6th Annual Seed Addicts Swap

6th Annual Seed Addicts Swap!

I have thought long and hard on if I have time to host again this year with my new job, but I couldn't live with the decision not to, and decided I had to try.

To help me out, please make sure to follow the rules carefully. Especially including a what was sent list so I don't have to write it on arrival - this helps not to send you back your own seeds. I will try to respond at least once a day to posts, (if you have my addy from previous years, feel free to use it if I fall behind on getting back to you.)

Here are the guidelines:

Any seeds go old/new, veggie, flower, shade, natives, etc.

Deadline for mailing to me will be February 17th, all seed packets need to be sent (postmarked) by this time.

I wanted to make it earlier so I could work on them on president's weekend, but that is too soon. If most of you get them to me sooner, though, maybe I can get sorting well underway by then.

Please include:

* Return postage -same or more than it took you to mail. I'll recycle the bubble mailer you send seeds in.

* Address Label

* Your Garden web name

*** Lists of what you sent and also wish list (These are VERY important to help me NOT send the same seeds back to you. Maybe you'll get a wish or two, too?) FYI-I will try to limit dislikes, but cannot promise. Ex-If I get 50 marigold packs, then the 30 people joining will have to get at least one.

*Newbies should send postage and write newbie on bubble envelope.

I will return seeds by March 1st or earlier (or as soon as all seeds are in.)

Note--This year I am adding a Maximum Limit of 30 trade pkts or less, the last few years a few huge sasbes (40-60 pkts) have been sent and I think it limits the variety to all swappers a little because of needing to fill those big envelopes.

You can send duplicates, (only 2 if they are very common.) You will receive the same amount of packets as you send in and any "Bonus" seeds . Anyone wanting to donate "Bonus" seeds please label them as "Bonus" or separate them and I will distribute them to other swappers and newbies.

FYI -I can only include bonuses if you have adequate return postage to allow it-you may want an extra stamp (ex-if it only took you the minimum to send, but you sent 22 extra-lightweight pkts) often seeds from others can weigh differently due to way they are packaged/size of seed, too.

Happy sowing,

Abbey

Yep, I am sorting, sorting, sorting. This is my first day off in two weeks. Evenings have been busy since the last one came in Thursday (I hope), especially since I had a big festival at work to prepare for yesterday too. Last year it took about 4-5 days to get them all out. They will be trickling out all week so start watching mailboxes about Tuesday.

It took digging three times through mailers to find Angela's, yep, it is yotetrapper. Yes on Mandy too. Patty's and Patricia's came in this week - I think that is it. 31 total.
My biggest worry is being able to check weights\postage without any days off when PO is open. If they look good, and I can not find a way to check in small town Iowa, I will just send and cross my fingers. If I am leary, I may hold a few to take to a scale. Last year I worked at a place with a postage scale and could check them...I'm sure most will not be of concern.

Keep an eye out later this week.
Lots of great stuff, I hope you'll love them.

Happy sowing, I'll likely be up till midnight tonight, lol.

Well, the last of them are finally done and going out, I never seem to anticipate how much time this takes every single night. With all my work hours working 6-7 days a week, It was so much harder finding time when my 5 year olds weren't destroying my sorting piles, etc. LOL. I'm just glad I was able to finish and get some nice wishes filled. There were a couple manic moments "Ayhhh, the PO pick up is approaching too fast and I do not have these envies topped off! Here are the last few" - without double checking lists, so I hope those moments you didn't get your own back. It was usually from the unusuals pile so I was crossing my fingers those few times.

I hope you enjoy them and have fun planting.

YAY ABBEY!! Thank you, thank you for all your hard work! As the mom of a 6-year-old myself, I can just imagine trying to sort that many seeds with my daughter disarranging my piles -- yikes! You are our hero!

I'll be watching my mailbox this week in anticipation -- thanks so much again!

I rec'd mine today. Thank yo so much for the seeds and all your hard work. Have any of you rec'd your enve's in swaps before open. My enve looks like the tape was ripped off. Abby, if you would, could you email me and let me know about how many you mailed me if you have any idea. I am sorry. I am not accusing you and hope you understand that. I really think that my mail person is b/c a couple weeks ago I rec'd an enve clearly marked seeds the way this one was, and it was open too. I don't want to accuse or be mad at the mail person unless I know for sure or reasonably sure, but this is twice now.

I do thank you Abby for all your hard work. I really appreciate it. And with all the above, I still rec'd some nice seeds. I appreciate it. Thanks soooo much.

I have read about ripped open packets on this thread and the surprise swap thread as well! I think maybe even on Fran's too... Must be something weird going on w/ the post offices?? I would def take it to the post office and complain, that is NOT right! If something is torn they are supposed to at least bag it and put an apology letter in it. I rec'd that once.. hmmm

Still peekin in the mailbox for mine..lol So happy to see people so excited over their seeds!! :)

    Hugs,

Thanks Wendy. I really think in my gut that my mail lady has been pilfering. ( I like that word). This is the second time it has happened and both were clearly labeled "Hand cancel, Seeds", Do Not Bend-Seeds." The ay it was put in my mailbox makes me wonder too. It was stood up with he end out when sh usually lays it as flat as will allow. No bag or anything about getting ripped open. It just upsets me that I can't trust her with my SEEDS> Who cares about paychecks, insurance/credit card stmts, etc. But not my seeds. You know??????? LOL

  • susantexoma

    Nichol/gardenmom2,

I'm so sorry that happened to you! It happened to me a couple of years ago too -- not with seeds, but with a GameBoy cartridge that I bought for my son on eBay. The envelope from the seller arrived empty, with a slit down the side -- someone in the postal system had taken it. I'm sure most postal employees are totally honest but it's a shame that there are a few dishonest ones -- and whoever did it is taking a big risk, isn't tampering with the mail a federal offense?

    I'm sorry about your seeds!!

    Susan

  • gardenmom2

Thanks Susan. That i it exactly. The enve was slit just up the side. I don't really care as far as valuable or anything, but its just that they did it.

    Thank you.

If I were you Nichol I'd be standing at your mailbox tomorrow waving that envy right at her as she pulls up! :P I'd straight out ask her and threaten to make a complaint..
*mutterin.. NOBODY's gonna mess with my SEEDS!!! lol :P
Got me all riled up now... LOL

Better than that, I work at the school just up the road and she comes in there. I will be speaking with her there about "my concern with the last couple envelopes I have rec'd and the fact that I may need to get a PO box at the Postal Service's Expense so that I can be sure I am getting ALL ofmy mail." I have to work tomorrow, but I am calling to complain in the morning. I will be nice, as I have no PROOF, but I will let it be known that this is the second time it has happened and I will do what it takes to be sure it does not happen again.

I think I was just shocked at first, ya know?? I never would have thought about it. It'sthe mail for pete's sake. If she is that hard up all she has to do is ask andI would help her nd her family out, but to steal, MY MAIL ?????? I guess it goes to show the state of the economy. I think I may start putting a note inside my enve's with the packet count and asking that othes maybe start doing the same that way we can all be sure we are getting them all. Write it on the inside of the enve that way it can't be removed, ya know???? Sad state of our economy and our country when you can't even mail a few packets of seeds without a security escort, KWIM ??????

Nichold - I can't believe that! OMG. I am lucky my mail lady is super nice and even walks the stuff up to my door. She is always commenting on the new stuff I am adding etc.

Wendy, it turned cold here today. It has been in the 70's but that is not right for here. We should nothave that warm of weather yet though. But now it makes the 40 degree weather seem REALLY REALLY cold. It is supposed o warm up to 60 again Fri and Sat. (fingers crossed).

    Nichol,
It had been beautiful and warm here too...out of season..BUT I took advantage of it and cleaned out all my beds. You just KNOW it's going to snow again before March is ended...we haven't gotten the "onion snow" yet!

  • sassybutterfly_2008

I know what you both mean.. it was very odd to be WS'ing in 75 degree weather! lol But I know it won't last.. just lotsa teasers here til May... :)

    ~Wendy

  • gardenmom2

That was a question I had Wendy. As a newby to WS'ing, I was not sure if it was too late to winter sow since we were warming up. I know it won't last, but I don't think it will be mid may, either, as we are warming up a lot quicker this year, it seems. So should I still keep WS'ing then???? How about something that needs a few weeks in cold like KMOGG??? Is it too late for that????

  • sassybutterfly_2008

I WS'ed last year up thru the first week of April. There's so many variations in temps that it will still work just wonderfully. Just keep an eye on them and the moisture level on the sprouted jugs. They'll be fine :) Can't really give any advice on the KMOTGG as I've never tried growing it.. I've heard it's super finicky tho. If it needs cold you might toss the seeds in the fridge for 1-2 wks and see if that'll do the trick. You oughta post a thread on the Ws'ing forum and just ask, I'm sure someone will have the answer!

I received mine yesterday! They were all great, but I was especially pleased to see the Soapwort. I had planted some Soapwort, and it sprouted, and then a squirrel or bird dug up all the sprouts. Now I can plant more this weekend. I want to try making soap with it - supposedly it makes a nice shampoo.
