed packet. This will ensure that you don't receive your own seeds back.

* Include a list of what you are sending in. This will also ensure that you don't receive the same thing you sent in.

* Please include a wishlist, or at least me know if you prefer Sweet/Mild, Hot, Superhot, or a Mix, so that I can send you things you will enjoy, even if I don't have items specifically from your wishlist. You may also indicate if you prefer OP/Heirloom types, or Hybrids. I can't guarantee what you will get back, since it is dependent on what others send in, but I will do my best.

* Commercial seeds should have an expiration date of '12 or '13. If hand collected, they should have been harvested in '11 or '12. Please put this information on the seed packet.

* Canadian GW members are welcome to join, as long as their seeds reach me by the deadline. Be aware that it can take up to two weeks, since the envelope has to make it through customs. Canadians are unable to post on the Round Robin forum, so you will need to email me to sign up.

* And last but not least, please include a return address label, and enough postage, for the return trip. If you are sending cash, please send in at least as much as it cost to get the envelope to me. Also, if you want me to send your package with a delivery confirmation, you need to send enough $ to cover it.

* I will email you privately with my mailing address once you have posted here to sign up for this swap. You must make sure that your GardenWeb profile has your email address listed, and it's visible to other members, so I can contact you.

I apologize if that sounds like a lot of rules, but this will keep the swap fair and fun for everyone.

Let me know if I've forgotten anything.

Your hostess,
Bonnie

Here is the list from this forum:

Socalgardengal

I have emailed everyone my mailing address, so if you didn't receive it let me know.

It's great to see some familiar names, and exciting to make some new friends too!

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Would love to join please. I'm new and was curious how much postage should I send you for the return seeds? or how many stamps usually? Thanks so much for hosting Bonnie! I am so excited to start growing!

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Hi amiahjordan0! I am unable to email you my mailing address, since you do not have it listed on your profile page. If you will email me, I can send that to you.

The postage issue is always a tricky one. I can mail a small bubble envelope here in town and they charge me $1.95 or the equivalent of 5 stamps, but if I go to the next town over, they will charge $1.30 or sometimes less than that, for the same sized envelope. To make matters worse, my post office will sometimes deliver envelopes that were metered in other towns, as postage due, even though the post office where it was shipped from determined it to be the correct amount of postage. I have battled back and forth with them every year, but haven't made much progress.

Soooo that being said, I would err on the side of caution and include 5 stamps. If it ends up being less, I can return them to you if you'd like.

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Hi! I would love to join, we love peppers around here. I'm very new to gardening and also to seed saving so I don't know that I would have much to contribute. I have a few rarer varieties from a commercial source but they are from 2011 which is beyond your cutoff. And the only seeds I saved myself from what I planted last year were common varieties (serrano and cayenne), so that also doesn't help.

If it's still possible for me to participate please let me know! And if not, I won't be offended. Thanks for considering.

Kathy

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

I am very excited to see so many people interested in growing peppers, and hope to be able to accommodate all that would like to participate. However, the number of newbies that I can send seeds too is dependent upon how many donations, and extras are sent in. It may be that I have to set a Newbie limit, but I don't want to discourage anyone just yet. So those of you that are new to growing peppers, and do not have seeds to share, please continue to sign up, but just be aware that I may have to issue a cut off at some point.

Thank you for your understanding!

Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,

I am a newbie! I would love some pepper seeds.

Thanks,

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

I would like to join, I am a newbie too, but may have some common pepper seeds to share. I only do square foot gardening so I don't require very many seeds it would just be neat to have something a bit different then I could learn to save seeds and have more to share next year.

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

I'd like to be in on this again this year. I'll see if I might be able to scrounge up a little seed for extras, too.

Thanks for hosting again, Bonnie.

Glad to see this swap come up. I'd like to join. It is fun to share favorite varieties and interesting to try new ones from other people.

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Okay, here is what I'm going to do. I am creating two separate lists. One for people that have seeds to share, and a newbie list. For the newbies that I have already sent my address information, go ahead and mail the things on the list I sent you. I should have enough from my own inventory to cover you. For all other newbies, once I get some donations in, I will figure out how many more newbies I can accommodate. I'm trying my best to be fair, so I'm handling it on a first come, first served basis.

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

You had a list of peppers not allowed because they were common. What about peppers like poblano, and serrano which are common also? I do have some others so I'm still in.

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Yeah, Kevinitis, I get quite a few of those two too, but it's not quite as bad as the other items on the list. I tried to stick with the worst offenders, LOL. Personally, my basic rule of thumb is, if I can find the seeds at Walmart, everyone else can too, and probably already has that one.

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

hope i'm not too late! I'm new to peppers too so am a newbie...would love to join if there is enough to cover me...thanks, Dianne

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Love to join.
I am new at growing any vegetable but I like to start my garden of vegetables this year. Unfortunately I have no seeds to share but will pay for handling.

Kindly email me and advise how much for postage and I will send it along with the baggies.

Thank you for the opportunity.

PS I love peppers and will love to have regular, sweet, mild but no HOT Peppers lol! They don't agree with me.

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

I have my seeds ready to send I just need an address. Some common a few good ones. Even though I am a newbie I had a few, I thought you could use the common for the newbies :)

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Good Morning!

Starting to receive some envelopes now. Still waiting on a couple of donations to arrive, so if you are on the newbie list, and haven't received my address, just be patient.

Look what I came home to on Friday evening!

Photobucket

First sprout of the season, Condor's Beak, a purple habanero type pepper. Here's what it looked like last night.

Condor's Beak sprout 1-12-13

Anyone else have anything sown, or sprouted yet?

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Bonnie - I like that sprout. I haven't sown any peppers yet, have been busy wintersowing my perennials. However, I do have my peppers sorted through and ready to begin sowing them this week. It's about the biggest list thus far, might have to add to my grow room and to my outdoor growing areas.........

I've got my seeds ready to send for the swap, but still working on packaging up for the newbies...... I don't get off work early enough to get to PO during the week so will be mailing next Saturday. I sent you an email last week, let me know if you have any requests per my email.

Sandy

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

*** REMINDER FOR THE NEWBIES

Even though you aren't sending in any seeds, please use a bubble envelope. The equipment the post office sends the envelopes through can crush pepper seeds. I'm sorry but I am unable to provide the bubble envelopes for all of the swap participants.

Thank you!

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Seeds sent, included bubble envelope!

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Just to clarify. You don't need to send an envelope within an envelope. I will simply reuse the bubble envelope you send the seeds to me in.

Thanks!

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Hi Bonnie,

I have another variety question. I have some Chocolate Habanero and Mustard Habanero seeds. Is that something you would be interested in having me include, or are those too common like the regular habaneros?

Thanks!
Julia

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Hi Julia! They are fairly common, but not as bad as the regular orange ones. I think I gave one person the okay to send those varieties in, but can't seem to locate the email at the moment.

My email inbox is out of control at the moment, and the free service I use is horrible. The ads cover up the emails where I can't even check half of them. I've create another account somewhere else, but didn't want to confuse things in the middle of the swap, so I'm just trying to deal with it for a few more weeks.

Anyway, how about a one pack limit on them. Maybe that would keep it in check.

BTW, I've edit yesterday's post to reflect the packages received today.

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Okay, I've changed the email address listed in my GW account, so hopefully that will solve the email issues I've been having. If you have sent me one in the past few days, and I haven't answered you, please resend, and it should go to my new address.

Thank you so much for your patience!

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Good Day Bonnie - Two Bubble Envy's will be departing my PO and heading west to Colorado later today. My postmaster said that they should be on tonights truck to the States PO hub at the Int'l airport and on a plane heading west sometime Sunday!! Sure beats pony express!!

I'll shoot you an email later with what's in each of the two envies. There's a bit of extra cash in my return envy, so please use it to cover any postage shortage...

Thanks again for all your hard work in organizing such a great swap!

Sandy

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Awesome, Sandy! Can't wait to see what all you sent in this year!

So far, you guys are doing all the work! My work starts once the envelopes arrive! I do have a spreadsheet already set up, and have been entering the data in as I receive each package, but it's too early yet to do much sorting.

Haven't checked the mail yet today, but if I receive any envelopes, I'll just edit the list I posted yesterday.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

MariaTR, I resent the email. Let me know if it goes through this time.

Thanks guys! Sorry for any confusion.

I did receive a couple of envelopes, but it's almost midnight, and I just got home from taking the kids to the X Games, so I'll go through them tomorrow.

Goodnight,
Bonnie

Okay, I still haven't gone through yesterday's mail yet. I promise to do it tomorrow. My daughter had her first playdate today, so I was busy painting fingernails, and making tea party snacks, etc. Sometimes my gardening hobby just has to take 2nd place to being a mom : )

Please put your GardenWeb name somewhere either on the envelope, or on your wishlist. There are participants with the same first name in the swap. Please be nice to your host : )

I received a package from a Kevin L. Is that you Kevinitis?

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Yep that was me, Kevin L.. I did not have much to trade, I have many more tomato varieties than peppers. I thought I had more chimyo seeds but it turns out I only had a handful left.

 o

I'm just getting back into gardening after a long absence so I guess my lack of a seed collection makes me a newbie. I would love to participate in your seed exchange if it isn't too late!

Only received 1 envelope today. There is just one envelope from this forum and three from the other site that haven't arrived yet. The rest are newbies, and I don't really have to wait on them, since they won't have any seeds in them anyway.

I have a fairly busy schedule this weekend, so I may not make a lot of progress on sorting until Monday, but I will hit it hard then.

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Okay, I thought I would give a little update, so everyone would know how things are coming along.

2013 Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap photo 2013Pick-A-PeckofPeppersSwap_zps4e968749.jpg

I have received all the seed packages. There are a couple of newbie envelopes still out, but I am busy sorting (on a spreadsheet). Some lists are already complete, and just need to be physically sorted and packaged up. Those participants whose packages had the maximum amount of packets inside, will take a little longer, since it's harder to find things that you don't already have. I had hoped to have everything mailed back out by the end of the week, but I can see now that wasn't realistic. I didn't take into account Valentine's Day, and my two little ones have class parties that I have to prepare for and attend.

What I will probably do is send the envelopes back out in small batches. As I have envelopes ready, I will post a list of whose went out.

Oh, and I did place a couple of small seed orders for some frequently requested items, so there are a few envelopes that I won't be able to complete until the orders get here, which should be by the end of the week.

So just know that I haven't fled the country with your seeds, LOL! And I am chipping away at the sorting every chance I get.

I appreciate everyone's patience, and hope it will be worth the wait!

Your hostess,
Bonnie

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Mailed out four packages, two to GW participants, and two to folks on the other website.

Now that I've got everything organized, things should move faster. The first couple of envelopes always seem to take the longest. I'll have more ready to go out in the morning, and will post the names once they are on the way.

Please post on the swap thread to let me know that when your package arrives.

Here are the ones that went out today:

Sandysgardens - Mailed
Julia42 - Mailed

Maria, I emailed you the information on Friday, January 25th through GardenWeb, and resent it again on January 27th. I will send this one directly rather than go through GardenWeb.. Please let me know right away this time, if you don't receive it.

Thanks,

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Greetings Bonnie -

Knowing that an envy of pepper seed packets is on it's way makes this chilly winter morning a GOOD morning. I'm excited to be a part of this GREAT Swap and I know I'm going to enjoy growing peppers from seeds that so many people have graciously shared.

Hmmm - I wonder how fast that big bird in the sky can fly to get me them seeds!

Thanks again Bonnie for hosting and I'll let you know when the seeds get here.

Sandy

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Sandy, you are a BIG part of making this a GREAT swap this year!!! Lots of folks will be benefiting from your generosity. So, thank you very much, and I hope you will be pleased with what you receive back!

Sent one envelope out today, but it was for the other website. I have one ready to mail in the morning, and hope to get a couple more done tonight. However, my oldest son starts high school next year, and I have to take him to registration tonight, so not sure how long that will take, or how much time I'll have to work on the swap afterwards.

Lorabell/Laura - Ready to mail

UPDATE:

Well, I managed to get one more packaged done this evening, and the lucky person is ...

Naturegirl2007 - Ready to mail

I'll stop by the post office on my way to work and get those in the mail. I am off on Friday, so I should be able to knock quite a few out then.

RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

I've gotten three more packages done this afternoon, and am hoping to keep working on the swap this evening. My oldest son had a youth group event to go to tonight, but this time the hubby is taking him instead of me. Anyone else find that their kids schedules are way busier than ours were at their age? Not sure which one is more exhausting, the whole diapers/up-half-the-night stage, or the activities director/taxi driver stage of parenthood!!!

Okay, back to the swap.

Maple_grove - Ready to mail
Peppermeister1 - Ready to mail
Pinkiris - Ready to mail

I'll update this post before going to the post office in the morning.

Have a great evening!

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Just don't stay up half the night changing pepper seed packs!

Waiting a few more days won't kill me.

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Bonnie - I received the BEST PEPPER envelope ever in the mail on Thursday and I'm now in BIG trouble with myself. You completely out-did yourself with my envy, causing me to have to start a LOT more peppers this weekend on top of what I've already started. I guess I don't have to start more, but I sure want to and most likely will; and I'll have a good supply to get me going next season!

A BIG thanks to everyone who sent seeds in and a BIG thanks to Bonnie for putting this all together.

Sandy

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Sandy, glad to hear that your package has arrived, and that you are pleased with what you received back! It's a big relief to see that first package complete the circle. Of course, it will be an even bigger relief when the final package reaches it's destination!

Okay, headed to the post office. In addition to the three listed above, I also have:

Spacetogrow - Ready to mail
Suburbangreen - Ready to mail

Plus, a couple of envelopes for participants from the other website.

I'll work on some more later, but my brain hurts, LOL, and I need a small break.

Have a great day!

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Hi Bonnie - I got my seeds today! What a great selection - I can't believe how many items on my wish list you filled! And now I get to sit and do some fun research to learn about all the other varieties too! I have a feeling I'm going to be looking for a lot of new pepper spots in my yard this year.

Thanks so much for hosting such a great swap! I can't wait to get some of these going...

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

You're very welcome, Jullia! I am so glad that you are pleased with what you received back!

I worked on the swap all afternoon, and only have 5 packages ready to mail. Grrrr!!! The good news is that was the last of the big envelopes, folks that sent in close to the maximum. The rest of them only have a dozen or less packets to swap, so they shouldn't take as much time. Plus, they are already swapped on the spreadsheet, so I am hoping it will move pretty quickly from here on out.

Missed the post office hours for today, so the following will go out first thing Monday:

Tinley244 - Ready to mail
Coolbythecoast - Ready to mail
Fanatic79 - Ready to mail
Barefootgardner12 - Ready to mail

Plus one for the other site.

Need to make a grocery run tomorrow before I have a mutiny on my hands, LOL, but if I get a chance to do any envelopes I'll update the list..

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Fantastic selection of seeds in the package I received today. Thanks everyone and thanks to highalttransplant for making it all work. I couldn't even begin to imagine making the spreadsheet you enclosed with mine! It is going to be especially fun to grow some varieties that I'll associate with names I've seen here through the years. And many will proudly be grown in our front yard. I'll be replacing the annual flower planting with ornamental peppers!

 o
RE: NEW: 4th Annual I.E. Pick-A-Peck of Peppers Swap

Naturegirl, glad you received your package and are happy with the selection! I'd love to see a picture of your ornamental pepper bed later in the season!!!

Life has been extremely hectic for my family the past couple of weeks, so I really appreciate everyone's patience with me. This is the first year since I started hosting this swap, that I was also working, so I should have allowed more time between when the seeds arrived and when I promised to have them back out. I am doing my very best, and have quite a few ready to go out in the morning. There are a couple more that I'd like to finish tonight, but I still have to finish cooking dinner and get the kids bathed, so not sure if I can get to them or not.

Here is the list of the packages going out in tomorrow's mail:

Keltickreek
Churnoble
Skyblue52
Davina3315
Toucan
Amiahjordan
Chefconnie
Plus a couple from the other forum.

I'll update this post later if I get any more done. Please be sure to let me know when your package arrives.

Thanks!
Bonnie

UPDATE:

Got two more ready to go:
Scorpion John
LeafEricson

That is pretty much the last of the participants that sent seeds in. The rest is newbies.

Won't have time to work on those tomorrow, but will try to wrap them up by the end of the week.
