'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Are any of you quilters as well as gardeners?
I have been wanting to do a quilt a "spring garden" for years. The idea started off as a table topper but has grown. LOL What else could a gardeners idea do?
Anyway, last night I got the idea of trading blocks like we do with the plants and making the quilt even more like the garden.
Anybody interested? I'd go with either 9 1/2 inch or 12 inch blocks and the only pattern/color requirement would be that it have either green or brown somewhere.
If there is intrest, I'll post specifics and get started.
Please let me know what you think.

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I would love to do this, but only if it doesn't take up too much of my gardening time. When the nice weather comes I am out in the yard on weekends.

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I thought I would mention this for any quilters (and yes, several gardeners are also quilters) - there is a part of GardenWeb that is for quilters! I was totally surprised when I found it. I did not find it for more than a year (maybe more than 2 years) after I started trading plants and seeds here on the gardening side. You look under the tab for the "Home" Forum and then look down at the choices and will see one for Quilting. Click on that and you will see all sorts of quilt related swaps and sharing of ideas.

Beth, I hope you don't think that I am trying to sidetrack your idea. That is not it at all. I think it's a great one and I hope you get a group to share garden squares. (Please don't stick me with a pin! LOL)

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

OH NO! Something else to get hooked on!!! I've been avoiding Farmville because I was skeered that I'd get hooked on that. LOL
OK Jeanne, I'm going to check this out too. Maybe I'll be sticking us both with pins but thanks for the heads up. I definately want to see what's going on over there.
Ellie, I sure understand about spending 'too much time". I was thinking of swappin just one block with each trader. And, I plan to use either split rail or log cabin. Both are quick and easy and the nice straight lines remind me of the garden in my dreams.

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

hello
I would like to do a garden themed quilt block swap.
I have lots of great flower, wildbird and butterfly fabric.
maybe we could put in a few packs of seeds with our blocks hint hint?
I'm doing the fat quarter swap over on the quilting site

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Hey there Michelle, I like adding the seeds. I'm finally getting a half way decent collection again.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

okay, I"m very much a beginner quilter (so wet behind the ears that I could use a squeegee). Is this for a beginner quilter? Would this be by machine or by hand?...inquiring minds would like to know...LOL!!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I'd be interested in a swap like this, Beth! It sounds like fun. :o)

Jeanne is right- go over & check out the quilt side of GW. It's a lot of fun & full of helpful people. I've gotten lots of ideas & tips since I found it.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

This is getting exciting!
Ellie, Michelle, Linda and Melissa makes four if they all decide to do this. That is a great start.
Bunny, you amaze me. How do you find time????
Linda, I'd say it's definately a beginner type project and you can find easy directions for Split Rail or Log Cabin by Googling Beginner quilt blocks.
Split rail was the project for the first class I took but I really like it. It's easy and versatile.
I'd like at least 6 players but it is looking like this will be a "GO"
If you sign up and have a preference for the size block please let me know Also, do you want to just swap with me or with other players too? That will determine how many blocks you need to make.
AND, Yes, lets include a few packs of seeds in with the blocks.

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth! Count me in on this one! I like this idea, and had no idea that GW had a quilting section. I'm gonna have to check that out...
As for the voting, I'm up for either size block, but would prefer the 12" size. Also, would it have to be a specific pattern? I think it would be a lot of fun to open up the patterns and then see what everyone sends. But, that's just me. And lastly, I'm up for sending to various people.
Just let me know what I have to do, and who I have to send to...lol! Here we go, enabling ANOTHER addiction!!! LOL!

Peace.
-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

maybe we could open up the patterns...we could call it "Gardening Friends Quilt". What do you think Beth? Next question..(being a newbie at this, I'll have alot)when we make our blocks, does this include the backing and stuffing stuff inside? Or are we just sending the actual quilting square? Also I think that if we do one for each person it would be awesome! It might fit in a large bubble envie..."pondering"..this is exciting!!!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

HI Dan, happy to have you join in.
Now to try to answer your questions. Size is OK with me either way but I will return the same size that the other person sends. I'm using 12" for the project but I'll just add a border onto the 9 inchers to make them 12"
I do hope everyone sends different patterns but everyone will have different fabric so there would be a real variety even if we did all do the same pattern.
It will be fun to see the the various interpretations of my Spring Garden theme. My only request is that there be some green or brown in each block. I just can't immagine a spring garden without brown and green......unless maybe it's a year where it snows on Easter LOL. That could happen.
Thanks Dan. Good questions. I wanted to be open to ideas but things seem to be firming up nicely.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I'm definitely in on this!! Sounds like alot of fun! I would also prefer the 12 in blocks. Other than that, just let me know what need to do and I'll be glad to join! Thanks, Melinda

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

More answers here.
Linda, no backing and/or stuffing. Just the block.
That way, each trader can finish the project their own way.
Maybe a wall hanging with just one or two blocks. Or, a table runner with 6 or 8 or even a quilt top.
I still want to offer the option of swapping with all the traders or just with me. To make this possible, I am going to limit this swap to twelve people. That way, the most blocks anyone needs to make will be 12. If you choose to do less that's OK too.
Can we finish the blocks and get them to me by March 5th?
I'm going to start tomorrow. I'm pretty excited.
Melinda, It's great to have you joining the group. I don't think I've been in a swap with you in quite a while.
Linda, feel free to keep the questions comming.
Melinda, Dan and Linda sound firm on joining, so as folks decide, Please let me know what size blocks you want and the upper limit on the number you want to make.
Don't feel bad if you only want to do ONE. That was what I had sorta been thinking in the beginning so that's fine.

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Hi Beth and everyone!

I would like to play too! This winter has been miserable here and I need an indoor diversion. :) I think 12 in. blocks would be neat but will go with the group decision.
I would love a "wall quilt" project that came from fellow garden addicts! ;) My only fear is getting to a fabric shop soon enough to get the blocks done (we're in ANOTHER winter storm advisory). But now that I have an idea on a "target" date, it would make the mission a priority!

Dee

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I say that a 12 inch block is just fine..swapping with each player is fine annnddddd I'm definately in!..."L"

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

If we're going to be limiting this to 12 people, I can definitely get my 12 blocks done and sent by March 5th. I've got a 3-day weekend starting tomorrow, and was already planning on doing some quilting, so I just might have them done by Tuesday! How cool would that be?
I think I'll save up my blocks and make a "Garden Web Quilt" once I have enough of them to finish a quilt top.
I can see this becoming a regular thing. As a matter of fact, when this swap is finished, I'll volunteer to host the next one if there's enough interest.
Beth, I think you've started something here. ((clapping))

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

hello
ok I think I will do 4, 4 with sashing and border will make a nice wall hanging. just a small request, if everyone could put a small piece of paper with thier names on them with each of thier blocks so we all who made the blocks we get, I would like to put the names of the makers on the back of the finnished quilt.
if anyone needs help finding/choosing thier blocks to make quilters cache has lots of patterns and you just print out the instructions.

I just finnished 3 blicks for the quilt block lotto last night, so I have the time to make more.

thanks beth

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I'm in, Beth! I think leaving the pattern up to the individual is great- that way we all do something that is comfortable for us & we don't worry so much. Also, it'll give a bigger variety of the blocks we receive.
I also like the idea of making blocks for everyone (that's 12 or so, right?). Would we just send them to you, along with postage to return them...and at least one seed pack with each block? (that way everyone gets 12 blocks & 12 seed packs)

Any way you choose to do it will be fine with me. I like Michelle's idea of including our name as well. I know I personally wouldn't mind if everyone SIGNED the quilt blocks they sent- somewhere on the front of the block with a fabric marker. (although I understand if not everyone would like that!!! but know that it's a definite WANT for me, if you'd like to...maybe just mark that block specifically for me? so others wouldn't be disappointed?)

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Dee!!!! Faintheart, you are another one who I have not had any contact with in a couple years. What a treat. Hope your weather cooperates.
These folks have said they are definately in:
Melissa/HAzlenut doing 12 blocks
Michelle/Mickerey doing 4
Dan the mailman doing 12
Dee/Faintheart
Beth doing 12
I plan to initial my blocks and ask that you either sign your blocks OR pin your name on them.
I'll send everyone my address so as you finish, you can send them to me and I will redistribute when all blocks are received.
Seeds will also be exchanged and returned to those who send them.
Dan you are right this is a neat thing we have going here. And Michelle, you are right about being a Busy Bee. I remember as a Scout Leader we used the saying " the busiest People Get the most done". It's sure true.
I think that ties up all the loose ends but, if not, please remind me
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

"waving" Beth, you forgot me! I will do 12..this is neat!

Dan, can you send me that quilt link you use? I have a ton of fabric. I received from Freecylce an entire box in one of those under the bed chests plus a garbage bag full. The lady was a quilter and was getting rid of some of her material (I have no idea why!) so I'm good to go.

There is also a winter advisory here too..we're getting between 4-9 inches. I guess that they haven't decided yet. I was just outside to bring in some wood and you can smell the snow in the air.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Oh, I just can't stand it - so many great people are in this swap and it's fabric and it's garden related, and it's fun! However, I really don't think that I can commit to more than 2 blocks within this time frame. Is that okay? Mine will be 12" - my hope is that there may be a follow-up at some point and I will be able to commit to making 10 more at that point.
What do you think, Beth? Am I totally messing things up by joining in and only sending 2 blocks (and seeds)? If so, just let me know and make space for someone who can make more blocks to share.
Jeanne

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Linda, OOPS! So sorry but yes, you're in. I now have you in the note book too. I do most everything on paper to be sure . That way I can draw lines and cross stuff out etc.
I love the computer but ,,,,
Jeanne I'd love to have you join too. MAybe I'll make your second square a prize for a game. Anyway, I'll figure some fair way to decide who to send it too.
With Jeanne and Linda, that makes eight
leaving four places.
If you're on the fence, don't wait too long, though it sounds like Dan will be comming along with another block swap. so you'll get another chance
thanks everybody. I'm enjoying this a lot.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I wish I knew how to quilt. I use to cut patterns for the NASA spacesuits but never did anything sewing beyond a straight line or a whip stitch. Maybe I will experiment and get myself ready for a future quilting swap. Have fun everyone!

Denise

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Denise I don't know what I'm doing either, so you can't be worse than that!.."L" Check into some quilting sites and then sign up.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Okay, before I start to sew, do you want the block to measure 12" once it is sewn in place (finished size) in which case we make it 12 1/2" or do you want the unfinshed block to be 12 inches? I was thinking the first option, but I decided I'd better check.
I have no problem with my second block being a prize. That would be great or whatever you decide is fine.
I hope there is a follow up swap a bit later in the year so those who don't get a block from me this time can get one later on.
Thanks!
Jeanne

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Go to the website quilterscache.com

There are hundreds of free quilt block patterns- arranged by size & difficulty, so you can pick which ones look appealing & easy to you. Even if something is marked as beginner or expert, be sure to look at the pattern first. Some are VERY easy and marked "expert", while some are VERY difficult & marked "beginner". Just look around until you find something you like! :o)

A good starting one is called "Antique Tile". It's simply rectangles & squares, so it's a great one to cut your teeth on!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Linda, Thanks for the encouragement but I don't want to get in over my head so I think I will sit this one out. I'm sure there will be more swaps in the future.

Denise

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Sounds good to me! I will do 12 blocks. I would prefer the blocks to be 12 1/2 inches when we get them. That makes them 12 inches when finished! Let me know any more details!! Thanks, Melinda

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

if someone will tell me what I need to do with the 12, I will be willing to try, always wanted a quilt, so it is a way to get one, although my bank is having a lottery for a eagle one from the oltimers group but in case I don't win this would work, I'll go look at quilting site. hugs carol

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Denise, I'm going to host a block swap after this one is over, with a tentative "send-in-by" date of April 15th. I'll post more about it around the beginning of March, so all of you who'd like a longer time-frame, or simply want to prepare for another swap while sewing for this one, be looking for it.

Beth, can you clarify the seed thing for me? Are we sending in one packet of seeds with each block? I like that idea, but really don't have that many seed packets to send in. I didn't save any seeds this fall, and I was planning on planting the seeds I do have. I would rather just send in the quilt blocks, if that's okay.

And lastly, I would rather receive blocks with the names pinned to them.

-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Jeanne, you are right about the blocks needing to be 12 1/2 inches to finish up at 12. So, yes, that is what they should be. Thanks for the reminder .
Denise, I'd like to encorage you to give it a try. A Straight line is a great place to start and pieced blocks tend to be straight lines, so there you go. Don't feel obligated but do give it a try. It's such a peaceful pastime when weather prevents gardening.
Carol, You are here too !!!???!!!! Whooohooo.
Boy am sure I going to treasure this quilt. Pick a nice easy pattern from quilt cache, the fewer pieces the better as a general guess and give it a whirl.
Hope you win the one from the lottery too but if your luck is like mine you better start working on one yourself. LOL.
It looks like there will be pleanty of help and encouragement available here and I'm hopeing we can post pictures of finished products maybe durring Dan's follow up.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

With or without seeds - either is fine for me.
Dan, I am glad to hear that you will host a later swap. Hopefully I can get more blocks completed for that one.
Pin the name on the block? Hey, I can handle that! LOL
Jeanne

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

COUNT ME IN!!I`ll try for 12 but if I can`t finish that many,I`ll let you know. Robin

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth, I know! Haven't been here in ages. I am hoping to do 12 blocks. But, my Mom is having health problems. She had been hospitalized locally the first week in January. Without getting into details, late today I called a specialist after Mom called and said her appt. with her personal physician today did not go well. We could get her in to see the specialist Monday afternoon but another winter storm is forecast late Sunday/Monday. After explaining the situation to his nurse, on her advice... tomorrow I will be taking her to an ER at a major hospital where the specialist is located that is 80 miles away.

If you would all keep her in your prayers, I would appreciate it. I hope to be back in the next day or two with better news and quilt blocks to think about. Just in case I don't get back on GW for a few days, you all will know I have other issues to deal with for the moment. Thanks.

Dee

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I am going to have to bow out until next winter. There is no way I can make that many blocks in a month. I am starting a computer program class plus working. I have seeds coming up that are going to need repotting within a week or so. Would love to do this early next winter.

Ellie

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Ellie, if you could do one block, that would be fine. Not everyone is going to be able to do 12 blocks, and we all understand that. I'd like to be able to say that I could do that every month or so, but that's just not reality for me. I'm going to be able to do some this weekend because I have 3 days off, and was already planning on doing some sewing. Once Spring hits, I don't think any of us will be able to do many quilt blocks at a time, but it will be good to keep this group going. I didn't realize there were so many quilters here on the GW, but I'm glad to find out that there are!
Let me re-iterate it again, if anyone feels like they can't participate in this swap, there will be more. Keep joining in on the conversation, and who knows? You might find yourself with some unexpected time and able to quilt a block or two to share with your comrades! These swaps are like the seed swaps, you can send in one to trade, or a dozen. It's all up to you!
Now, would anyone like a cup of hot chocolate? I've got some ready to pass around, and I believe there are some sugar cookies about ready to come out of the oven. What's a quilting bee without refreshments?
***passing around cookies and hot chocolate***

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Dee, I totally understand. Hope all goes well for your Mom
Elllie, Dan is right on his idea and explaination.
This message will be brief and I'm not sure how soon I'll be back to the computer. Took Jack to the ER for some chest pain late yesterday and they kept him. The tests looked OK so far but last spring was bad and he said it sorta felt like the same pain. When he agreed to go that scared me even more as he tends to be just a bit stubborn :)
OK Dan, I'll take some hot chocolate but it's too early in the AM for Baileys. and I need to drive to town soon.
PS Welcome Robin. Happy to have you join us.

HELP!!! with hexagons

Last night I went out to my parents' house, and I wound up going through some fabric with my mother. She's been saving some partially sewn blocks my paternal grandmother had done, and some hexagon pieces to finish them up. Now take a wild guess who has them now! I DO!!! My grandmother died when I was 5, which means that these pieces/blocks are at least 40 years old, which qualifies them as heirlooms in my book. Now, I've never pieced together a Flower Garden quilt, much preferring to use squares, rectangles, and triangles. Has anyone ever put one of these together? Or know of a website I can visit which will teach me how to sew these hexagons together?

Mom also gave me a couple of unfinished Dresden Pie Plates my grandmother had sewn together. All I have to do with them is add the center circles and then I think I'll add them to the wall-hanging I'm going to make out of this grand discovery! It kind of feels like a way to re-connect with my grandmother, so I don't want to screw this up.
I'll keep you all posted on my progress.

-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth, I'm keeping the bailey's out of the drinks, and I didn't even put the "oregano" I'm famous for in the cookies. When dealing with needles, I prefer to be sober, don't you? LOL!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

we have an average of about 14 inches of snow. It's still flurrying but I hope that's it. I had to shovel a path across the patio and to a tree where the snow wasn't quite as deep. It's up to the dogs necks! Piper was running around the yard like she was wave surfing. It was hysterically funny! I took out a tape measure and measured 3 different places. My neighbors would think I was nuts but they're used to me.."L". I'm going to settle in for the day and make some tea and chill out. I guess you would call that a "snow day"!

I think I'll go through the material I have and see what's what. Dan, I went to the website that Bunny posted about and there are some truely lovely patterns there. YOu may find what you're looking for there. I found a few for the "newbie" quilters too that I liked. Check it out!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth - I didn't count the number of people but if there is still an available spot I would love to do this. I haven't quilted before but I do love to sew.

So add me on for 12 pieces:-) This was a wonderful idea! And I love the idea about adding the names to who gave which piece and the seeds! yahoo, something new!

Linda - I just got done shoveling for the second time today and decieded to check the site out. Pass some tea my way ;-)

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth, I hope everything turned out okay with Jack and his tests and you got a good report. That is so frightening.

Dan, that is great that you got those blocks that your grandmother made. I know how special that is. I have quilts and blocks from my great-grandmother and wouldn't trade them for anything. As for the hexagon pieces, I have never worked with them, but I think maybe they are intended so that you hand sew them and try to make the stitches small and unnoticeable - kind of like hand sewing applique pieces. If you find out more of what you should do with them, let me know. When you mentioned the type of hexagon, I knew right away what they are - I have seen pictures of those type of quilts. They look very beautiful.

Well, have a good weekend and those with snow, I hope you can snuggle up and read a good book, make some homemade soup or bread and do all those other good things to do when the weather turns nasty. Our rain has stopped for awhile and the sun was out earlier, but our ground is so wet. We seem to get several days of rain every week. I can't remember us ever getting this much rain in the winter, but maybe it's just my memory... or lack of memory!
Jeanne

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I just found out that we will be going on overtime the rest of this month, so that means working on Saturdays and extra 2 hrs. a day! But can't complain in this day and time, as I have a job!! But will still try and do 12 quilt blocks!
Still have to have brown and green in them? Everyone agreed to 12 1/2 inch blocks?
I am a little fuzzy on all the specifications! Thanks, Melinda

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Melinda, this is what we're doing as I understand it. Beth can correct us if we're wrong.
1) The number of people in this swap will be limited to 12
2) All of our quilt blocks are to have some sort of green or brown in them
3) We can send in between 1 - 12 quilt blocks
4) The blocks should all be 12.5" X 12.5" so the finish up as a 12" block when sewn together

I'm not sure if we're sending them all to Beth so she can redistribute them or not.
I believe seeds are an option.
I think we're to pin or tape our names to the underside of the blocks we send in, but I'm not 100% on that.

Does that about cover it everyone?

-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Tammy, we are happy to have you join the group. I'm betting there are lots of folks who love to sew but never quilt. There are others who specialize in quilting tops that someone else has made. I am now in the process of quilting and finishing up two quilts that were pieced by my mom and Grandmother. There are two more waiting that were done by Jack's late Wife.
I sure don't want to specilize in that as the piecing and planning are much more fun to me.
Here is the current list of players.
1)Melissa doing 12
2)Michelle " 4
3)Linda " 12
4)Dan " 12
5)Carol Bea 12
6) Robin 12
7)Tammy 12
8)Melinda 12
9) Beth 12
10)
11)
12)
Then, there is Jeanne who is doing two and Dee who is hopeful maybe for another 12.
I think I will not count Jeanne in the 12 as she is doing two and I plan to use one of her blocks as a prize.I'm saving a spot for Dee but that still leaves two open spots OR maybe more if someone else wants to do less than 12.
Jeanne, I will still send two blocks back to you.
Each player will get the same # back as they send.Same goes for the seeds.
Here is a brief update on Jack. He is staying at least another day as they hope to get his heart rate regulated by adjusting his meds. It goes from the 30's and 40's to well above 100 just lying in bed. You're right Jeanne. It's scary. He figures as long as he didn't have another heart attack he's OK. Sure hope he is right.

 o
one more thing

I missed the posts from Melinda and Dan while I was composing and correcting my post. I know, I know I'm super slow.
Anyway, Dan has it straight on the points above and, I'd really like bwown or Green in the block but I'm sure not going to reject anyone's work.
I found a quilting magazine today with a "Sampler Quilt in it and I picture this being something like that. I'll use borders and/or sashing to co-ordinate and tie things together as needed.
Yes, they will all come to me and I will redistribute them. I expect postage to be about $3,00 first class or a flat rate priority envelope.
How much is that these days Dan?
I mailed fat quarters to Michelle today and either would have worked fine. They seem to weigh about an ounce each. Probably Flat Rate for 12 or first class for smaller amounts. Usually first class and priority are about the same speed.
Hope I covered all the bases now. If not OR, if I missed anyone on the list above please wave or whistle.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth, I'm not sure about the rates. Sending 12 quilt blocks might fit into a small flat-rate box, which is about $5. What I'm going to with mine is send them in a large padded envie, along with return postage already printed out, and a self-addressed address label for you to attach to the envelope. That way, you can avoid a trip to the post office and put the envelope in your mailbox for your carrier to pick up.

I've already been asked about the color scheme and patterns for the next swap, and I believe I'm going to leave that up to the individual to decide. We'll stick with the 12.5" size so the blocks from both swaps can be used together in a project. Just thought I'd put that out there for those who like to plan ahead...

Beth, should we send you our address in an e-mail so you can send your address to us? Some of us already have your addie, but possibly someone doesn't. I've got to give you kudos for posting this swap. It really does look like something we're going to enjoy for quite awhile.

G'night everyone. Bump is sending me to bed.

Peace.
-Dan

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Hello,I`m leaving tomorrow to stay with my mother a few days. She`s not feeling well and needs a little TLC.I have my fabric etc. all packed .I think I can make my blocks while there.I`ll post when I get back home.Beth,I`ll say prayers for Jack. Will you all send one up for my Momma, please? It seems like she`s so weak everything gets her down and she just doesn`t have the strength to bounce back anymore. She seems so frail and tired.I`m worried about her. Thanks for listening. Robin

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Robin~ Prayers for you & your mom. I can imagine how worried you are. Remember that you can come & chat with us anytime you need it. :o)

Beth~ Prayers for Jack. Men can be so frustrating with their health care, so when they give in that easily, you know they REALLY don't feel good. I hope everything gets figured out soon so ya'll will know how to care for him.

BTW: I got your email with your addy, too, Beth. Thanks for sending that along! I have 4 of my blocks cut & ready to sew. I just ran out of thread, and there isn't a store nearby to run & get some quickly. I'll have to plan that trip with another errand, so I'm not wasting 3 gallons of gas just for a $2 spool of thread! LOL

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

i'm sorting through my material and printed off the pattern I'm making. This ouught to be interesting.

Beth I received your address, thanks so much....everyone keep warm, safe and busy!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Well, I am certainly keeping all in my prayers that need them! Sorted through some material. Hope to do 12!! Not sure with all overtime coming up! But suppose to get another winter storm in so maybe can't go anywhere!! Melinda

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I've got 3 done so far, more to come tonight. Instead of rooting for anyone during the Game, I'm watching it for the commercials. They're always great! LOL!!!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Count me in on this if there is still room. 12 squares for me. Is everybody doing the same square or different squares.
Dan how lucky to have things from a grandparent. Nobody in my family quilts but that was my one thing to do when I retired and moved north. So now I have 5 tops ready to go. So many ideas in my head I never know where to start next.
There are a lot of quilting pages out there, the one I like is Color Book quilting but I'll go to the closet and find the web page. In the time being count me in.
gmom

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Bunny, Robin, and all Thanks for the prayers. Jack is home with orders to do nothing stressful or physically taxing until he gets his stress test done. He's enjoying the game now and we are both so happy to be home.
Bunny we plan out our trips to town too, It's 15 miles of scenic ( translate as scary) roads and we try to limit trips.
Linda and Melinda good to hear about your sorting and planning stages. I love sorting the fabirc in the closet too. A bit like sorting and dreaming with a box of seeds.
Hey Dan, so far I like the Doritos and the dog best.
G mom Welcome welcome welcome. Very glad to hve you join us. Each person picks their own pattern but try to include at least a bit of green or brown,to follow the spring garden theme.
I'm trying to finish up my Snowy Valentine project before I start this one. I have the fabric stacked for the Spring Garden but I was planning on using the other one for next Sunday so that deadline is getting close. It's all done except the border and binding so it should be done in a day or so if all goes well.
Again Thanks for the pravers and good thoughts.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I didn't think about this before hand, but all 12 of my blocks will be different. I have an abundance of fabric scraps that I'm using, so they'll all be different fabrics. But I'm also using different patterns because not every fabric will work well with one pattern.
I hope that won't be a problem?

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

This swap is so hard to resist! I've been debating about joining for a few days- and decided.. count me in! If we do this a few times we will quickly have a quilt throw (for the couch) what a neat idea, thanks Beth!

Deb

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

mine will be differnt too Bunny..."L"..probably VERY different!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

OK. guys I found fabric and started cutting but am not sure if this is going to turn out how I am planning. So just a word of warning if they don't turn out to my satisfaction them I will be 'out' because I don't want to send something that does not look very ahemmmm pretty.

So with that in mind I found a very pretty pattern for squares on the the outside and trianges in the middle that form a flower, it is so pretty I just hope mind turns out as it should. We shall see. I will post a photo when I get the 1st one done so I can get feed back to make sure I did everything ok.

Tammy

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Bunny and Linda, I LOVE it that the blocks will be different. The only hard thing will be deciding who to send them to when I redistribute.
Chances are good that several of mine will be different too. The more patterns I look at the more I want to try. There are at least four I;m definately going to do.
This sure is another addiction and I'm well hooked.
I'm getting very anxious to start seeing these squares. Bet some of you are too.
Prayers continue for Robin and her Mom.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I wanted to do some more quilting tonight, but my eyes are still a little dilated from this afternoon. I'm typing this slowly, in the dark, and squinting. So you'll have to read it slowly and forgivingly, okay?
The good news is that both cats were given a lot of compliments and clean bills of health. More good news was that the stigmatism in my left eye is smaller now, which is why my eyesight in that eye has improved. The bad news was that I'm going to have to start wearing bifocals. HMPHH!!! Getting older sucks!!! LOL!!! Ah well, life goes on, eh? (that's the lesson learned from watching Steel Magnolia's) Some more good news was that my eye doctor didn't want me to work for a few days so my eyes could recover a bit more from eye fatigue, caused by sorting all that mail with poor eyesight. You know what I call that??? PAID MINI-VACATION! Gotta find that silver lining somewhere, right? So, though I may not be able to do any sewing tonight, I've got two more days off to do some more. hehehe It'll be such a hardship (said absolutely dripping with sarcasm).

Different quilting blocks? Now, there's a novel idea! hehehe I love it! Now really, did you all think you'd get identical blocks from me? Pshaw!

Linda, I talked with Mom today, and she said to tell you again she loves that brooch! She keeps looking at and finding more to like about it. And, it seems that she was asked where it came from when she wore it to church yesterday, and Dad told a few ladies that "It's an original piece, made just for her." LOL! Girl, you're invited over for dinner anytime! They'd love to meet "the artist"!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Tammy, That sounds pretty. Hope it works well.
My daughter said exactly the same thing though when I asked her to do a square. I'll try but if it doesn'r work I'm NOT sending it. LOL. I remember feeling thaat way at one time too. Since then I've sorta learned how to pick patterns that will work for me.
Michelle, I'm sure any/every one here would be happy to get a block fom you if you do that many. Make as many as you are comfortable doing.
Glad the quarters arrived. I'm looking foreward to the actual swap.
Dan I love the good news/bad news. Emjoy! Nothing like a few unexpected days off to get all happy about.
By the way I just found another site that I love.
Quiltville, com Lots of neat ideas for using up your odds and ends.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth - Is there some information that you want from us to keep in your records for this swap? I don't remember reading in the past post.
I think my squares are going to be "Rose of Sharon" in applique.
On the paper that we send with our name we should also list the name of the block. What do you think?

Your right Dan, getting old Is not what it is cracked up to be!!!!

gmom

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I've got all 12 of mine finished & packed up to go. The envelope weighs between 7-8 ounces, so it'll be around $2.50 to send first class. Just wanted to share that with everyone so that ya'll would know how much to plan for. :o)
I should be mailing this out on Friday, Beth, so look for it sometime next week.

Oh, and the kiddos helped me choose some of the patterns & fabric, so there are some blocks that are more on the "wild" side (just brighter colors & designs) and some are pastels..most are some sort of floral, though. There should be a good selection for everyone! :o)

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Hi everyone,

I am still in for 12! Got my pattern(s) picked out and should have time to get them done and to Beth on time. Beth, I do need your address update or the blocks will go to the wrong side of the US! :)

My mom is still hospitalized since we went to ER on Saturday. She is in very good care now. She has lots of specialists working hard and making progress. I am breathing a little sigh of relief these days after what we went through with her family practitioner.

Dee

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth,
Please make a list of the rules. When we need to have them to you and where we send them.
This is gona be so much fun.

Thanks
gmom

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Here;s a condensed set of rules ( I sorta hate rules but here goes)
Theme" Spring Garden"
Close date is March 5, that is send so I have them by the 5th ro return
Size is 12 1/2" sq
# is your choice up to 12. You will get back the same # that you send.
Pattern your choice
Color your choice but try to include some green and/or brown.
Postage send same amount that it cost you to mail your blocks.
Names for block pattern and name of person who made them to be included and MOST prefer that it NOT be on the block it self but on a separate paper.
If you want to swap seeds too the same amount of packs you send will be returned 1:1
I tried to send my address to each of you. It sounds like some did not arrive. Does anyone besides gmom need a resend?
Sorry this is so short. I've been gone all day to a dental appt and will try to catch to everything else in the AM OK?

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth, no apologies needed. You're doing great!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth,what a great idea !!!
Sounds really fun, too bad I don't have the time to get involved in this one. I love to quilt and have 2 quilts started, one of these days I'm going finish them.

Can't wait to see some finished quilts. Oh how exiting!!!

Hugs,Carmen

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Bunny, you are positively amazing. You go girl.
I have 4 done , two half done and two more cut.
I'm making identical pairs so I can keep one and share one. Now if I can figure out how to post pictures I'll do that and give a preview.
Dee, hope things continue to go well for your Mom.
Carmen, sorry to miss you this time but I'm sure there will be others that we can share. Thanks for stopping to say hello.
How are the rest of you doing? Anyone else have anyblocks done?
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I have them all cut out and two squares made so far...far from perfect though.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Just wanted to confirm that mine are in the mail. All have my name pinned to them, but I forgot to include the pattern name. Here are the ones I used:

Baby Bud
Antique Tile
Lover's Knot
Pennsylvania

All can be found on quilterscache.com They were all extremely simple & fast to put together, so I would recommend those patterns to anyone just starting out. Especially Pennsylvania & Antique tile. They are just squares & rectangles- VERY simple.

Now ya'll know my secret to getting them done so quickly. LOL!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Thanks for the info Bunny. PA is my home state even though I have not lived there for years. I gotta try that one.
I'm having fun trying different blocks. So glad I found that article about the "Sampler Quilt". It's perfect for this project.
hugs
Beth

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I had 4 blocks done, but then I went to Joann's and found new material, which gave me some more ideas, so I'm starting all over. LOL! I'm mailing mine out on Monday though. I do a lot better if I have a deadline.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

It's snowing! I know if you are in 75% of the country, that is no big deal - at least the way things went this winter. LOL However, it's our first snowfall of the winter and we seldom get more than one snowfall a year and sometimes it's more of an "ice fall." This is pretty snow that is sticking to the trees and branches - really coming down, too. Anyway, guess who decided to make one of her blocks this afternoon? I think I got a bit distracted watching the snow - but one down and one to go. I hope to get them mailed out to you next week, Beth.
Everyone have a good weekend and Valentine's Day!
Jeanne

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Wow, everyone is really getting with it! But I have my patterns picked ! I have all the material here just will go through it and decide on colors this weekend. But going to have company all weekend-it's Valentines and my bd on monday so will probably not get to them then! But will be getting them done after that!
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and stay warm!!!
Hugs, Melinda

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

What a difference a few hours makes! I now have all my blocks done, packaged, and ready to put into the mail stream as soon as I get to work in the morning. ***sigh***
Now I can sit back and enjoy while I wait on Beth to send me back a box full of quilt blocks! Yahoo! I can hardly wait to see what you all do!
***just a note*** I made mine a little larger than the 12.5"x12.5". I asked Stella about it (she was "administrating") and she said larger was better than smaller. LOL! Bump slept through the whole thing.
Cats. Go figure.

Peace.
-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth, they're on their way there! You should get my box of blocks on Tuesday.
So, now I have to decide if I want to get ahead on the next swap, or work some on a quilt I've been sewing on for awhile. Hmmm, what to do, what to do? I know! I know! I'll do both this weekend! (((chuckle))) We've certainly got the weather for it! We're getting scattered snow showers for the next few days, with the temps hovering in the high 20s, so doing some sewing would be a good idea, don't you all think? This kind of weather definitely calls for indoor activities! Oh yeah!

Peace.
-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I have 9 squares finished and I'm going to work on the others tomorrow. I have more cut out than I need so I'm going to do all of them and then pick out the most decent looking ones to send.

I have a question. When we have all of our quilt exchanges finished, how is everyone going to finish up the quilts? I'm looking for suggestions...and general ideas..."S"

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Linda, after I'm through making a quilt top, I go to either Joann's or Wal-Mart. They've got the batting already quilted to the backside of the quilt, which makes things a whole lot easier to do! I then pin it to the quilt top, run some finishing fabric along the edges, and sew it all together. My final step is to lay the new quilt out and, using embroidery thread, tie it together so there's no slippage.
After my quilt is finished, I fold it up for a rainy day. Then I throw it into the dryer for about 15 minutes while I grab a book and make something to drink. By the time I have that ready, the quilt is toasty warm, and I'm all ready to sit down and enjoy a good read.
I believe I may just sit down with a good T&M catalog this time! BTW, how're you doing with the new catalog? Got your order done yet? LOL!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

no Dan I don't..."sticking out tongue and giving you a raspberry". I've been browsing though and I'm going to try to contain myself...yeah, right!

BTW, how many people are including seeds with their quilt squares?

I think I'm getting addicted to this quilting thing..after all I have that biiggggg box of fabric to go through! I noticed there's baby material in there too. Guess I'll make a quilt for the grandbaby...(still can't get used to saying that!.."L")

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

WOW!! some of you are moving right along here. Two finished and in the mail and Linda with 9 finished. I'm impressed. Grinning and applauding.
Not a lot of progress here, at least not on this project.LOL. I have however finished up the Snowy Valentine table cover for today's family dinner and I made the curtains for the Bed Room yesterday. Also have the Quilt/Spread/Comforter for the BR almost done. It's spread over the bed and looking good. At least to me.
Dan I did not know about the quilting and backing combo. I'm going to check that out this week. Thanks for the tip. That sounds like a terrific time saver. I was thinking about sending it out to be commercially done.
Linda, I'm betting you'll love the Grannie routine once you get into it. I fully support the idea that "if I knew Grandchildren were so much fun I'd have had them first".
Happy Valentines day to all.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Finished up my twelve blocks today! All of them are the same and will include seeds as well. :) Today was another blizzard-like day so was perfect for sewing blocks while watching the Daytona 500. Tomorrow will pack them up for mailing on Tuesday when the PO is open.

I am really excited to see everyone's blocks! This is so much fun. I hadn't done any quilting yet this season and this was a perfect motivation even though ol' man winter is persistent in trying to motivate!

I would love to see what projects others are working on. I'll share a couple that I did last yr to get started...a valentine mini-quilt and a wall quilt for the bedroom.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Linda....I think it's cool that we could enable you to find a new "addiction". *giggles* In our variable climates, we need something to occupy the colder months ya know! Wintersowing is great too but the "product" doesn't show up until the temps cooperate....sooooooo quilting calms me in the winter months and stops the "shakes". *L*

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Melinda, HAPPY BIRTHDAY a few hours early!!! <:)

Dee

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

good heavens! After seeing those quilts, I"m scared to death to send my squares! "hiding them behind my back"..."L" They are really quite lovely Dee!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Linda, don't you dare hold back your squares!!! I'm expecting to get one in my return box, and I know others are too. Don't make me come over there!!!

Dee, those really are nice! How did you get the hearts on the mini-quilt?

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Ackkkkkkkkk! Linda, I certainly didn't mean to scare you. If there is not one of your blocks in my pkg. I am gonna have to come over there with Dan and everyone else! We are sure to love each block shared because they came from the heart. That's what is so cool about this exchange! Now stop hiding those squares. *pours a cuppa with a splash of Bailey's to help calm Linda* *adds another splash to be sure* :)

Dan, I used "wonder under" (a fusible product for applique) to fuse the hearts to the block and then a tight zig-zag stitch to outline them.

Dee

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I feared as much. I've never done any applique, but I've seen some great work done with it. When we get to Linda's house, maybe you could show me how to do it...hehehe.

Linda, would Saturday be okay with you for us all to come over? Some of us will be coming from quite a distance so it'll take a few days to get everyone to your house. And, this'll give you time to either plan a dinner, or run away, your choice! LOL! (now, wouldn't it be funny for some of us to actually show up on her doorstep? we've got her address...)

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

The company is gone. The leftovers are in the fridge and the kitchen is cleaned up.
Now, back to my sewing machine.
Dee your projects are beautiful. I totally agree we will love all the blocks. This is a real love sharing project we have going here. Come on Linda. It's going to be grear fun to get together for our lesson this Sat. Want us to bring our own chairs?
Meanwhile, I'm trying "Magic Cross" block. It looked so easy but now I'm wondering. Well, It's cut and I'm going to do it one way or another.Ha......
Guess I stalled long enough here so now back to work.
pS My winter sow radishes and lettuce are up today

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Wow, what a fantastic idea this is. I like the idea of having a choice of how many you want to send. It makes me wish I knew how to quilt. I am hoping that you guys keep this type of exchange going until I can find the time to learn to make the quilt blocks. I will certainly take the first step and check out the website.

I hope more pictures will be posted. I will be keeping an eye out here. Have fun everyone.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I told my one friend, who's a VERY serious sewer, that I was making quilt squares. She was horrified to find out that I wasn't using a cutting board thingy and rotary, just scissors and a measuring tape. We're going Thursday to JoAnne's fabrics to remedy that situation....LOL!!
I told her that I already had 9 made..I think I hear her shuddering through the phone!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Linda I love the story about your friend's horror.
I grew up watching my Grandmother make quilts with scissors needle thread and scraps. The patterns were pieces of cardboard traced from some other ladies quilts. I never got the impression that it was difficult Or a big deal.
When I made my first quilt I had no instructions and no pattern. Just some scraps of courdoroy in jewel tone colors that I loved. The result was beautiful and I loved it until it finally fell apart.
Years later I went to take a class and learned about all the "rules and tools". I even found a book where the author said "if you use some wierd fabrics like courdoroy or velvet , don't tell anyone you used my book" ( MY paraphrased memory of the quote).
I guess the point is that I don't think anyone should be intimidated or put off by all the rules and tools. If you enjoy this and really get into it... yes, you'll probably want all the gadgets. But, what if you buy all the stuff and then decide that quilting is just not your thing?
If the blocks look the way you wanted/expected them too look then enjoy and don't worry about all the "shouldas".
My Dad was a very wise man and he used to say, If you are not enjoying what you are doing, then you probably should be doing something else. Most anything can be fun with the right attitude. I had a son who loved to turn the compost pile. LOL

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Linda, it's called "hand-made". While a rotary cutter might make it faster for you to cut, that doesn't mean it'll make it better. You do what makes it fun for you. Got it?
I too grew up watching quilts made with measuring tape and scissors, though it was my mother who was making them. What I liked about it all was that she'd let me go through her bags and boxes of scraps, some of which I recognized as school clothes I'd grown out of (and yes, there was corduroy in there too), and then she'd give me a needle and thread so that I could "sew" with her. She still has some of my earliest "work" in a scrap book, and we both have some awesome memories.

Knowing how you're making those quilt blocks just makes them all the better in my eyes Linda. And that goes for everyone who is busily putting together some quilt blocks. I'm looking forward to seeing the handiwork of my friends/family here on the GW.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

don't know if I can be in this since people keep saying they have a number done and I don't know what done means help miss stupid here, a lil northern girl

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Hi Everyone,I`m back home for at least a week.My Mother developed a blood clot in her lung while I was there so we spent a couple of nights in the hospital. My sister is staying with her this week so I can be at home.I only live about 5 miles from her but she doesn`t have internet. Now she has home health nurses and physical therapists coming to her home and we have to give her 2 injections of blood thinner in her belly twice a day.
I didn`t get to work on my squares as much as I thought I would but I did get them all cut out.I`m doing 12 of the same pattern. This is so exciting!! Robin

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Hi Robin and welcome home! It's nice that you have someone to pass the torch to for a spell.
Anybody have an answer for Veeja?
OH Joanne's is having a sale this week on sewing and quilting accessories so I guess this is my chance to get the clear plastic angle marker I have been wanting. . I've been stalling but at 50% off.... how can I resist any longer?

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Hi Carol! We're making 12 quilting squares 12 1/2 inches square, pattern of our choice. Each square is not finished or quilted, it's just sewn together. When we say "done" we mean that the unfinished, unbatted square is ready to put in the pile to be shipped to Beth...does that help?

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Whooohoo and Yippie-I-yeah
The mail Lady was good to me today!!!!!
She filled the mailbox with goodies from Dan, Melissa and AKMO.
Dan sent 12 blocks in a pretty combo of greens and blues Variations of ninepatch and in great springy colors. Nice work Dan.
Melissa and the kids sent 12 blocks in great combos of colors, mostly pastels, some beautiful tans, and one adorable print with Frogs in what looks very much like a lilly pond with it's greens and blues. It will be hard to choose a favorite from these. This is a lady with a real eye for colors.
AKMO sent a lovely block in pastels and W-O-W, a combo she described as Crocous in snow. Seeing her choice of pattern I can sure understand doing only one. It's a design called Braid and has lots of little pieces.
What a talented bunch you all are!!!
Sure wish I could post photos of these blocks.
hugs to all of you.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Carol, don't let Linda scare you when she says we're making 12 quilt blocks. Some of us are sending in 12 because we'd like to make a quilt someday out of the quilt blocks we receive in these swaps. You don't have to make that many to send in, but Beth has put that as the upper limit. If you wish, you can send in just one, three, five, or however many blocks you choose, between 1 and 12. Isn't that great?

How is everyone coming along with their squares? We've still got ourselves a few weeks yet before Beth said to have them in, but I've got to admit, I'm getting excited to see what everyone makes! This is so much fun!

Peace.
-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

hello
I sent off mine last week, I ended up doing 9 but kept 2 for myself, and sent in 7. I also sent in some seeds to divy out it is ok if I don't get any back.

Photobucket

this is the center block I made for a round robin swap on the quilt site. with this swap we all made a center and sent it off to the next person on the list, and they would add a border to it and sent it to the next person to add a border. then I would get centers to add borders to. it has been several months since I have seen my center, and can't wait till I get it back.

I like to use a rotery cutter and matt for cutting but I also like to sit in bed and do cutting wile watching TV. this was a problem, but I just found a strip cutter by fiskars, it is like a paper cutter but with an arm that has a rotery cutter on it, I love this tool was a little pricy but got it on sale so it was not too bad.

well I'm off to get the boys to bed.

good night
michelle

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

More blocks are on the way! Put mine in the mail on the way to work this morning. :) I agree...this is fun and Beth's descriptions make it even more so!

Beth, send me pics via email and I will post them for you if you want. Unless of course, we have to be good lil quilters and wait to see?!?

Dee

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Faintheart-Good Work! Those wall hanging are beautiful.

Linda-Don't be scared. We all have days when we don't like our work. But don't hide them.

Veeja-Don't worry about some being done and in the mail. Some of us have more ambition than others. I've changed my mind several times. I was going to do a Rose of Sharon applique block because my name is Sharon and I had some seed to send along. But for some reason I just couldn't get started. Now I'm working on a Wack 'n Stack block and finished 3 today. So this must be the one for me at this time.

Robin-Glad to hear you are home and that you have someone to relieve you. I hope your mother does well.

Micyrey-What a nice square. I like that.

Dan-Have you give your round any thought yet? I'm in for another round if it is a go. Also I'll host a 3rd round if anyone is interested.

Beth-I would love to see all the squares that are sent in.

Good Luck to us all. Now back to work.

gmom

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Gmom, I'm going to post my swap more towards the end of this month, but I have been giving it some thought. I'm going to make it a free-for-all, letting everyone pick their own patterns and colors. I like Beth's idea of making it a limit of 12 blocks for anyone to send in, and we'll keep the size a standard 12.5" by 12.5". Go ahead and make plans for round 3, I think we should keep this going! It's a great idea!

Peace.
-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

by the way, I got to hear the grandbaby's heartbeat on MOnday..I must admit, I did tear up..."S"

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

gee Linda, that's just KEWL!!! do you know what it's going to be yet? )?

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

nope, not until 4 months..she's a little over 9 weeks. The baby is about the size of a gummy bear and has fingers and toes.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Michelle, I love the center block you posted. How big is it? That is a really neat idea. I enjoy quilting and have missed all the other quilters from AK. This is just as good...maybe even better.
Veeja, I have some blocks that are OK and some that are NOT. LOL, I'm enjoying the process and hope you will too. Don't stress over it.
gmom, i sent some pictures for dee to post. It was very kind of her too offer.
Dan aren't you at work today? Somebody has to keep the mail moving.
Linda that is exciting. Please keep us posted.
I just got a message that my very first great grandchild will arive in the fall. It's exciting but makes me think I'm much too far away. Guess I can start thinking about a baby quilt????
Dan and Gmom I'm in for your swaps whenever they are though I may not do 12 blocks for each one. Spring is here and things are getting busy.

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Michelle, we were posting at the same time last night. I love your center block! Will be so fun to see what others in that RR add to it. Isn't it hard to wait and see?

Robin, wishing your Mom continued progress and glad you have family support for a break.

Melissa, I don't know how you do it! You have to be very organized to care for all the lil bunnies and Papa and do all that you do!

DebbyA and Tammy, are you two hidden under fabric swatches?

Gmom, glad you found a block that sparked your creativity. I am going to have to look up wack & stack. Sounds fun!

Linda, I am so excited for you! Would love to have a little one to spoil and send home but son says I have a long wait ahead. lol Enjoy these moments....heartbeat....makes me teary just thinking about it.

Dan, I am stoked for another round! This has been so fun already!!!

Carol, hope you will give it a try. Just pick out a block pattern and give it a whirl. We are all here to answer questions along the way.

Beth, I got one attached file (08) of the blocks in your email. Will post for all to see. They are soooooo pretty!

Sooooooooooo everyone....for a preview from Beth....

Very exciting, this is!!

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing them! I'm working on mine, slowly. My Mom's house is getting new hardwood floors, so I've been busy taking care of things over there, plus trying to handle everything here.
I'm so excited about this, I hope we do this often!

Be back later~

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Oh I'm behind again!!!! Noting really new but I thought after retirement there was supposed to be so much free time / LOL
Thanks a bunch Dee for posting the photo.
The color is disappointung and does NOT do justice to the blocks from Hazlenut Bunny but they are really pretty.
Yesterday I got two more packages of blocks one from Michelle who sent 7 blocks. The pattern is star flower and the colors are exciting. a bright flower print on green a bright yellow/gold print and a two tone green mini blocks.
The effect to me is very much like a field of California poppies and it really makes me Think Spring. Soooo bright and cheerful! Love the effect.
The others were from Dee and they are a combo of rich mellow colors that I just love. The pattern is churn dash 'rosy posy'and the center is a gold blend surrounded by blocks of coppery pink and white flowers with green leaves, triangles of green on green and a cream/tan blend on the outer edge. These colors really "Work"together and set a restful old country garden mood.
Again, I'm so impressed with the different interpretations and moods you folks have created.
Just like all of our gardens are individual and unique, so are our blocks. This is such fun.
Thanks again ladies AND Dan
OH, and both these gals sent seeds to be swapped too.

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

sorry gotta drop out just can't do this swap justice yet maybe next time hugs carol

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth How many are in this swap? I want to send 1 square for each person except me.

Vee Are you dropping out because you don't think you can do this or because something else came up? I don't want to pry, but if you have even one square done that will be fine.

I have 7 blocks done and one I did 4 times. Yesterday was not my day to work on the blocks. Something must be cut wrong size.

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I have a question for everyone. Since we will be continuing to swap quilt blocks after this swap is done, should we adopt a name for ourselves so we'll be able to see when we have a new swap to participate it? If so, does anyone have any ideas for a name? I've been thinking about this, and I think we should have a name, I just can't think of one. The best I've come up with (in my own humble opinion) is the Quilting Bee.
I'd also like to keep our swaps open to new members, being able to come and go as we please. Beth has given us a great beginning by establishing a few rules, but not too many, and I'd like to keep it that way.
What do the rest of you think?

Peace.
-Dan

p.s. You can look for the new swap to be posted either next Saturday or Sunday.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

How about "Gardening Friends Quilters"? or "Gardening Quilting Friends"? ..just my input.."making tea and scones"

 o
RE: oh how about

oh..oh..how about "Square Foot Quilters"?..okay, I'm going back to my corner now...LOL!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

bump

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I was that thinking that maybe with this starting out as a Spring Garden Quilt we could be the Four Season Quilters. However, any name that is selected will be fine with me.

 o
more block previews

Beth sent more block previews to share! :) The first are from Dan and the next is Beth's with the ribbon block from AKMO on the left (middle block). I think they are all gorgeous and would love to have any of them!!!

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Great names all! Any of them would be wonderful.

back to work...
Dee

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

hmmm, I like Square Foot Quilters and Four Season Quilters. Anyone else have any ideas or opinions?

Dee, thanks for posting those pictures!

Now, who did that ribbon block, and where can I get the pattern?

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Dan I like both of those names.
Waiting to see what Melissa comes up with. She is very creative but so are Laura and Heide.
Also hopeing that Melissa is feeling some more energy and hope she is feeling better.
Dee thanks again for posting those photos.
Blocks arrived from Jeanne. There are two and I love both.
One has Daffodils(paper pinwheels pattern)and looks totally springy and bright. The other is w o w and a bright green-blue-orange design. That pattern is called My favorite quilt.
Both available at quilt cache.
The one from AKMO that looks like ribbon is called braid and is also on the quilt cache site.
Today I did some more Log Cabins( probably my fave pattern) and a new one called Red cross. Very Easy and colorful.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I'm still working on my 9 square blocks. I've decided to do a few extra and see which ones look the best and send those. The ones that are sent in are awesome!..

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I'm glad you like the blocks that I sent, Beth. Wish I could have made more, but just too much going on right now. I will trade again and maybe if I do 2 blocks for each swap, I will eventually have enough to put them together --- or there is always the option of a table runner!
Okay, I want to ask what a block name is...photos posted by faintheart on 2/22 --- what is the block that is all the way on the right in the foreground? It looks like it has big puffy flowers on it with a black background. So, if someone knows, pass the name along. I would like to try to make it some time.
We have been having very Spring-like weather so I will be busy in the garden for quite awhile. Lots to do out there.
Have a good day, everyone!
Jeanne

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Jeanne, that block is called Magic Cross. Actually the pattern is the same as Austin but the corner blocks in MC are half squares , so two colors where Austin is all one color. Both are pretty easy.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

How about the GREEN THUMBED QUILTERS?
Or SOIL, SEEDS & STITCHES?

All the blocks look great! I am excited....as many quilts as I've made, I've NEVER made myself one! So I'm planning on making a lap quilt with these blocks. It'll have more meaning with blocks from ya'll. I know I'll smile every time I cuddle on the couch with it.
Hopefully, I can get it finished before the baby gets here! :o)

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Hmmm, Seeds & Stitches? That might work. Tell you what, I'll go ahead and post the new swap with that name, and we can give it a try. If it sticks, it sticks. If not, we can try another name for ourselves in May.
So, go ahead and look for part 2 with the name of Seeds & Stitches, beginning tonight. I was going to wait until this coming weekend, but there are a few people who'd like to get in on the 2nd round, so I'll post it, with the rules, tonight.
Off to post round 2!
Peace.
-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Wow, the blocks are all gorgeous! Not sure if mine are going to be as nice! I haven't sewn in a while and having problems with the tension on sewing maching. Think it is worked out. Been working on them. Not much time-too much on facebook when not at work. But I'll have them by the 5th for you! Sorry running late! I am like everyone else! Love all the names!
Melinda

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Melinda, your blocks will be fine. Mine don't look perfect in person, that's for sure. Once they are put together they generally look fine.
Any that look really bad can turn into pot holders or hot mats. Those take a beating and tend to have fairly short lives anyway.
I really don't want anyone stressing over this.
Bunny, I figured you'd come up with a good name. Thanks.
BB

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Okay, the next swap is posted, for those who were waiting for the next one to participate.
And, for anyone who doesn't think they're blocks will be okay, well, I agree with Beth. This isn't about stressing out and seeing how good of a sewer you are or aren't. It's about sharing another hobby, and having a good time doing so. There's no way we could all get together in the same room for an old-fashioned quilting bee, but I'd have to say that this is the next best thing! And, like I've told Linda, it's the "quirks" in a quilt block that make it unique and special! LOL!
Now, having said all that, I looked up that "braid" pattern, and will be doing some more cutting tonight for a quilt it's inspired me to do. I have a bunch of solid color fat quarters I've been trying to decide how to use, and now I'm thinking of using that pattern to form a cross which meets in the middle of the quilt, possibly a star. I'll post pictures after I've worked on it a bit.

Everyone have a good day!

Peace.
-Dan

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Wow Dan I am seriously impressed. I love the effect but I'm far from ready for that. I struggle with every block to keep it square and fairly well matched

Wooooohoooooooo Beth!!! You did it! As I said before...really pretty! Can we see the king-size project you're working on too please?

I just love seeing everyone's work...inspires some new ideas.

Ok....gotta get back to the kitchen. Will have some red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting for all in a bit. :)

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Beth, those look amazing! Very nice! I am not really stressing on if my blocks are perfect!! Of course, they aren't! LOL! I am enjoying picking out the patterns and colors! Just stressed when my machine messed up and wishing I had more time to do all the things I would like!
Actually, I kinda like my blocks! Very colorful and springy!I am really liking the pics of all of the blocks and would love to have any one of them!!
Gotta go to work, have a great day all! Melinda

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

okay, mine are done. I'm going to gather seeds and try for mailing tomorrow depending on the amount of snow we get.

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

More pictures!!! Cool! They make me feel like a little kid being taken through the toy department a month before Christmas, hoping I get that, that, those, and that! LOL!
Dee's pattern is one my mother uses a lot, and Michelle's are so green! I'm with you Beth, I like them both!
This is going to be such a great looking quilt in a few months when these are all put together!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

what's everyone up to this weekend? I'm thinking about trying out that Braid pattern tomorrow. Just gotta get through one more workday and then it's the big 1-day weekend for me! Maybe the cats will allow me to sleep in tomorrow...YAYYY!!!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

I"m going to go through patterns and see if I can find another one that I can manage.."L". Do a little more crocheting, oh, and of course, housework!

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Planned on staying home and starting the blocks for Dan's swap BUT we took a juick trip to a nearby community with a very old timey general store.
Absolutely adorable, with some stuff even older than than I remember. They have old timey candy, no longer a penny but still fun, sacks of grain and a lot of items that are hand made buy local people. Soap, embroidered towels, knit booties etc.
I loved it, but, now it's back to the sewing machine.

RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Well, my blocks are ready also!! I will mail on Monday as post office already closed today! I made 12 in my spare time. Hope you all enjoy! I am quite excited to see the ones I might get back! I will treasure them I am sure! I was going through some of my mother's items this last week and found the box of blocks that we made together from a block of the month club from our favorite quilt shop!! I was so thrilled! Mine were done in tans and blues and pinks but hers are done in beige's and greens! I am going to try and find time sometime to make the quilt out of ita! Brought back many memories of our times sewing together and going to quilt store, etc!
Hope everyone is having a great weekend! Hugs to all! Melinda

 o
RE: 'Spring garden' quilt squares????

Robin, wonderful to hear from you and so good to hear that your mom is improving.
I'll be watching for the mail lady to bring the blocks too.
Melinda, Your Mom was one great lady. She was my pal for the first year long swap I did. She was always so thoughtful and I always enjoyed her packages.
I'm sure the blocks and whatever you make with them will be a treasure for many years.
Here is the list of whose blocks have arrived
Melissa
Dan
Dee
Michelle
And, three more are "done" Linda, Robin, and Melinda.
We are moving right along and should be finishing up right on time.

 o
