new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

I should note first that this swap is for active members of Our Bloomin' Friends.

The theme for this month's swap is "Made in the Shade!" I think most of us are starting to see signs of life in our gardens, or will be soon, and things will soon need to be divided, so this is perfect timing for this swap. I'd like this to be a plant swap for shade or partial shade loving plants. Of course, you are welcome to include other things, such as seeds or something that reminds you of the theme, but the majority of the box should be plants or bulbs. I think that since it's early we can keep the boxes on the smaller side as well. Signups will end on April 8 and let's get boxes mailed out the week of April 18 so nothing is trapped in slow holiday mail the following week. Please send packages priority mail and get delivery confirmation. Games will begin after signups are over :)

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

I'm going to have to pass this month. :o( We've got so much going on that it just won't be possible! 3 of our kiddos have birthdays, we've got our bathroom torn apart trying to get that fixed, standardized testing for 3 boys (we homeschool, so the older ones have to be tested every year), the bug's broken down again, a 4 day trip, 7 dentist appts, 1 ortho appt, several church functions, plus Easter and getting ready for my girl's trip with my MIL. And that's around all the normal, every day stuff. WHEW, I'm tired just typing all that! LOL!
But I'll be ready to play next month, it'll be a welcome diversion! :D

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi Rose. I am signed up for two other swaps this month, and was thinking that my shade garden is still sleeping, as it should be with temps in the 20s at night. I'm tired of this February like weather. What ever happened to the notion of an early spring??? lol!

Anyway, I am going to sign up for this one too. You can never have too many shade-loving plants, lol! I did have a question about the shipping box size. I think a small flat rate will be too small and a medium flat rate might be too large, so I imagine we will do something in between that isn't a flat rate. What did you have in mind?

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Oh boo, not enough shade in my yard yet for a good shade swap so I am going to pass. Since we built on a soybean field four years ago, it will be a while, (years), before we have a lot of shade. Hope everyone has fun. Smitties

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Sue, there's a square priority box that's about 6x6x6 that is nice, and usually comes in under $8ish if there's not too much dirt to add weight. i'm actually a big fan of recycling the boxes amazon ships in-- they seem to be the perfect size for these swaps and i'm constantly snatching them from the pile of boxes at work. i think the medium flat rates are now about 12? i just don't think i have enough plants to fill a medium one LOL what do you guys who are playing think? we could do the "pick a small box or medium box and i'll assign accordingly" thing if you' like. i will also try to pay more attention to regions-- never occurred to me that the rates are different-- DUH!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

HI!
I think I'm gonna have to pass this month. I have almost no shade and everything is frozen to the ground anyway...
Have a great time! :)
vina

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

vina, i will gladly send you some of my shade in exchange for some of your sun LOL

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

I think the 6 x 6 x 6 box is a great size as well. Thanks.

Hope everyone is having better weather than we are here in NE Ohio. Got about an inch of snow yesterday, and more expected today. Have a great day everyone!

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Oh goody! I'm still on the active list, lol! Although, I haven't been active at all. Hello to my old blooming friends and many new ones I see. I'm still here, in the trenches so to speak, trying to keep up with the job and the boys. Seems I can only get around to GW when summer is on the horizon and school is almost out. Well, we have 9 weeks left but the countdown is on. I'm teaching third grade this year and the boys are as busy in their sports as ever. Well, actually, more so. So that's all I seem to do. We did just have spring break and I got out to my gardens. To my surprise, they haden't gotten away from me, but had filled in rather nicely. So that's about it for me. Nice to see the group is strong as ever. I'm hoping to join in closer to summer time.

Theresa

rose, i will be passing this month.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Uh oh, I'm listed in both the shade and the sun. Please take me out of the sun before I get a sunburn...lol. Anyway, I love the term "shady ladies". My son affectionately called me a "shady" mom during his teenage years. I didn't know what that meant at the time, but my husband translated for me. He said it means your mean or unfair. Well, that was some years ago, but I wouldn't have changed a thing. Seeing the term brings back fond memories. Take care ladies.

Sue N.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

sorry about that, sue, i was having problems with the word file. it added a line and kept duplicating and deleting things. aarrggh i thought i caught them all!

there was a song i learned at camp called shady ladies. seemed very risque when i was twelve. went something like "shady lady dressed in black, she makes her living on her back. she's a . . . car mechanic." i still remember the campfire during which the counselors taught us that song LOL

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

hello
I have not been in the plant swaps for over a year due to moving, and not been in a group since the Cracked Pots desolved. now I'm moved and have some plants I can trade and lots of plants I need.
How can I apply to be in this group?
I wont be able to swap every month but at least half I think.
thanks for considering me.
michelle

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Michelle, i am on the newer end myself, but i believe the rules are that you have to have traded with 2 members. the list of active member is actually posted on this thread. contact brittneysgran for more info; she is the one who gave me more info when i joined :) i think i remember that you have feedback from the easter basket swap-- have you traded with anyone on the list?

oh, and cracked pots-- love it!! great name

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

hello
thanks rose, I have traded with at least 4 people in the group maybe more.
I have some plants that would be good for this swap if I can join. I can send to my partner first if you want.
michelle

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Michelle, if you haven;t traded with any of us ask someone to do a quick trade with you, then agree to our simple rules, do at least 6 trades a year, send fair boxes. post when and what you receive. have fun and someone will send you a questionaire to fill out. hope to see you become one of us. I am the oldest oldie in this group so pretty sure this info is correct. hugs carol

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

thanks carol
I'll watch for a questionaire
michelle

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

carol, i'll vouch for michelle. she's been on gw for quite some time and i've been in several groups with her and have done trades with her.

michelle...welcome, nice to see ya.

theresa.....i was wondering where the heck you went. so tell me, whatever did you get from bluestone gardens...were you happy with your choices?

for a quick minute i watched that extreme couponing...what the heck does this woman need with 59 bottles of mustard. i think these people are extreme in more than their couponing. i sure hope the donate. whackos. how do you keep 100 boxes or bottles of things and use them all before they expire.

everyone do their taxes? i have to work on them this week, time is getting the better of me!!!

so nice to see the trees blooming and the early spring bulbs popping...the green is coming to live and i'm loving it.

be well everyone.
maryanne

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

extreme couponing? there is a tv show about coupon shopping? i admit i always liked those kind of articles in good housekeeping, but a whole tv show seems a bit much LOL 59 bottles of mustard? yikes. i love to bargain bulk shop but i agree-- there are extremes and 59 bottles of mustard pretty much says it all. sometimes i am really glad i don't have cable.

michelle, i see no need to send your end first. welcome to the group!

about questionnaires-- have we decided what to do about those? i know remy is in the height of her busy season and probably has no time to revamp and redistribute. i was wondering earlier as i was thinking out a response to michelle's request who our group elders or wise women were and who "processed" memberships. carol, as self defined oldest oldie, answered part of that for me LOL. i was also thinking that we need a secretary! when i was setting up the swap i thought it would be nice to have a standard description/explanation of group policies to display, so we wouldn't have to figure out how to explain it every time. anyway, i would be happy to volunteer to help if one or more of the older oldie wise women would tell me what needs to be done :)

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

hello
well as long as all members have updated trade pages, that should be all the info I need. all the basic rules I go by as a general rule.
all plant material carfully packed
plants always send priority
good fair trades
good size healthy plants
25 seeds min for seed packs
posting ship and receved
sending on time, or notify of delay
any other rules/regulations/guidlines please let me know.

I'm rilly looking forward to swaping plants again

michelle

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Michelle-Great that you have traded with 4 of the members here. I sent you a copy of the questionaire. LMK if you don't get it. Send it back to me when you complete and I will revise the last list we have adding you onto it.

I think a few other newbies have not filled one out so I will check and see who is missing and send a questionaire to them as well.

Rose-This group does need a Secretary..so you are volunteering?

Shirley

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

sure, Shirley, i'm volunteering. i like that kind of stuff :) so you, carol, and jeanne are the people i have in my head as the group wise women. give me a list of things you guys want me to tackle and i will be happy to serve :D

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

i'm still waiting to hear from a few people, so i'm going to wait to post partners. i'll extend the sending time. stay turned for new dates and partners :)

in the meantime, a small, un-googleable game to while away the time, kinda like "the price is right" :)

those of you who know me know that i have been bitten in a BADDDD way by both the daylily and wintersowing bugs!! your question is: how many containers of daylily crosses do you think i've planted?

the person to come closest to the total wins! i will accept answers until next friday 4/15 midnight (which means saturday when i wake up). post them here please! here's a hint, just to make it fair- it's under 300 ('cause i ran out of money LOL)

have fun!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

I can also vouch for Michelle micyrey!
Have traded with her numerous times over the years and also in group swaps - she's the greatest - Hi Michelle!

Sue G.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Okay with a questionaire coming Michelle you are in. rot if you wanna help get a copy of the questionaire from Shirley send it to everyone to complete, then send a copy to everyone of each one. oldies also include Earthly and Mellen and Annie don't know if I forgot anyone. also sending a copy of the rules to anyone who has completed a trade and wants to join the group is needed. I am still okay with answering newbies questions. thankyou for your offer of help rose. I think Squanzon is an oldie also as is Beth B. hugs to all carol

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

thanks sue, I got the questionair thet other day and sent it back to shirley.

as for my quess....182 DL crosses planted

I'm gonna raid MIL's yard for plants to swap, I moved as much as I could from the old yard and planted it there.

happy weekend ya'll
michelle

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

rose, thanks for doing that. i used to. all my stuff is on the old computer.

i take a vote we upgrade our questionnaires. it's been what, 4 or 5 years since we started? my stuff is ooooolllldddd.

raining today, all day, but there's just so much coming to life, that i can't complain. afterall, april showers bring those beautiful may flowers.

my guess rose is 227.

have a great weekend everyone, i'm going to attempt my taxes.

maryanne

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

okay, cool, i'll dig out my copy of the questionnaire, clean it up a bit, and send it out. we are moving the contents of a storage shed to our now house this weekend, but i should be able to get it done by monday. are there any questions anyone would like to add? i'll also draft up a copy of the rules as i know them and post them so we can see if i missed anything :) it's trades with 2 members, right?

any of you new members who recently filled out a questionnaire, if you saved your answers, could you please send them to me too, via mail? thanks!

keep those guesses coming :)

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Good morning all! Haven't been on much lately. Some of you may know that I have breast cancer and others don't. I am going to be doing a double mastectomy on the 21st of this month at Washingtion Regional in Fayetteville, AR. Got diagnosed on the 2nd of March and was going to have it done on the 17th, but got blood clots in my arm and couldn't. So That leaves me out of doing any of the swaps for several months or more yet. I so would love to do some of them, but sorry!
But would love to have any new updated questionnaires when they come out and one sent to me. I do plan on trading and joining in on the fun again in the future!! LOl!
Everyone have a great weekend!
My guess on the question is 201.
Hugs, Melinda

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hey everyone,
My guess for the daylily crosses is for 299.
Thanks,
Faye!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

I see partners have not been posted yet. If its not to late count me in.
Heidi

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

My guess for the daylily crosses is 172.

We were supposed to have warmer temps today, but it is fairly windy, so that doesn't help much. I took my four-year-old granddaughter on a metroparks farm wagon tour today, the first of the season. She absolutely loved it, as did I. Gonna try to clean up the flower beds a bit tomorrow.

Have a great day everyone. Can't wait for partners!

Sue N.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi Melinda -

I am keeping you in my prayers, stay strong. My mom went through what you are going through at the tender age of 31 and the cancer never returned, so I know there is always a good chance of being cancer free. I myself am a cancer survivor for almost three years without a trace of any problems. I thank God for my second chance and count each day as a blessing. God bless you.

Sue N.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

heidi, sure you can still join up! i'll be posting partners later tonight, so perfect timing :)

melinda, thinking about you and wishing you all the best. i will send you the questionnaire when it is revamped and please know we are all here if you need us :)

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Melinda, big hugs thoughts and prayers are with you, sure your mom will be holding your hand during this. we love you
your friend carol

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi Melinda....So sorry to hear your news about the cancer. I will have you added to my prayer list. God is so good and I know everything will go well. You will always be a part of this group and we will send you a new questionaire. Please let us know how it goes and post often with your progress. I will be praying for you on the 21st.

Rose I sent you an email and I will check on the bears breeches.

Myself and another Sunday School Teacher took the youth to the Georgia Aquarium today. I'm so glad we went because it was awesome. A friend of mine works there and took us behind the scenes and you would think the kids had won the lottery they were so excited. She swims with the sharks and told them all kinds of interesting stuff. The cutest thing of the day was the penguins. One of the boys in the group caught two sitting on a rock really close to the glass window. He started making hand motions to the left, to the right, up over his head, around in circles and they watched every move. It must have made one of the penguins dizzy because it started swaying and closed its eyes and wouldn't watch anymore. Sure wish we had got it on tape it was priceless.

Daylily crosses 218

Shirley

I hope you had nice weather for the move. It was 83 degrees here in NE Ohio today. Hard to believe that we had snow ten days ago!

 o

Woohooo, partners!! I can't wait to get moving on my package for Faye! I already have the address... I'll post when it's sent. :-)

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

That's ok I'm used to being out here on my own in the Wild West - LOL!

I think I told everyone a week ago Friday that the high was 100 degrees - well yesterday the high was 58 degrees. Such strange weather...oh well it will be back to 90 by the end of this week -- summer's around the corner. :(

Thanks for including me!

Sue G.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

wow sue, i think i would melt to death there. it was 85 today and that was nice because it's been so cold this spring, but once it creeps above 90 i wilt. you must get to grow amazing plants though!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

hello
I will email rose with my address unless you have it.

I will need heidi's, and will try to get her box ready to send no later than wed. I will go check her wants list and see what I have that will fit.

rose I do have a woodland garden started under a maple tree, so far I have my hostas there, some in pots, and I did put one columbine there but dont know if it made it. I dont need named plants but if they have names I try to keep them for other swaps, some of mine have lost there tags after moving.

my daffadills are all in bloom now, I planted out parsly and pansys and have a tray of perennial sweet peas doing great.

I have a question if any of you may know this.
I planted lots of diffrent hibiscus seeds this winter and most didnt state if they were hardy or not. is there some way to tell the hardy from tropical with out freezing them and seeing if they die?

I can't tell you how happy I am to be a part of a plant group again.

michelle

ps please feel free to look me up on facebook, I will be posting picks of my gardens as they grow and love seeing other peoples gardens. my profile pick is a buck eye butterfly just so you know witch one is me.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Dearest Melinda, Did not know about this until I read your post above. MANY people will be praying for you including me. Are you a DG member? If so, there is a section for prayers for members going through stuff just like you are. If you are there, you will be sooo uplifted by so many people. We love you,
ME

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Michelle, if the leaves on your hibiscus are shiny, they are not winter hardy. The ones with dull leaves were hardy in Zone7 , MD.
This may not work for zone 5 but it's a start.
Melinda, I will be thinking about you and sending prayers for an excellent outcome from the surgery. Keep posting when you can. You are special and are wished the very best.
BB

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Thanks everyone for such great support and prayers! I certainly will need them! But I am going to do fine. I still have a little over a week, trying to stay busy and get some things done.
I did get the questionnaire and will be sending back sometime tonight or tomorrow. I have to go to Fayetteville and do some more pre-op stuff! YUK!
Hugs to all and have a great day! Melinda

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

sue, your package was delivered today. the postperson can't get up my driveway, so they left it at my neighbor's house. as soon as the rain stops i will go retrieve it! i'm so excited :) these round robins and the generosity of spirit they represent really make it christmas all year 'round :)

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Rose, anybody ??? Help???
How do you get to print the postage for the regional boxes???
I can't find it on the computer, so I took them to the PO and the man there, very nicely, said he can't do it. It is NOT in his system!!!!!!
I could mail them by regular priority but it is over $20.00
the boxes are different shape and it is not going to fit into a med flat rate box. Grrrrr.
Ok, so bottom line is Emmylou, your package did NOT get mailed today. sorry, I'll get something done tomorrow.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

i braved the torrential downpours to get my package at mable's--- and wow it was worth it. sue, however did you cram so much into that box? LOL i already potted everyone up and they are in the greenhouse so i will try and remember the names-- sorry if i garble them. there were FOUR hostas, which is awesome since i don't have any and have wanted to try them-- lemon lime, illicit affair, color glory, and fragrant bouquet; a huge chunk of liriope muscari, also new to me; and 2 chunks of astilbe fanal, the red one, which i have been wanting :D and last but not least, a bunny money chocolate bar! sue you are a mind reader-- you sent me things i didn't even know i wanted but now i am so excited they are here! thank you so much for an awesome shady box :D

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Wow, Rose that package got there so quickly! I have been practicing my packaging skills so that I use every square inch of available space, given the rising postage rates, lol. I am so glad you liked the plants. I tried to send things that are easy to grow. Hostas are so beautiful in a shade garden, and there are so many varieties. I thought you might like the red fanal astible since you like bronze color foliage and red really stands out in the shade garden, and lastly liriope is a nice plant that spreads easily, and, you can't kill it. I am impressed that you have them planted up already. I have always wanted a greenhouse. It really extends the growing season I'm sure. Well, have a nice day.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Shirley, your box went in the mail this afternoon. It should get there Thursday! I did not do the delivery confirmation on this one - DH took it to the P.O. for me and didn't request one. It did mail priority mail tho. Let me know when you get it and I'll give you info on the plants!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

sue, this is our first year with the greenhouse. i have a lot of daylily seedlings in there right now. they came up faster than i thought and were a good first test. i am going to ws tomatoes this weekend. half will go outside in pop bottles, the other half will go in the greenhouse in bottles without tops (i don't think i am ever going to plant in a flowerpot again LOL!). we will see which is more effective. i'll also keep some of the tomatoes in containers and move them into the greenhouse in the fall. we aren't heating it, but we should be able to get a few more weeks of growing out of it, in theory LOL

my goal was to get my box out this week, but it rained and rained and rained some more, and now it's too cold and icky out to dig. i'm going to wait until monday to mail and hopefully things will dry out over the weekend.

keep those daylily cross guesses coming :)

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

You all are brave with the crazy weather. My son turned 5 today. I had to work, but made it home in time for dinner and cake. I hope to get my box out Monday. Treasa(uptreasa) I emailed you. I am wondering if you ever got it. My email likes to make things disappear into cyber space :o)
Heidi

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi Treasa, I sent you an email some time ago and wanted to make sure you received it. I know you probably already had my address, but I sent it along anyway to be on the safe side. I know you said you had trouble logging on here, so I thought I better be sure since I haven't seen any posts from you lately.

Have a good night everyone.

Thanks Michelle for a wonderful box!!

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hello All,

I wanted to pop in and say hi to those that remember me from previous swaps and also to the new members. Life has been crazy busy and I apologize that I have not posted in a long time. I see lots of new people have joined since the last time I posted. I would like to start participating again in some of the swaps if ya'll will have me back but may not be able to every month.

Melinda you are definitely in my thoughts and prayers. I will be thinking of you on the 21st and hope all will go well.

It is going to be a very spring like weekend here in Texas this weekend. I think I will do some work in my garden. Lots of things to clean up and weeds to pull. Not my favorite thing to do but gotta do it!

Hope everyone has a good rest of the week and happy swapping! :O)

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hello everyone! Couple nice boxes already sent!
Thanks everyone for the great prayers and kindness! They are greatly appreciated and needed.
Michelle-they won't say for positive on the chemo after surgery. I meet the criteria for it, but no one wants to comment. They did put me on a pill form of mild chemo already as couldn't have surgery when they wanted and Dr. said it had already been 3 weeks too long. (due to Blood clots). Oncologist said pretty sure, but have to wait until after surgery to say positively. Don't even know if in lymph nodes yet or not. It's just an aggressive, fast spreading type of cancer and already large. Grade 3.
Hope everyone is safe from all the storms last night. I was up many times due to the thunder, lightning and heavy rain.
Everyone have a great day! I am going to relax today and read, I think.
Hugs, Melinda

Anyone close on the guesses yet?

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Faye, the DC # for your package is: 0304 7990 0000 8153 4957.

Melinda, you're in our thoughts & prayers and wishing you the best on the 21st. Please keep us posted as you're able!

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Could someone please email me another copy of the questionaire? I remember getting one, but I think I deleted it before I could fill it out & send it back!
I am running on maybe 2 functioning brain cells lately. Sheesh. If you only knew how many times I've gone outside without checking to make sure I had my shirt buttoned up this week, I would probably be taken to the funny farm.
I found a carton of milk in the oven this morning. Seems I put it there last night, instead of back in the fridge! Fairly normal behavior for me, though, so my family's used to it.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

hazelnutbunny, i'll send it as soon as i finish this post :)

i've received some questionnaires but am still waiting on more. i'll start compiling them and list whose i have received this weekend. i am dog sitting tomorrow night, so there will be plenty of time to sit in front of the computer :) if you lost or did not get a questionnaire, plese email me directly and i will sent it out. sometimes my computer likes to eat emails that originate at gw, so i imagine others do as well. rosemctier @ aol.com.

no one has hit the nail on the head in the daylily cross guessing contest. if you haven't posted your answer, do it quickly--- deadline is before i wake up tomorrow :)

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

101 on the daylily crosses...

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

I'm guessing a conservative 39 on the daylily crosses.

I will complete the quesionnaire and send it to you this weekend Rose!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi Rose,

I will be sending the questionnaire along shortly. Thanks for the reminder.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

i have received questionnaires from the following people:

beth_b_kodiak
canyonwind
flowergirl34
hazelnutbunny
hdiperna
ilovefarac
hostarookie
Luckyladyd
Micyrey
suegardens2

if you sent one and you are not on the list, my email ate it. i am having trouble receiving some emails that originate at gw. i do not know why. you can email them directly to rosemctier @aol.com (remove space). thanks!

Daylily crosses guessing game winner is Suegardens2. she guessed 172. actual number: 158. congrats Sue!

now, on to un-googleable contest number 2. from those 158 daylily crosses, how many individual seedlings have sprouted? also known as: how many holes do i have to dig?
LOL for some crosses, i had only one seed; for others, there were over 40 seeds. the possibilities are endless!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

I'll guess 342 on the sprouted seeds! My back aches just thinking about digging that many holes! :D

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

OMGoodness, I can't believe I won! I guessed the first number that popped into my head, and thought it was way too high. What a nice surprise!

I'm not going to venture a guess on the sprouted ones, but I'm sure it must have been pretty high. Have a feeling that you'll be busy planting Rose.

I sent Treasa an email last week and she hasn't responded. Hope she's ok. Maybe she has just been busy. I am such a worrier by nature though.

Everyone have a wonderful day.

Sue N.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Congrats on your win Sue!!

Rose, I'm glad to hear your fur kiddo returned!!

My sprout guess is 302.

Faye, I hope everything is ok... I read a post on the MNF thread that they hadn't been able to reach you. Please let us know! :-)

Our weather hear isn't very nice this weekend! We had downpours all day yesterday... a lot of flooding going on. Today it's suppposed to be in the mid 60's but heavy winds and back to rain Mon - Wed. Hope everyone else is having 'decent' weather!

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi, everyone,
Sorry to worry anyone. I'm fine. Thanks. I did have trouble getting on a while back. Now, I've just been busy. Yesterday, we traveled 5 hours one way to buy a used sunroom. We're moving to a place I bought 4 years ago. It's a small house, with no room for my houseplants. The house we're currently in is only 980 square feet, so the living room is a jungle. People laugh if they can see through. No where to sit, no TV, just gardening books and plants! LOL We received a couple inches of snow last night. Lots of folks are unhappy about that.

While in Wisconsin picking up the sunroom, farmer's fields there are very soggy.

Melinda will be in my thoughts and prayers. I'm so sorry.

Another gal and I are taking over duties of being co farmer market managers in our town. There seems to be popular trend of farmer markets popping up everywhere in Michigan.

Have a great day, everyone!

I will guess 485. A lot of little and big towns around here have a farmer's market. I love going to them. There is one in Des Moines, the capitol, every Saturday from MAY through October. It is huge! Music, food, clothing, plants, garden produce, you name it, you can probably find it there. Real party atmosphere. I try to go at least twice during the season....once with hubby-he enjoys it, too--and again with either lady friends or family.

Been rainy and windy and much cooler here for the past few days. Not too far north of us got snow!

Melinda, thinking of you this week.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi Mavis - Don't shoot me but I received your box Thurs. I have been so BUSY I don't know if I am coming or going. We just got home from our camping trip. Thank you for the plants and I know there is an iris, hosta, a bulb, asiatic lily ?, and a couple of others, anyway you did say you would let me know what they are. Thanks and I will know where to plant them in sun or shade. You were right on target saying I would get the pkg Thurs.

Heidi - Happy belated B-Day to your son just turning 5. I have a grandson who is 6. He lives right beside us and it is priceless watching him grow-up.

Melissa - Milk in the oven? Too funny and I'm not admitting to all the crazy things I have done. I did tell DH we needed to hire someone to keep up with all the things we lose, he accuses me and I accuse him.

Sue - Congratulations...Good guess.

Treasa - I sell at our Farmers Market and love it. I get there early and check out all the goodies first.

Hi Dianne - So good to see your post. It is such a thrill to see a long time Member post. I miss our Traveling Daylily Group so much and sure wish I had the time to get it back together. I have seen several members on facebook but I don't have the time it takes to post that often over there.

Melinda - Hope your day went well....thinking of you.

Remy- Miss your posts and I know you are super busy with your seed shop.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi Everyone!

Hope you had a fun camping trip Shirley! I'm glad you received your box. It has a yellow or white iris, lily of the valley, hosta that gets kind of a blue tint, one bunch was pachysandra, the yellow asiatic lily and a caladium bulb. I hope you enjoy them!

Melinda, I'm thinking of you.

We are having a beautiful day today. It is 72 degrees and a little hazy. Probably means thunderstorms this afternoon.

Best wishes to anyone that the weather has been rough on. There have been an awful lot of tornados in VA and NC in the last couple of weeks.

Hope everyone has a great day where ever you are!

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi Treasa - I am so glad you are ok. You really have a sense of adventure traveling 5 hours one way like that. Sounds like something I would do. You really have been busy!

I know farmers in Ohio are complaining about all the rain. It seems the weather has been brutal all over. Hope all of our gardening friends are doing ok with all the tornadoes and high winds lately. Our power was out for five hours yesterday due to a downed tree. Many of them all over our area. We were very fortunate compared to VA, NC, etc.

Rose, I will venture a guess since you insist. The first number that comes to mind is 534, so that will be my guess.

I love the pictures of the dogs. I am gonna try to post one of mine below. It's a picture of my spoiled dog, and my spoiled husband lol! Hope it works!

Lots of nice packages being delivered. We have a great group! Have a wonderful evening everyone.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Carol did not get a questionaire, Son left me a doggie on his visit this time he is a long distance truck driver, he picked it up from my daughters stupid boy friends house in new mexico where he did not want the dog in the house and was gonna chain it in the back yard for the winter, its a lil mini snauzer don't know what she is mixed with, was gonna travel with her but she gets car sick , so dropped her off with mommy, could be worse, could be grand children they drop off, daughter has left big lab mix and turtle now I have sophie who I re-named Tisha, took her for shots today, spay date on tuesday, my jack is not really happy about sharing me. three dogs and a turtle now, hope to be in next swap hugs carol

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Sue-Your little dog is precious. I bet he is a little spoiled.

Mavis-Thanks for the info on the plants. We did have a wonderful camping trip. 16 of us went and we always have a good time. The traffic in Pigeon Forge was horrendous, they had the Rod Run there so we stayed clear of that part. We actually went to the Knoxville Zoo on Saturday and really enjoyed that.

I now have over 600 potted plants for my plant sale this Saturday. I will have to take pictures before I start digging on the irises. I do not dig them unless someone picks them out while they are blooming. The sad part is after it is all over my yard does not look the same. Most all the blooming irises are gone by the end of the day.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

awwww what a cute puppy! i want a lap dog so bad.

carol, i sent you another copy of the questionnaire. i'm sorry you didn't get the last one. and congrats on the new puppy! it isalways so wonderful to get a new pet.

heaven help me, i ordered some chicks today. no idea what i was thinking. i have wanted the buff polish for so long and they finally were available! i guess in the long run it doesn't matter if we have 14 chickens or 20. what's 6 more? and i just love their poofy goofy head feathers :)

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

hello
congrats on the chicks, hubby's birthday gift was a 15 pack of mystery chicks(he could not decide on just one kind)out of 15 we got 2 polish a blue with white head and a white with black splotches. he also got some cochen, and araucona and 4 we still cant identify yet.
I curently have 2 chicks in the bed room, an arucona got her foot stuck and was afraid it was broken and was bleeding alot, so set her and a friend up in a box an she is doing fine, may have broke a toe but the foot and leg are fine.

when it finaly stops RAINING I'm gonna build a nursry garden for all the new plants to go in till I deside where they go.

well time to get teh boys ready for school

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Thought I would drop in and say hello! Will be awhile for back on I am sure. I go in the morning and my sister is having her surgery and will stay with my son tomorrow night and then go in at 7:30 to have mine on Thursday. I am not scared, just dreading it. The long haul back out of it!
I really appreciate all the prayers, thoughts, and concern. My daughter will post something on Facebook after it's over, so if any of you check there you will see it.
Hope everyone is safe this evening! We are under severe thunderstorm warning and looks like gonna be a rough night for alot of people!
Hugs to all! See you in a few weeks, hopefully sooner!
Melinda

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Melinda, you are in my prayers. You are a strong lady, so hang in there. You are very brave. I am such a chicken when it comes to surgery, I am a big baby I admit.

Speaking of chickens, my hubby would love to raise a few. He used to live on a farm growing up and wants some rabbits, a goat, a horse, and some chickens. Of course we live in the middle of the city where none of that is allowed, and we only have 1/2 acre. One day, when we purchase our next place, we will look for more land. I envy all of you ladies that can raise animals, especially you Rose, they like you so much they come inside your house, like that crazy deer. Or that nutty goat that attacked you, lol!

Shirley, wow you have been busy, over six hundred plants, and I complain when I have to pot up fifty or so. I am so spoiled. I'm glad you had fun camping.

Emily, can't wait to see the picture of your dog. Anybody else have any pets? I'd love to see some pics.

Would you like to meet our Blue-Fronted Amazon Parrot? She is absolutely crazy about my DH, but she hates me. Crazy bird squacks everytime I go near her. I have given up on trying to make her my friend. I read up on them, and they are usually attached only to one person. I always say that I'm gonna make parrot stew, of course I wouldn't but she is so annoying, lol!

So here is our psycho bird, Carlita

Hope to see pics of your pets too, and your blooming flowers.

Goodnight everyone.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hello,
I received my box from hostarookie. I think it was last Friday. Thank you so much. The box was wonderful.
She sent me 2 hosta one color glory and the other one Diane Rememered, A Toad Lily, Siberian Iris Shakers Prayer and Dear Delight And she sent Gladiolus Bulbs, Blue Lagoon.
She was so thoughtful. She made out name labels for everything and included them. That was just great.
Again thanks you so much.
Faye!

Michelle, thanks for the tip. I will check with the city to verify.

Have a good night all.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

sue, did you take the pic of carlita? because it definitely looks like she's taking a defiant stand LOL oh, regarding chickens, you might consider getting a few bantam hens, although it might be difficult to find them sexed as chicks. they are small enough that you could keep them in a big cage inside. i had a little yellow banty whose name was miss pacman because she's twirl around in a circle and then zip around in all direction. she was so cute :)

em, your pup is adorable! i want a real little dog sooo bad. my little dog weighs over 50 lbs!

melinda, thinking of you. faye, you too!

hope everyone is well!

RE: newer new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

i forgot to post that i sent my package out. hopefully it will get there tomorrow!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi Rose -

No, I didn't take the picture of Carlita, she just looks like that all the time, it's like permanent PMS, lol! She actually lunges at me when I get near her, so I don't dare try to take any pics of her. She is really "psycho". My son rescued her from a family that said they had adopted her and that she had been abused. How could anyone hurt animals? I don't get it. She really freaks out if you wear gloves or if you come near her with brooms or sticks. My husband has to hold her and take her out of the room for me to clean her cage because she is so afraid. So anyway, my son gave her to us since he couldn't deal with her attitude either.

I googled the bantam hens, boy are they cute! I can now threaten Carlita, in addition to telling her I will make parrot stew out of her I can let her know that I can make parrot stew and use her very ample cage for the bantam hen that I will replace her with, lol!

I am going for a sleep study tonight since the doctor thinks I have sleep apnea. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Have a good night everyone.

Sue N.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Sue-Too funny about Carlita. She's very pretty though. I agree with you about abusing animals...I just can't do it.

Em - I hope you received your box today. I mailed it Tuesday.

Yoo Hoo I'm off tomorrow and have tons to do. Better get in the bed.

Maryanne I hope you are ok, haven't seen you post in awhile.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

hello
sue I had a pair of bannies in our basement at our old house, I kept them inside becouse we could not have a rooster at that house ( he was saposed to be a she) he would only crow when he heard us get up in the morning. they lived there for the whole winter, she layed eggs too.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

hope everyone has a safe and happy easter! it's supposed to rain here so i suppose i will cook dinner instead of garden LOL

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Michelle, I think I will get my DH a pair of bannies to have in the basement (at least in the colder months). I'll bet that will make his day! We have some sort of shed that was on the property that was filled with hay when we bought this house from the bank I'll bet that would make a nice home for them in the warmer months (if the city doesn't object!)

Shirley and Faye, nice to hear from you. Well, don't work too hard getting ready for Easter. Rose, I'm gonna cook instead of garden too. But, today if it's gonna rain, I'm going to wear my full-body rain suit and go do some weeding and move stuff around. It has rained all week and it's supposed to rain every day except Tuesday next week. I can't take it anymore, lol!

Have a good day everybody.

Sue N.

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

sue, they are so cute-- even the roos sound cute when they crow! i love the brahman and the japanese ones. we has a black japanese banty that happened to be in love with a hen who was a cornish cross of some sort-- HUGE hen, more like a turkeyin size. it was hilarious watching him try to "woo" her-- he was so tiny he couldn't do much of anything (not for lack of trying of course) except ride on her back ., sometimes i don't think she even knew he was there, just wandered around the coop with a tiny roo attached to her at all times.

sue, you have GOT to post a pic of you in this rainsuit!!! i do not have a rainsuit, but i'm one of those people who likes being in the rain. i don't even bother with an umbrella usually unless it is raining so hard i can't see out of my glasses. i do have a very ugly rainhat i love to torture my child with by wearing it in public, but sadly my ability to embarrass is decreasing-- i think she is getting numb to my weirdness LOL

michelle hope your box got there okay!

y'all are wayyyyyy off in your daylily seedling guesses, so i'm proposing a do-over! i'll keep teh contest running until the 30th, so get your new guesses in before then!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

I wanted to pop in and wish everyone a Happy Easter tomorrow. I just returned home from spending 3 weeks helping to take care of my triplet grandsons. Whew, that was a busy time! What cuties though! I will read through the postings some time soon and see what has been happening here.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

I received my box from Heidi. She sent a couple Centaurea plants, two Butter and Eggs plants, a Lupine, white yarrow, and what she said was a Tiger Lily. Heidi, you were misinformed about the name of that one. It looks like a daylily to me. Also, some plant labels. Thank you, Heidi. On Heidi's note was a great anonymous quote: Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% what you do with what happens to you.

Sue N. I haven't mailed your box yet. We had snow a couple times, which delayed any digging. I will wait now until next week, OK?

I have chickens, and we sell a few eggs at the farmer's market.

I'm working Easter Sunday. Last night I sang a solo for Good Friday service. Happy Easter, everyone!

My daylily sprout guess is 2999. LOL

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hello, Lovely Ladies-Somewhere in outer space there is a long message I was going to send. I wonder if that space it went to ever gets full! It has been some time since I have posted & I am delighted that I am still on the active list. Have had so many things going on since at least Thanksgiving (yes, it's been that long!). Seems life has a way of getting into my way of doing what I enjoy!

It is so nice seeing all the new members & older ones coming back to participate. I do hope I will be able to swap soon myself.

Melinda-Please know I am praying for you & will continue to do so, asking the Lord for a quick & complete healing for you.

Wishing each of you a wonderful blessed Easter. What a wonderful hope we have in Jesus! Blessings, Margaret

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hello everyone. Best wishes for a beautiful easter day.

Margaret, how wonderful to see you - have thought about you and glad to see you are back.

Melinda's daughter has posted that Melinda has come through the surgery well and is progressing in her recovery. The power of God and prayer is amazing, isn't it?

I would love to have chickens, but they don't allow them in my boro. One of these days though, since I have become a qualified chicken farmer in my head, i'm going to do it anyway. I'll avoid the rooster. Just a township over, they can have cows, goats, horses, whatever...so strange. Such beneficial little animals, I certainly don't see the harm.

My guess on your seedlings is 522.

My car died...funeral is next week. I have no clue what kind of vehicle to get - whether to lease or buy outright. I've driven a van for so many years, I have no clue what it would feel like to be behind the wheel of an actual car. Prices are outrageous, gas is unbelievably expensive and getting worse day after day. I don't even know where to start looking of what i want. Been a long time since i had a car payment. oh well, nothing i can do to avoid it.

Have a great Easter everyone.

Maryanne

Still praying for our Melinda.

My plant sale went great and now I am getting ready for our Garden Clubs plant sale this Saturday. I have so much on my plate I don't know if I am coming or going. Come Winter I always wish I was playing in the dirt so I guess

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Treasa, I know what you mean about the snow, we had some not too long ago, and after temps in the 70s a few days before. It's great that you sing at church, I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, lol. And how in the world do you find time to raise chickens and sell at the Farmer's Market on top of working? Don't worry about the box, whenever you get around to it is fine.

Maryellen, sorry to hear about your car. My van died about a month ago, had almost 200,000 miles on it. I now have a Honda Civic, it gets 30 MPG average, so it is a lot better on gas than my van was. Even though I didn't want a car payment, it gets to the point that you spend more than that on repairs and maintenance, etc. My husband is a retired mechanic of 35 years. He recommends Hondas or Toyotas for good gas mileage, dependability and longevity. My son works at a Ford dealership and has told me that the Ford Focus, which has great gas mileage, has transmission problems. I was going to get a Focus, but I decided on the Honda for it's good track record for reliability. I couldn't be happier, except it is a little hard to get used to a smaller vehicle when you're used to driving a van.

Shirley, thanks for posting the hosting list for the remainder of the year. They all look like they will be fun, and I look forward to hosting the Ice Cream Social in August. You're a busy lady too with all those sales. I know you'll do great. In the future I hope to be able to sell plants at our local flea market. I have never done so before, but before you know it I'll have daylilies and iris coming out of my ears, lol.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Melinda.

Nice boxes are going around, and they are all so different. Many plants for the shade that I haven't grown. It's nice to read all the posts.

Hope you all had a good Easter. I am off of work today and just had an allergy test this morning recommended by my ENT. Luckily, I am only moderately allergic to cats, molds and grasses and two kinds of trees. I am doing much better than when I was tested 30 plus years ago and my parents were going to put me in a glass bubble, lol!

Talk to you later.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

i know!!! i am going to be digging all the livelong day all summer long to get those seedlings in the ground. and what did i do today? bought 20 flipping more daylily seeds. i have a serious serious problem ladies LOL. i figure it's the dayily diet-- each dollar i spend on seeds is money i can't spend on chocolate!

 o
RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Sue-Yes the more you trade and buy the bigger your plant inventory gets.

I'll guess 808..Rose you addict you. LOL

We had terrible storms here last night. The tornados that devastated Alabama almost reached here. Two touched down in Mountain City Georgia which is 25 minutes from here. I'm so sorry for all the families that lost their life, loved ones & their homes. I have never had 911 call our home and tell you to find shelter. It was really scary. Lucky for us after we built our home we dug out a half basement so it really is in the ground. My Dear Dad dug all the dirt out and rolled it out in a wheel barrel.

Melinda - Thinking of you today.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Hi all hoping to sign up for may swap, my son the truck driver, picked up an 11 lb snoodle in new mexico, where my daughters boyfriend had plans to tie it out for the winter in the back yard, he has tried to keep her as a travel companion but even with pills she gets car sick, so guess who gets her. took her for all shots a chip and a spay, paid extra because she was with puppies, not my fault only had her 4 days, son says he has no idea when or how. many years ago we had a greatdane break out our front window and drag our lil snoodle out for sex, so since we have no idea who got this one the puppy size could have killed her, so all is for the best. I have a jack named tiyli, daughter left me a lab mix named kobe, son left sophie who is now tisha, grandson left a turtle named zippy, could be worse could be grandchildren any way here is a sedated tishaPhotobucket

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Veeja, Tisha is so cute, I just love her! I know she's in good hands with you since everyone has left their pets for you to care for, or "adopt" shall we say? My sister has the same heart for animals you do, and she always has four or five dogs at a time, some transitory and some permanent. I remember how she used to always walk up to dogs as a child when we were walking to school. Some so large and ferocious looking, I thought she'd be eaten by them, lol. Being four years her elder, my mother always entrusted my younger sister to my care. Anyway, to make a long story short, all the animals loved her and she would pet and talk to them. Now we have such fond memories of those "good times" we had in our childhood and I affectionately call her "Dr. DoLittle" everytime she takes in another stray.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

RE: new: obf april swap: made in the shade!

Wow, I can't believe it! That never happens, lol! I am going through gardening withdrawl too. Trying to garden during the rain is tough since everything is so muddy and it's hard on the basck moving things around. The updside is no transplant shock. Some of my plants really took off this year too. I have fulda glow sedum that really spread all over this year. Of course, it is supposed to since it is a groundcover, lol. Hope it gets a little warmer soon, feels like March out there.
