UPDATE: Tropical Sub-Tropical Surplus Swap

Frances Coffill

Welcome to the"SWAP" portion of the Tropical Sub-Tropical "SURPLUS" Swap

First a reminder of the basics:

Side trading is encouraged. Please feel free to wheel and deal, just don't neglect your partner!

I want everyone to have fun, unload some "SURPLUS" plants/divisions/roots/corms/bulbs/whatever and possibly pick up something cool in exchange!

Boxes/Packages containing LIVE PLANTS should be sent PRIORITY MAIL. (as discussed in the previous thread, a FLATRATE box is probably going to be the best choice (they are big too)

All packages need to arrive at their new homes by May 30th.(That means they should leave your house no later than the 27th, by Priority Mail)

Please post when you send and recieve. (because enquiring minds want to know)

Optional of course, but do consider leaving "APPROPRIATE" feedback in the Rate and Review.

It is your responsibility to ensure that LIVE/VIABLE plant/seeds/cuttings arrive at their new home and that they are what you say they are. If you need help please ask, I am sure someone will be happy to help.

Second: the lists for your drooling pleasure, browse, drool, dream but but do pay attention!!!! (this is very very important) I have included links to your exchange pages for your convenience.

You are going to want to know what is in these lists!

Oh Barb I am so happy they are growing for you! they were so pathetic here, crying for water..... lol (the weaklings I DIDN'T send you last year are growing like MAD) I keep telling them.... don't get used to it.... but they don't listen!!!

I planted "air Potatoes" today (I know they are invasive in Florida) but they are so cool looking I cannot wait to see them in my tropical potS! Chell sent them to me and they were growing in the bag when I opened it!!! the roots had grabbed on to the paper towel and wouldn't let go!

I'll come and cook for you Barb, after flowers food is my favorite thing, I don't really eat, just taste, i love to cook! (I don't deep fry much to my southern spouse' dismay)
    ha ha ha

I get the 'dirt' thing.... when Paul goes out he always asks me what he can bring me, I always say 'dirt' he always gives me this "look"

Everyone knows me here, I go outdoors in AUGUST!!! (practically unheard of) cruise the garden, deadheading an digging at dawn! (before it gets too hot) I compost, I grow worms, (silly northerner) I recycle (coffee grounds, cardboard, newsprint, citrus rinds, tea bags and other things) I only use "Miracle Grow" on annuals and veggies, yes I am positively certifiable!

oh well, I best run, try to work, I don't know why, but when it rains I cannot seem to get motivated to do anything!

Regina, good to hear your plants arrived safely. Really happy that I had plants you're interested in and could help add to your collections! I'd love to hear more about the pond floaters...

Frances, I started using those little plastic cups for transplanting my WS seedlings (my yard is full of them, LOL), but they're so handy I'll be using them in the GH too from now on.....they are just the right size aren't they!?! Bigger than six pack cells, but not too big! I got most of mine from Dollar General (3.5oz), but Family Dollar and Walmart has some too (5 oz).
I just poke the holes thru a whole stack at a time before planting. They work well in my hydroponics too!

Better run, we're building the GH and the sawblade quit cuttting, so I was on 'break' while Tim went to get a new one...he just walked in so...

    Talk to y'all later.

Barb glad you found a local garden buddy. It's so much fun when you have a friend that likes to go to plant shows and swaps with you.

I had priced pond floaters in catalogs and on-line. After getting over the sticker shock, I looked into making my own. I found two methods. Since I am frugal and like easy I went with this method. You will need plastic mesh baskets, pool noodles, and cable ties. All can be bought from the dollar store. F R U G A L E ! ! ! Cut the pool noodles to the length of the basket sides with large shears and attach it to the basket with the cable ties. It is now ready to float. Either add plants that are potted or line the baskets with screen add your aquatic potting medium and plants and float it. If you don't want it floating all over the pond use fishing line and secure it to the side or a stone on the bottom. I would include pictures but for some reason this new provider and photo bucket will not let me post more than one picture at a time

OK....it was easier to post the link to my photobucket above than individual pictures. This new provider and photobucket are not getting along. The newest pictures of the pond and the pond floaters are all on the first page. If you look closely you will see that the water lily, canna, and blue iris are blooming. Also there are pictures of a new area of several of my Hoya's all grouped and hanging together. I just did that today. H.mini bella is in full bloom with umbells all around it....smells heavenly.

My neighbor gave me this rose last year for Mother's Day, it was a tiny thing, not even a foot tall, the flowers seemed to big for the plant. This morning there are at least 15 3-4 inch blooms!

    Barb
Mulch!!!! your Al is a real 'keeper' (ha ha ha) Mulch is just as good as dirt!!! (sometimes its way better than dirt!)

Pretty flowers! I love ice follies daffodil dnd the doubles too!!! I bought 100 giant daffies from Brecks last year with the coupon they came to about .25 each! They started blooming in early february and the last few have just finished, worth every penny!!! I will probably do it again this year!

    Happy Mothers Day everyone!!!

Tina looks like you received a really nice box filled with lots of goodies too....Whoo-Hoo.

Thanks for the compliments on the pond, Lots of hard work went into it. But the rewards I now get from it have been worth it. I so enjoy go out each day and feeding the fish(mosquito fish) and tending the plants. All but two or three where given or traded to me by fellow GWebber's, how kewl is that?

Florida definitely needs rain, we are in the red zone (fire). Alligator alley (I-75)has been closed off and on now almost 2 weeks now because of a brush fire. This is in the far south stretch that goes to the keys. We go thru these dry spells every year waiting for the rainy season to kick in. We are fortunite however in that we don't suffer like those in California. Those poor people are losing their homes there.

Well time to go do the grocery shopping......weeeeee....NOT!

    Hi y'all,

we had cool weather today (sure was muggy last couple of days though!).

    I hope everyone had a wonderfull Mother's Day, I know I did...
...We managed to get the GH built!...well, the framework at least (and just in time...on Mother's Day!!!). The windows are even installed...it still lacks siding on and the door, then it will be finished, but I can do that myself if necessary! Its 8x10, but it looks huge in our little yard! My BIL is even gonna give me a gutter for the front so I can collect rain water.

BigMama, I mailed your box today. Conf# 0308 1400 0001 3519 6564. It should reach you by Wed or Thurs.

Frances, we recieved our box from you today. Josh was so thrilled to get the caladiums and irises! Thanks for trading with us!

    Barb,
I think you're right, I think that I had already put the cuttings in the propagation box before I took this picture. That's usually the first thing I do when I open a box. I don't know how you can tell by all those plants in the pic! :-) Funny about the blue packing material because I reused it for the box I packed for Heather too. We are a smart frugal bunch aren't we!! LOL!

Chell, you'll have to post pictures of your greenhouse when it's done! How exciting!!

Heather, glad to hear you received your box. I hope that everything arrived in good health and does well for you. Enjoy!

    Have a great day everyone.

Hi Michelle! I will be watchiing for it! can hardly wait (I know I will love what ever you send) That is a lot of Tomatoes! I started about 20 OP varieties. I am only allowed 4 plants! *5 if you include the dwarf cherry tom I have in a pot! We haven't planted our garden yet because of the rain, but the plants are ready as soon as the muck dries up a bit! (okra, beans, squash, cukes and tomatoes) its a struggle to find enough sunshine for even a few plants around hre!

Regina I hope you are getting some rain soon, we seem to be getting a break!

I hope everyone is getting some nice late spring weather!

    Barb,
Making a propagation box is the easiest thing. All I did was take a plastic storage box and then put a mixture of perlite and peat in the bottom a couple inches deep. Then I wet the mixture, dip the cuttings in rooting hormone, stick them in there and put the lid on. Couldn't be any easier, took about 5 minutes to "make". :-) Now I have a bunch of them. Some plants root with in days. I even have begonias growing in there from the seeds of the plants that I rooted last fall!!

Amy that is neat! :) I am gonna do that too...I was thinking of the one also that has water in it with a air bubbler..You use hair rollers to put the cuttings in the top of the lid.... Token had one too over on the ws forum...Man Amy that is a lot of cuttings..Lol You are gonna be busy...:)))) Barb off to the big city to see what coleus I can find.......ps amy one of my adeniums I started from seed this winter is starting to branch...Man is it cute...:))) I am so happy...My jatropha belly plant is kind of a slow grower...The jatropha multifida is just now sarting to take off so yours should too...:))) Hey I finished my thoughts this time..Lol

Water in it with an air bubbler and hair rollers??? Ok, I can't picture that at all. Ha, ha, I guess I took the easy road! ;-) Oh and don't worry, I took those pictures last fall. I have just started doing major propagation this spring so I only have two boxes full right now. Man, this plant stuff is so much FUN! Now if I could only convince my hubby that I need a GH.

Can't wait for the weekend!!! School for this semester is done tomorrow (finally!!) and my winter sowed veggies are looking ready to plant. The veggie garden is ready, now all I need is the weekend to get here...hurry up!!! :-)

Speaking of generosity! I got a lovely package from Michelle today! LOADED with COLEUS, ruffly, fringy, colorful yumminess!!!! (now someone please tell me what to do with them!?!?!?) Straight into soil, or start in water? They are gorgeous and there are at least 8 different types!!! She also sent 2 clumps of grass, variagaed and green. A minirose pink and white flower (I could not believe that it was blooming in the box!!) and some stone crop (also variagated yum!!!) Last but certainly not least some surprise lily bulbs which I plan to share with my MIL (she has really been wanting some)

Michelle did you make the card? it is very pretty and crafty I love it! will try to post a photo of everything later!

Amy I love your propigation boxes!!! I have to do that next year!, I have been making little chambers for individual plants out of clear disposable glasses. this looks much tidier!!

Barb and Michelle you have me craving salsa! I best go make some out of the last of 2008 tomatoe crop! I put mine in the freezer, saving my canning for salsa and peaches (my fave food) It will soon be Peach season!!!! Yippeee!

Did you know mockingbirds have eyelashes??? I swear I see eyelashes on these birds. And they are not batting them at me either when they are diving at my head!

Here are some pictures of things in blooms and the mockingbirds.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Barb! look at all of those flowers! Those violets are pretty but they are a real pest here! spread like wiregrass! You really make me miss tulips too! (I knew winter was good for something!) Is that a trillium at the top! I can't remember the last time I saw a trillium!I am sorry to hear that Al has pain, I have suffered from hip/joint pain for several years, the doctors have told me the best treatment is 'keep moving' grrrr, sometimes it is very tough to do.

Regina I am happy that you are getting some rain! (I hate to complain about water from the sky but it is still raining off and on here! The plants are loving it, but it sure makes it unpleasant outside (muggy, mosquitos and soggy) That Brug is beautiful! I can't wait till mine bloom, I have 3 potted and one in the ground, I just love those leaves! Even if they didn't have flowers

My elephant ears hit the ground running too, all this water really perked them up. I cannot believe the size of the leaf on one of them (Is it my imagination or are those leafs still growing?!?!)
Here is a photo of some of the plants Michelle sent (see the little rose that bloomed in the box!!! 9 different coleus cuttings!!! can't wait to pot those up! they are gorgeous!

Michelle I am sorry to hear about your little GH! Glad that is was not worse and that you and your family are fine!
